Earlier this week, we delivered an article looking at the odds for the Indianapolis 500, knowing full well that things would change once the qualifying runs were out of the way. Drivers who were seen as potential favorites slipped in the odds after those qualifying runs, while a clear favorite emerged. While starting position is incredibly important, we are all well aware that it usually has little bearing on how the race plays out. There is always a chance that someone comes from the middle or back of the pack to take the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” so all we can do at this point is look at the updated IndyCar odds and talk about the impact it might have on each driver, so let’s get to it.

Alex Palou
Betting Pick: +550
If the qualifying runs are anything to go by, then you need to say that Palou is very much on the radar for those of us looking to pick a race winner. He looked very sharp indeed and will start the 2023 Indianapolis 500 in the pole position. This, though, is a bit of a cautionary tale, as only 21 drivers have won from the pole position in 106 attempts. The odds may not be in the favor of Palou in that regard, but he is coming off a win in Indianapolis, albeit on a different track setup. He also had a 2nd place finish in this race in his 2021 championship winning year. He definitely needs to be given a long hard look.

Pato O’Ward
Betting Pick: +650
O’Ward will be starting the Indianapolis 500 from the #5 slot, so definitely close enough to the front to be up amongst it from the start. This is a race that has been good to O’Ward, and while he has yet to win it, he was 2nd last year and 4th the year prior. He is on an upward trajectory that might well have many bettors deciding that this is his year. He is still looking for his first win of the season, but he has 3 2nd place finishes in the first 5 races, so it does feel like he is due for a win.

Scott Dixon
Betting Pick: +850
The man who has been the best driver in IndyCar over the past decade or so will start in the #6 slot as he looks to win the Indianapolis 500 for the 2nd time in his career. That win came way back in 2008, and while he has been close a couple of times since, his last 2 runs in this race have been pretty much forgettable. There are some who would suggest that Dixon’s best days are in the rearview mirror, but would you put it past this legend to deliver one more winning run in this iconic race?

Takuma Sato
Betting Pick: +1000
While some drivers in this race have not been relevant in terms of competing for a championship in recent years, there are a couple who seem to save their best for the Indianapolis 500. Helio Castroneves is one of those drivers, and Sato is another. Sato has raced just once this season, amassing just 5 points, but before you dismiss him, we need to remind you all that he has won this race twice since 2017 and finished on the podium in another. Might be worth taking as a top 5 pick.
