IndyCar BITNILE.COM Grand Prix: Palou Leads the Standings – Top 4 Picks for Portland Race

With just 4 races to come in the IndyCar season, it really is Alex Palou’s title to lose at this point.

We will get more into that when we start to break down the potential favorites for this weekend, but the reality is that time is running out for the drivers still in with a shot at running down the current leader.

Today’s MyBookie BITNILE.COM Grand Prix of Portland Top Favorites
1. Àlex Palou | 443 points
2. Colton Herta | 384 points
3. Scott Dixon | 378 points
4. Will Power | 377 points

My BITNILE.COM Grand Prix of Portland Analysis

While the lead is sizeable, it is still not impossible for one of the chasing pack to run down the leader, but for a driver to do it, they are going to need to get hot very quickly.

The first chance to do that comes this Saturday in Oregon with the running of the BITNILE.COM Grand Prix of Portland.

Who will come out on top? Let’s take a look at some of the potential winners.

Àlex Palou

With 2 championship wins in the last 3 seasons, Palou has quickly become the man to beat in IndyCar.

Rather than resting on his laurels, he has improved his game this season and is very much on the brink of winning it all once again.

With 4 races to come, Palou is sitting on 443 points, which has him 59 points up on his closest rival.

That said, he has now gone 5 races without a win and is perhaps a little fortunate that the wins have been spread out across several drivers instead of one getting hot and closing the gap.

In the years that he won the championship, Palou won in Portland, so let’s take him to win again here.

Colton Herta

While he may have left his challenge a little too, late, Herta is on the move and is now sitting in 2nd. He comes into this one having finished in the top 5 in each of the last 3 races, with one win in there for good measure.

He could make things very interesting if he can win again this weekend, but this is not a race that has been particularly kind to him.

His best finish in this race is 6th, but I would be willing to play him to finish in the top 5 given his current form.

Scott Dixon

Last season, Dixon went on a tear at this stage of the season, winning 3 of the last 4 races to finish 2nd overall in the driver standings.

He is going to need a finish similar to that if he is to run down Palou and take his 7th World Championship crown.

Dixon has, over the course of his career, been a proven winner, so it is not outside the realm of possibility that he makes a late run at the top spot.

He has finished 3rd in each of his last 3 runs in Portland, so another top 3 finish seems like a good bet.

Will Power

With a win in Iowa a few races back, it looked as though Power might be the one to make a late charge.

That has not panned out as expected, though, as he has now failed to crack the top 10 in each of the last 2 races.

He now very much looks like a long shot to go on and win it all, but perhaps he can turn things around in Portland.

He did have a 2nd place finish on this course a couple of seasons ago, so perhaps a top 3 wager is not out of the question.

2023 BITNILE.COM

There are few things as exciting as a championship race that goes all the way down to the wire. Just a couple of short weeks ago, it didn’t look as though we were going to that in IndyCar, but things have changed rather dramatically in that regard. That said, it could potentially be all over this weekend depending on the outcome of the Grand Prix of Portland, but there is also the possibility that we will not know who the 2023 IndyCar champion is before the end of the final race of the season. There are just 2 races to come in what is turning into a great battle, and it all begins this Sunday in Portland. Who will win this race, and will we see that battle go down to the final race of the season? Let’s take a look at the major players to consider in your IndyCar betting odds.

Alex Palou

As we mentioned at the top of this piece, the championship race looked to be done and dusted a couple of weeks ago, with Palou sitting on top of the driver standings with what appeared to be an unassailable lead. Perhaps Palou got a little too comfortable, or perhaps he began to feel the pressure, but after a streak that saw him win 3 straight races, he has now failed to win in the last 6, opening the door for the chasing pack. In fact, he hasn’t even cracked the top 5 in the last 3 races, finishing 7th in each of those. Palou won in Portland when he won the championship in 2021, so could we see history repeat here?

Scott Dixon

We should all know better by now that it is never a good idea to count Dixon out of any race, including the race for the IndyCar championship. Arguably one of the best drivers to ever race in this sport, Dixon is turning up the heat on Palou after winning each of the last 2 races. He still has work to do to complete the improbable comeback, but you can’t say that he isn’t making things very exciting indeed. Dixon probably needs a win in Portland this weekend, and since he finished 3rd in each of his last 2 runs there, it is certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

Josef Newgarden

A few weeks ago, Newgarden was the man we were looking at as the most likely contender to Palou, but he is now going to need to settle for the lesser spoils. He won a doubleheader in Iowa, but then followed that up with a trio of disappointing runs that essentially took him out of championship contention. He will still be looking to play the role of spoiler, though, but he will need to do a whole lot better than he did in his last couple of Portland races to make that happen.

Pato O’Ward

While the goal of every driver on the IndyCar circuit is to win the championship, we also cannot forget that there is a lot of prize money up for grabs in each race. What that means is that while the championship is now out of sight for most, there is still a lot of money up for grabs in the final 2 races of the season. O’Ward will be looking for his share, and even though he has yet to win a race in 2023, he did have a solid run in Portland last year and needs to be considered as a viable betting option.
