While it can be fun to watch a team or a single athlete dominate a sport, the reality is that most sports fans like to see a great battle for the championship. In the world of motor sports, the best championship races are very often found in IndyCar. Yes, we are still early in the 2023 season, but we are already seeing a fantastic battle for the top spot. The top 4 drivers are currently separated by just 11 points, while there are a couple of drivers just outside the top 4 who could easily propel themselves into the fray with a win. They will get the opportunity to do that this weekend in Indianapolis at the GMR Grand Prix, which is the final race before the Indianapolis 500. Let’s take a look the IndyCar betting analysis for the current top 4 and how they might do this weekend.

Where: Indianapolis Motor Speedway
TV / Streaming: NBC, Peacock
Marcus Ericsson
Speaking of the Indianapolis 500, Ericsson made his mark on IndyCar last season by winning the 2022 version of the big race. It was, in truth, the last great moment he had last season, as he tailed off in the second half of the season and slipped all the way down to 6th by the time the season was over. He is back on top this season, though, winning the opening race of the year and picking up a podium finish in the 3 races that followed that one. He had a decent run in this race last year, finishing 4th overall.

Pato O’Ward
After a big 2021 season where he finished 3rd overall, last year proved to be a bit of a backward step, with O’Ward finishing 7th in the final standings. Even with that, he still managed to win a couple of races along the way. He is still looking for his first win of the 2023 season, but he has been on the podium twice already with a couple of 2nd place finishes, so it does feel as though he is going to nab a win sooner rather than later. This race, though, has not been particularly kind to him, so I would proceed with caution here.

Alex Palou
In just his 2nd season with IndyCar, Palou stunned everyone by ending the season as the world champion. He had a tough time living up to the bar he set in 2021, though, as he had just 1 win, which came in the final race of the season last year. That helped move him up a little in the final standings, but he will almost certainly have been disappointed with his 5th place overall finish. He has been no worse than 8th in the 4 races to this point in the season, so not a bad start. His best run in this race was 3rd in his championship winning season.

Scott McLaughlin
Last year proved to be a breakout season for McLaughlin in just his 2nd full year with IndyCar. He started the season with a win and picked up 2 more on his way to a 4th place overall finish. He made a bit of a slow start to this season, but he made a big move in the last race, taking the checkered flag in Alabama. He has not been at his best on previous runs in this race, but with the recent win, maybe we can expect better on Sunday.
