After a long season in the WRC, it all comes to an end this weekend, but how it all plays out is anyone’s guess.
As a fan, all you want to see is a championship battle that goes all the way down to the wire, which is exactly what we are getting this weekend.

Analysis of the Rally in Japan
There are just 7 points separating the top 2 drivers in the WRC standings, so you have to wonder if things will stay the same, or will we see the #2 driver leapfrog himself into the #1 spot and the World Championship?
It’s about as exciting a finish to the season as we could all have hoped for, so let’s look at Rally Japan to see if we can figure out which driver will ultimately come out on top.
^Thierry Neuville
Despite picking up just 2 wins this season, Neuville has been at the top of the standings for a long portion of the season. Whether he stays there remains to be seen, but he is in control of his own destiny this weekend.
In fact, he may not necessarily need to win in order to win his first World Championship but taking that checkered flag would remove any shadow of doubt. His form suggests that he could do it, given that he has been no worse than 4th over the last 4 races, landing on the podium 3 times in that stretch. He did not have a great run in this race last season, but he did win in Japan in 2022.
^Ott Tänak
Unlike Neuville, who is seeking his first championship. Tanak has been in this position before, winning his lone World Championship back in 2019. While he has been chasing the leader for the majority of the season, Tanak has slowly been chipping away at the lead, with his win in the Central European Rally in the previous race giving him a real shot at completing the comeback and winning his 2nd title.
He has not won in Japan, but over the last couple of seasons, he has finished 2nd and 6th, respectively. He might not need the win here, but it will all depend on where Neuville finishes if he cannot take the checkered flag this weekend.
^Elfyn Evans
Mathematics is not on his side, but there is a chance that Evans could come from off the pace to win the World Championship, but that would likely mean that he would need to win and hope that both Neuville and Tanak fail to finish and pick up any points. It’s definitely a possible scenario, but it’s just not one that seems particularly likely to happen. As of now, Evans is 25 points off the lead and 18 points back of Tanak.
He has finished 2nd in each of his last 2 races, plus Evans won in Japan last season, so he could still be a factor in how all of this plays out. In short, if he wins this weekend in Japan, he could inadvertently hand the championship to one of the two drivers sitting ahead of him.

2022 WRC Rally Japan
The WRC season is coming to a close this weekend, with the final rally of the season set to take place in Japan. The race actually began in the early hours of Friday morning, but the first round was cut short as drivers struggled with what is a very tricky course. Friday ended with Thierry Neuville and Elfyn Evans in a tie, with Dani Sordo seeing his rally come to an end after crashing and having his vehicle go up in flames. The driver walked away from it all, which is always the best possible news in those situations. It was that crash that led to the early cancellation of the first loop, as well as the test that was scheduled for later in the day. It’s still all to play for, though, so expect a fun weekend. Here are a few drivers we can expect to be in the hunt to win it so you can bet against their WRC Odds.
2022 FORUM8 Rally Japan Analysis and Preview | WRC Betting Picks
Thierry Neuville
Neuville has very much been the nearly man in his time in the WRC, frequently landing in the top 3 in the overall standings. It looks to be more of the same this season, but you can bet that he would love to finish the season on a high in Japan. He does have 1 win on the season, with that one coming in Greece a couple of races ago. As we mentioned earlier this new track in Japan was expected to be tricky, but Neuville has handled it well to this point, so there is reason to believe that he could push on and get the win.
Elfyn Evans
After back-to-back 2nd place finishes in the WRC, Evans has taken a bit of a backward step this season, as he is currently sitting in 4th overall. Still, he is looking to finish the season strong and being tied for the lead in Japan after the opening day of racing means that he is absolutely in the hunt to win this rally. Whether he can push on and get that win remains to be seen, as he is still looking for his first win of the season, He has been in 2nd place 4 times this season, so he should stick around.
Kalle Rovanpera
There is absolutely zero pressure on Rovanpera in the Japan Rally, as he has already clinched the World Championship in convincing fashion. Rovanpera has been nothing short of brilliant this season, winning 6 races already and racking up a ridiculous number of points in the process. There is nothing left to prove, but you can bet that he will want to flaunt his total dominance in the final race of the season.
Ott Tanak
It has been another solid season for Tanak, who last won the World Championship back in 2019, as he currently sits in 2nd in the overall driver standings. He has probably done enough to secure that spot, but picking up a win in Japan would absolutely guarantee it. He has already won 3 races this season and has been no worse than 4th in each of his last 6 races. This is a driver that simply cannot ever be counted out.
