Ryder Cup Format
The format will consist of three days of competition with 28 events, all worth one point each. With 28 points available, 14.5 points are required to win the Ryder Cup, but only 14 points would be required for the United States to defend the title. If a match is tied after 18 holes, the match is halved (0.5 points to each team) with no extra holes being played.
Friday’s opening round features four foursomes playing alternate shot followed by four fourball (better ball) contests. On Saturday, there are four foursome matches, along with four fourball matches in the afternoon. Sunday’s finale concludes with 12 individual singles matches and offers the most points up for grabs.
Ryder Cup History
The Ryder Cup began in 1927 with the United States and Great Britain facing off at Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts. The US won the inaugural event, 9.5 to 2.5, behind the leadership of Walter Hagen.
Since the first event, the United States has owned the series with a 27-14-2 record. However, Team Europe has claimed nine of the last 13 events and won six straight on European soil.
The United States took care of business in 2021 when the Cup was played at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin. Team America thumped the Europeans with a 19-9 score, their largest margin of victory since 1975.
A Look at Team USA
The makeup of the United States team consists of six players who automatically qualify for the team, along with six captain’s picks. This year, the team is captained by 12-time PGA Tour winner and 2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson.
The six automatic qualifiers are Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa, and Xander Schauffele. Joining the automatic qualifiers are Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, Sam Burns, Rickie Fowler, and Justin Thomas.
Clark, Harman, Burns, and Homa will play in their first Ryder Cup event, while the remaining eight players own a 34-22-13 record in past Cups.

A Look at Team Europe
Qualifications for the European team changed heading into this year’s event, with the captain’s pick jumping from three to six. Criteria is similar to The USA, with six players securing a spot based on their performance and ranking on European and World points lists.
So far, just four players are a lock for the team. Those individuals are Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, and Tyrrell Hatton. Robert MacIntrye and Tommy Fleetwood are locks for the team, and you can expect Matt Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry, and Justin Rose to qualify as well.
Other potential players are Sepp Straka, Yannik Paul, Adrian Meronk, and Ludvig Aberg.

In a surprise, the United States are the early favorite, with the event less than a month out. Currently, Team USA is -140, while the Europeans are the underdog at +139. The chances of a draw fall at +1200.
Recent trends suggest a European victory but don’t be surprised if the United States heads to Italy and steals one from the Europeans with the roster they’ve assembled and their positive record in past Cups.
