Betting the Wimbledon

Wimbledon, the third grand slam of the 2024 tennis season, kicked off on Monday with some exciting matches and a few notable upsets.

Top two seeds Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are through to the second round, while Novak Djokovic, a 24-time grand slam winner coming off of a torn right meniscus, begins his march to an eighth Wimbledon title on Tuesday.

Let’s take a look at the last minute betting odds and preview some upcoming second-round matches.

Wimbledon Monday Recap

In addition to Sinner and Alcaraz advancing, there were a couple notable upsets on Monday.

Most notably, 18th seed Sebastian Baez lost in straight sets 2-6, 3-6, 4-6 to unseeded American Brandon Nakashima.

Nineteenth seed Nicolas Jarry, who has been having somewhat of a breakout season, also lost in the first round to Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

Adrian Mannarino and Mariano Navone are the only other two top-32 players out of contention already.

Qualifier Lloyd Harris beat Alex Michelsen in a five-set thriller, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (9), in what was the most exciting back-and-forth match on Monday.

Ugo Humbert also advanced via five-set victory, beating Alexander Shevchenko, while Frances Tiafoe and Aleksander Vukic each needed five sets to beat Matteo Arnaldi and Sebastian Ofner, respectively.

Wimbledon Second Round Previews

Denis Shapovalov vs. Daniel Altmaier

Shapovalov and Daniel Altmaier meet for the first time in their respective careers in the second round at the All England Club with the winner advancing to play either Harris or American Ben Shelton.

Shapovalov, a former top-10 ranked player, is just 13-16 this season but used a protected ranking to book his spot in the tournament.

He’s a relatively strong grass court player, whereas Altmaier had a losing record on the surface in each of the past three seasons.

Shapovalov is the pick here.

Stan Wawrinka vs. Gael Monfils

There is perhaps no other second-round match more intriguing than Stan Wawrinka vs. Gael Monfils, who have a combined age of 76.

The two former top-10 ranked players, however, are still playing at a relatively high level.

Monfils, 17-14 this season, beat 22nd seed Adrian Mannarino in the first round in four sets, while Wawrinka earned a three-set victory over wild card Charles Broom.

This will be their eighth meeting, with Wawrinka leading the head-to-head series 4-3.

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Aleksander Vukic

Alcaraz, the defending Wimbledon champion, is likely to make another run to the finals this year, but it might not be a cakewalk against Aleksander Vukic, who scored a momentum-building five-set win over Sebastian Ofner in the first round and has been having a solid season with a record of 8-5 on grass.

Vukic, interestingly, is 1-0 in his career against Alcaraz, beating him back in 2020 in qualifying for the French Open.

Alcaraz will even the head-to-head series here, but betting the over on total games could be a solid option.

Previous Betting News

The most prestigious Grand Slam of the season gets underway on Monday, July 3, as Wimbledon 2023 begins. The opening day of the Grand Slam will be a hugely exciting day on the calendar, and some of the biggest players from across the WTA and ATP Tours will be in action at SW19.

Below, you can find the latest picks for some of the standout matches and the latest Wimbledon betting lines for the outright winners of the men’s and women’s tournaments.

2023 Wimbledon Championships | 136th edition of the Wimbledon Championships
Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Singles First Round: July 3-4, 2023

Iga Swiatek vs Lin Zhu

The top seed in the women’s draw will be in action on the opening day, as the commanding favorite to win the title will be on Court 1 against Lin Zhu. Iga Swiatek comes into the tournament in excellent form after reaching the final four of the Homburg Open, while she will be chasing a second straight Grand Slam title.

However, she is yet to go further than the fourth round at Wimbledon and has a win rate of just 63%. Lin Zhu could present a stern test after reaching the last four on the grass at the Birmingham Classic.

However, the Chinese player has reached the second round on just one previous occasion from seven previous appearances at Wimbledon. It should be a straightforward assignment for the world number one.

Pick: Iga Swiatek to win 2-0 (-598)

Coco Gauff vs Sofia Kenin

One of the standout matches in the opening round of the women’s draw sees Coco Gauff take on qualifier Sofia Kenin. Gauff is the fourth seed at Wimbledon this year, and she has reached the fourth round on two previous occasions.

The American boasts a 73% win rate at the Grand Slam and comes into the tournament in excellent form after reaching the semi-finals at the main female prep tournament in Eastbourne.

However, there could be value in siding with Russian-born American citizen Kenin, who didn’t drop a set in three qualifying matches to earn a spot in the opening round at Wimbledon. The former world number four has looked back to her best since the turn of the year, and she often excels on the grass.

ATP Wimbledon Pick: Sofia Kenin (+270) | Bet Wimbledon Women’s Singles to Win

Jannik Sinner vs Juan Cerundolo

The final match on Centre Court on Monday will see Jannik Sinner take on Juan Cerundolo. Sinner has been incredibly consistent in Grand Slam tournaments, having reached the last eight in each of Wimbledon, the US Open, and Australian Open in 2022.

He comes into Wimbledon after winning his fourth singles title and currently sits at a career-high eighth in the world rankings. Juan Cerundolo looks ready for this huge test, as the 21-year-old won a sixth Challenger title earlier this year.

He was handed direct entry into the Grand Slam for the first time this year. We expect Cerundolo to give a solid account but Sinner to progress with a 3-1 win.

2023 Wimbledon Outright Odds

Iga Swiatek is the leading contender in the women’s draw, as the Polish world number one is currently +228 to win Wimbledon for the first time. Last year’s champion Elena Rybakina is competitively valued at +390, with Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka available at +480.

Novak Djokovic has been dominant at Wimbledon since 2018 and is unbeaten at the Grand Slam since 2017. The Serbian is favored in the men’s betting at -196, with Carlos Alcaraz available at +320. Jannik Sinner is a +1525 chance, with Daniil Medvedev priced up at +1775.
