Series History

Marquette’s all-time series with DePaul dates back to the 1917-18 season (second year of MU’s varsity history) and includes 133 previous meetings, the highest total against any single opponent in team history. The Golden Eagles own an 83-50 advantage. Marquette swept the home-and-home series in 2022-23 and have won four of the last five contests. The most recent matchup resulted in a 90-84 win by Marquette at Fiserv Forum on Feb. 25, 2023. Guards Tyler Kolek and Kam Jones both scored 22 points in the victory.

Why Bet on Marquette Golden Eagles?

No. 14 Marquette (13-5, 4-3 Big East) comes off a second straight win Saturday, 73-72 at St. John’s. The Red Storm nearly rallied all the way back from a 13-point deficit with 6:20 remaining and had two opportunities to take the lead in the final 10 seconds. Daniss Jenkins scored eight of St. John’s final 10 points and had a look to win it at the buzzer, but his 3-point attempt was just off the mark.

After trailing by six at halftime, the Golden Eagles shot 75.0 percent (18-24 FG) from the field in the second half and knocked down 6-of-9 (66.7 pct) 3-point attempts. All five starters finished with double figures in points, led by forward Oso Ighodaro’s 17 points and guard Tyler Kolek chipped in 15 points and 11 rebounds for his eight-career double-double. In the last two outings, Kolek averaged 18.0 points, 11.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds while shooting 50.0 percent (13-of-26) from the floor overall. The All-American is on pace to become the fifth player (Tony Miller, Travis Diener, Dominic James and Aaron Hutchins) in school history with 1,000 career points (922) and 500 assists (582).

Guard Stevie Mitchell finished with a season-high 12 points, his third double-digit effort of the season. In five games since missing four games with a hamstring injury, Mitchell has elevated his contributions at both ends of the court. Over that span, Mitchell is contributing 9.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game in nearly 28 minutes per night, all well above his season-long averages.

Kam Jones had 11 points vs. St. John’s and now has 1,042 career points (44th at MU), the 51st player in school history with 1,000 points, and first since all-time leading scorer Markus Howard (2016-20 – 2,761). Jones has reached double figures in 17-of-18 games this season and is ranked 14th in the Big East in scoring (15.1 ppg.).

MU has featured five double-digit scorers on three occasions (Southern, St. Thomas, St. John’s) in 2023-24. MU’s offensive shot selection prioritizes 3-pointers and attempts at the rim and in the last two games the team has been making a living in the lane. In the last two games, Marquette has combined for 112 points in the paint, 52 against St. John’s and 60 versus Villanova.

The Golden Eagles rank first in the Big East and fourth in the nation in turnover margin (+6.1). MU has forced 10-or-more turnovers (16.2 per game, 12th in nation) in each of the 18 outings this season and converted those miscues into an average of 19.6 points per game.

Why Bet on DePaul Blue Demons?

DePaul fired coach Tony Stubblefield on Monday. Stubblefield, who had been assistant coach at Oregon for the previous 11 years, was hired in 2021 to replace Dave Leitao. After showing early promise with a 15-16 campaign in Year 1, DePaul has struggled to be competitive in the Big East.

@ Villanova – L94-69

@ Georgetown – L68-65

Stubblefield finished with a record of 28-54 at DePaul, a winning percentage of .341 that almost certainly would have plummeted below Oliver Purnell’s .340 (in 2010-15) had he been allowed to complete his third season. The current team is off to a nightmarish 3-15 start, with an 0-7 mark in the Big East. Only one of their seven Big East defeats has been by fewer than 14 points and five of the seven losses have been by at least 25 points. Matt Brady, who served as special assistant to the head coach, will be the interim head coach for the rest of the season.

‘‘After evaluating the current state of our men’s basketball program, a decision was made to make a change in the head coaching position,’’ athletic director DeWayne Peevy said in a statement. ‘‘We want to thank Coach Stubblefield for his hard work and determination over the last two-plus seasons to move our basketball program forward through a new era for DePaul Athletics. Unfortunately, we did not meet our goals.’’

The firing of Stubblefield marks DePaul’s fifth head coaching change since its last NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004. The Blue Demons’ NCAA tournament drought is the longest among power-conference programs. Only Washington State and Boston College also haven’t made it in more than a decade.

The Blue Demons have eight total newcomers, including five Division 1 transfers. Of DePaul’s 13 players on the roster, Chico Carter Jr. is the only one who will conclude his eligibility at the end of the 2023-24 season. Carter’s 42.6 three-point percentage ranks seventh among all active Division I players.

Apparently, Saturday’s 74-60 loss at Butler was the last straw for Peevy. The Blue Demons were led by Jalen Terry with a season-high 15 points and six rebounds. Terry tied his personal best with five made three-pointers. Terry was joined in double-digit scoring by Elijah Fisher and K.T. Raimey with 13 and 12, respectively.

DePaul shot 7-of-19 from three (36.8 percent) against a Butler team that had held opponents to 31.5 percent this season. The Blue Demons led the Big East in three-point shooting through non-conference play with a 37.1 percentage but have shot just 28.5 percent in conference play.
