The schools split last season, each winning at home. Maryland prevailed 68-54 in College Park when it was unranked like now and Purdue was No. 3. Jahmir Young scored 20 points for the Terps, who trailed 37-29 before erupting on a 29-4 burst to take control. Hakim Hart added 13 points for Maryland, which defeated a top-three team for the first time since toppling then-No. 3 Iowa 74-68 on Jan. 28, 2016. Zach Edey and Braden Smith both scored 18 points for Purdue. The Boilermakers were outrebounded 35-23 by the smaller Terps. Purdue leads 8-6 all-time.

Why Bet on #1 Purdue Boilermakers?

Purdue (12-1) remained atop the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll for the third straight week Monday. The Boilermakers picked up three more first-place votes and had 49 of 63 from the national media panel, easily outdistancing second-place Kansas, which received five first-place nods. Houston remained third despite keeping its perfect record intact with a victory over Penn and picking up the other nine first-place votes.

The Boilers won their fifth game in a row Friday, 80-53 over Eastern Kentucky. Purdue had seven players score between seven and 14 points. The Boilermaker bench combined for 27 points. Mason Gillis narrowly missed his first career double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Purdue is 28-3 during his career when he makes two or more 3-pointers in a game.

Zach Edey tallied 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal to record his 64th straight game in double-figures. Edey reached 300 points, 30 blocks and 12 wins in the first 13 games of the season, becoming the first player (college or NBA) since the Lakers‘ Shaquille O’Neal in 2001-02 to do this.

Trey Kaufman-Renn scored in double-figures for the second straight game for the first time in his career with 10 points and six rebounds. In 36 minutes over the last two games, he has 25 points, 12 rebounds and four assists, while going 10-of-16 from the field.

Purdue won its 35th straight non-conference, regular-season game, good for the ninth-longest streak in NCAA history and the second-longest streak in Big Ten history. Purdue became the third team in the last 50 years (Syracuse 2010 to 2012; Duke 1992-94) to record three straight unbeaten, non-conference regular seasons.

During Purdue’s streak, it has beaten 15 top-100 KenPom teams and 12 top-50 KenPom teams. Eleven of the teams were top-20 KenPom teams, and seven were ranked in the top 11 of the AP Top 25 poll. The win was also Purdue’s 26th straight non-conference home win dating to Nov. 9, 2019, vs. Texas. The 26 straight wins is one shy of the school record for non-conference home victories.

Purdue has scored at least 80 points in seven straight games, matching the longest streak for the Boilermakers since the 1987-88 season (10 games). But this will be a different challenge on Tuesday.

“We still haven’t won a road game and we’re going into a beehive where they didn’t lose in the Big Ten last season,” Coach Matt Painter said of visiting Maryland. “I feel like we’ve made strides. We have experience. We have some guys who went through some things. We have different guys off the bench that play off the bench, depending how the night unfolds.”

Why Bet on Maryland Terrapins?

Maryland (9-4) won its fifth straight game last Thursday, 75-53 over Coppin State. Jahari Long scored a career-high 15 points in his first career start as a Terp. It was Maryland’s 19th consecutive win at home, a streak that began with a December 2022 win over Saint Peter‘s. The 19 straight wins rank fourth nationally and is the longest streak among power conference teams. The win is also the Terps’ fifth straight and eighth over the last nine games.

@ UCLA – W69-60
vs Nicholls – W73-67
vs Alcorn St. – W105-65
vs Penn State – W81-75

Long started in place of star Jahmir Young, who is dealing with a minor injury but likely to play Tuesday. Young has been named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 and is a member of the Bob Cousy Award Watch List as well. Young was also a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team last year, the first unanimous pick for Maryland since Cowan in 2019. Young’s 2,206 career points ranks 2nd among active players in the NCAA behind Max Abmas of Texas (2,756 pts). Young leads the Terps having scored in all 132 career games played. Only six times has he been held under 5 points in that stretch. Overall, Young has 117 double-figure scoring games with 47 20-point efforts. Young’s 47 20-point games are the most among all active Big Ten players.

The Terps entered halftime vs. Coppin State with a 20-point advantage and stifled the Eagles until the end. Maryland’s defense surrendered a season-low 18 points in the first half while holding Coppin State to 8-of-25 (32%) shooting from the floor.

Julian Reese paced all Terps’ scorers with 18 points on 9-13 shooting. He also grabbed 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double this season and 13th of his career. Donta Scott played in his 142nd career game as a Terp setting a new program record. Jake Layman (2012-16) and Juan Dixon (1998-02) held the previous record of 141 games. Scott was one of three Terps to reach double figures with 12 points on the night.

Maryland will be looking for its 20th consecutive home win, its sixth straight win overall, and its ninth win in the last 10 games on Tuesday. The Terps also hold a 14-game Big Ten win streak in place highlighted by going 10-0 in league play last year.

The Terps are 10-31 all-time against No. 1-ranked opponents, last beating the best team in the land on Jan. 19, 2008, when Maryland knocked off No. 1 North Carolina, 82-80, at the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill. James Gist had 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Terps and end UNC’s 18-0 start to the season. Bambale Osby’s layup with 21 seconds left in the game gave the Terps the win.

Maryland’s last game against a No. 1 team came last year (March 18, 2023), when the Terps lost to No. 1 Alabama, 73-51, in the NCAA Tournament. The Terps have lost their last five games against the No. 1 team dating to that win against UNC in 2008.

MyBookie’s College Basketball Pick of Day: Purdue at Maryland

Six top-25 NCAA men’s basketball teams are in action on Thursday. Purdue (23-3), currently ranked third in the nation and first in the Big Ten, looks to hold tight to its position with a win against Maryland (17-8). The Terrapins are 7-3 in their last 10 games and sit in eighth in the Big Ten. They’re coming off of a 74-68 win over Penn State on Saturday.

Purdue, meanwhile, lost to Northwestern 64-58 on Sunday in somewhat of an upset that could keep the Boilermakers from finishing the season as the top-ranked team in the country. Purdue has just five games left in the regular season, while the Terrapins have six. Check out MyBookie’s College Basketball betting odds for the pick of day.

Purdue Betting Preview

After dropping their first game of the season to Rutgers on January 2, the Boilermakers had won nine games in a row from January 5 to February 1, but it’s been up-and-down for the team since. They’ve lost two of their last four games, but still hold a comfortable lead in first place in the Big Ten with a 12-3 conference record. Indiana, which beat Purdue 78-74 on February 4, is in second place at 9-5.

Purdue averages 73.9 PPG, so it was a surprise they were limited to just 58 by Northwestern. They shot just 36 percent on 17-for-47 shooting in that game and hit only 5-for-22 three-point attempts.

The Boilermakers, however, aren’t much of a three-point team. Led by Canadian center Zach Edey, they like to get the ball down low in the post and let the big man go to work. Edey is averaging 22.2 points and 13 rebounds per game. The Boilermakers are ninth in the country, with 36.9 rebounds per game.

Maryland Betting Preview

Although they’re three games back of the Boilermakers for first in the Big Ten, there’s still a path for Maryland to finish atop the conference, but they’ll need some help. A win tonight would also be a big help.

Maryland lost 58-55 to Purdue on the road on January 22. They were down 35-21 at halftime but rallied to make it a one-score game. They’ll have a shot at redemption at home, where they’re 13-1 this season. Moreover, the Terrapins are 4-2 all-time at home against the Boilermakers.

Maryland benefits from balanced scoring. They have four players averaging double-digit points per game. Guard Jahmir Young is the team’s leading scorer with 16.2 PPG; he has scored above his average, however, in eight of his last 10 games.

Purdue vs. Maryland Betting Odds and Prediction

The line for Thursday’s game has yet to be released, but expect the Terrapins to be slight moneyline favorites given their impressive 13-1 record at home this season. They may even be given 1 or 2 points against the spread (ATS).

If that’s the case (or if Purdue are favored on the spread), then it’s not a bad idea to take the Terrapins ATS. Maryland is 7-2-1 ATS in its last 10 games against Purdue.
