Purdue Boilermakers NCAAB Line +157

Purdue (4-0) was ranked 13th on Saturday when it beat visiting No. 2 Alabama 87-78 and then jumped to No. 6 in the new AP Top 25 on Monday. After Alabama took its largest lead at 65-59, Trey Kaufman-Renn answered with a basket and CJ Cox made three straight 3-pointers to fuel a 13-0 run that gave the Boilermakers a 72-65 advantage with 8:17 to play. They never trailed again.

Braden Smith

Boilers’ star Smith tallied his 11th career double-double with 17 points, 10 assists and six rebounds, while committing just one turnover. He is the first player in at least the last 25 years to have at least 17 points, 10 assists and 6 rebounds against a top-2 ranked opponent. Smith moved into third place on Purdue’s career assists list with 483 in just 78 games. He only trails Bruce Parkinson (690) and Brian Walker (572). Smith also moved into 23rd on the Big Ten’s all-time assists list.

Trey Kaufman-Renn

Kaufman-Renn scored a career-high 26 points with eight rebounds and four assists, while Cox scored 11 points, including three straight 3-pointers as Purdue turned a two-point deficit into a seven-point lead. Purdue’s three turnovers tied the school record for the fewest turnovers in a game. Alabama was the highest-ranked, non-conference opponent that Purdue has ever beaten in Mackey Arena. With Arizona‘s loss to Wisconsin on Friday night, Purdue now has the nation’s longest win streak in November at 25 games.

The Streak

The Boilers have now won 39 straight regular-season, non-conference games, which is tied for the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history. Eight of the wins have come against teams ranked in the top 11 of the AP poll, including six coming against the top seven. Purdue has won 25 straight games in the month of November with seven of the wins coming against teams ranked in the nation’s top 11 of the AP poll. With Arizona falling, Purdue has the nation’s-longest win streak in the month of March.

To Keep an Eye

The trio of Smith, Kaufman-Renn and Fletcher Loyer and Braden Smith have combined to average 50.5 points and 15.3 assists per game so far this season. The trio has scored 113 points (out of 179 points) in the last two games (53 vs. Yale; 60 vs. Alabama). The last time Purdue had three players average at least 15.0 points per game was in 2009-10 (Robbie Hummel, JaJuan Johnson, E’Twaun Moore).

Purdue is now 10-2 since the 2021-22 season against top-10 ranked teams, and 20-6 against ranked teams. Both marks are the best in the country. This marks the 15th straight year that Purdue has faced top-20 opponents in consecutive games. Since the 2021-22 season when playing consecutive top-20 ranked opponents, the Boilermakers own a 10-0 record.

Purdue has had success in Milwaukee and Fiserv Forum. The Boilermakers advanced to the Sweet 16 out of Milwaukee in the 2017 (Bradley Center) and 2022 (Fiserv Forum). Purdue did fall to Marquette in the Fiserv Forum in the 2019 Gavitt Games (65-55).

Marquette Golden Eagles NCAAB Line -196

No. 15 Marquette (4-0) played another Big Ten team last Friday and won 78-74 at Maryland. The Golden Eagles led 74-66 with 1:07 left before the Terrapins charged back. It was 76-74 when Maryland’s DeShawn Harris-Smith stepped to the foul line for two shots with 14.7 seconds remaining. That stopped the rally.

Shaka Smart

“Foul trouble was an issue for us. I thought our guys hung in there through that, but I just appreciate our guys’ togetherness, grit and character to hang in there when, in the first half, the ball wouldn’t go in for us. We were getting good shots, we were missing a lot of layups, a lot of open shots. But they hung in there I liked the clarity in their eyes at halftime. And it’s a good program win. Obviously, we got a lot of getting better to do,” Coach Smart said.

Kam Jones

Senior guard Jones scored 28 points and classmate Stevie Mitchell finished with 18 points, including some clutch free throws down the stretch. Freshman Damarius Owens, who missed the first three games of the season with a foot injury, made his collegiate debut and netted his first career points.

Royce Parham

Fellow freshman forward Parham has posted personal-best marks in points in each of the last two outings, most recently netting 10 points in the victory at Maryland. He finished 4-of-5 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from deep in just 13 minutes of action. In the last two outings, he has contributed 9. 5 points per contest while shooting 7-of-10 from the floor overall and 3-of-6 from behind the 3-point line. For the season, Parham is chipping in 6.3 points per outing, the best mark of any Marquette reserve through four games. Junior guard Chase Ross has had an impact at both ends of the court through the first four games of the season and is averaging 13.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals.

Big East Player of the Week

Jones, incidentally, was named with this important acknowledgment on Monday as he averaged 20.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in a 2-0 week. Jones owns nine career games of 25-or-more points, including two this season, and claimed the league’s weekly award twice last season and once in 2022-23. The Memphis native currently owns 1,487 career points (18th at MU) and has a chance to move up as high as second on the all-time list behind Markus Howard (2016-20 – 2,761), who ranks 23rd in NCAA history.

Smart and his staff place an emphasis on the number of deflections the team collects on a per game basis, with the target goal each outing a total of 32. In four games this season, MU has averaged 45.3 deflections per game (181 total). The single-game high under Smart at MU is 65 against Central Michigan on Nov. 11. The Golden Eagles have been smothering opponents, averaging 12.3 steals and forcing 18 turnovers per game.

Purdue vs Marquette Last Meeting

The teams played in the championship game of last season’s Maui Invitational and Purdue won 78-75 when it was ranked No. 2 and Marquette No. 4. Zach Edey had 28 points and 15 rebounds and of course is now in the NBA. Purdue led by 15 early in the second half, but Marquette chipped away and pulled to 76-75 on a basket by Oso Ighodaro with less than a minute left. Edey gave his team some breathing room with a right-handed putback of Braden Smith’s missed jumper for a 78-75 lead with 18 seconds remaining. Marquette had two chances to tie it, but 3-point attempts by Tyler Kolek and Kam Jones in the closing seconds failed to drop. Purdue leads the all-time series 11-1.

Butler at Marquette

Butler was ranked 16 th in last week’s AP Top 25 but might be out of the polls later Monday as the Bulldogs enter Tuesday’s Big East matchup at Marquette having lost back-to- back games. Marquette could use a quality win like this to boost its NCAA Tournament resume and likely will be a slight NCAA basketball betting favorite.

When: Tuesday, Feb. 7, 9 PM ET Where: BMO Harris Bradley Center, Milwaukee TV: CBS Sports Network Stream: CBSSports.com Radio: Butler / Marquette Opening NCAA Basketball Lines: TBA

Why Bet On Butler?

The Bulldogs have been off since a 76-67 loss to No. 22 Creighton on Tuesday. The Bluejays used a run in each half to create space. With Butler leading 24-17 with 9:20 remaining in the first half, Creighton went on a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 29-24 lead and an eventual 37-33 halftime edge. In the opening minutes of the second half, Butler re-took the lead 38-37. That would prove to be the Bulldogs’ last lead of the contest. Creighton went on a 17-4 run over the next 3:30 to take a 54-42 lead. At that point in the game, Creighton was 11-of- 17 from behind the arc. Kamar Baldwin led the Bulldogs with 14 points. Kelan Martin added 11 points and eight rebounds. Butler shot 41 percent from the field, and just 26 percent (7-of- 27) from behind the arc. The Bulldogs had a 35-27 advantage on the boards. Each team had 13 turnovers. On the season, the Bulldogs are averaging only 9.9 turnovers per game. That mark is third nationally. Butler had a season-low four turnovers – including none in the second half – against Marquette Jan. 16. The Bulldogs have posted 10 or fewer miscues in 12 games this season, including only six in the overtime game at DePaul Jan. 21. Butler’s turnover margin of +4.0 leads the Big East and is 10th nationally. Butler is 10-2 this season when committing 10 or fewer turnovers. Butler and Houston share the longest current streak of games committing 15 or fewer turnovers. That streak is currently at 38. For Butler, that dates back to a win over St. John’s Jan. 16, 2016. Martin is a finalist for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award. Martin's 16.3 points per game lead the 18-5 Bulldogs. His 5.7 rebounds is also the team-high.

Why Bet On Marquette?

The Golden Eagles (15-8) are off a 92-79 win over DePaul on Saturday. Marquette’s bench did plenty damage in the game, accounting for 41 of their points. This impact was immediately evident, as head coach Steve Wojciechowski lifted four of his starters for his bench guys at the 14:16 mark of the first half with MU trailing 14-7. Backed by a four pack of three-pointers, that crew (plus Haanif Cheatham) went on an 18-0 run to jump out to an 11-point lead. Two of the triples came from Andrew Rowsey, who finished the game with a game high 22 points on just eight shots. Marquette hit a season-best 14 3-pointers in the victory and were led by redshirt junior guard Andrew Rowsey, who notched a game-high 22 points on just eight shots from the floor. It is Rowsey’s seventh 20-point performance on the year and the third time this season that he has hit at least five triples. Senior center Luke Fischer held down Marquette’s backline with a near triple-double of 13 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks. Since Jan. 14, Rowsey is contributing a team-best 16.3 points per game while shooting an extremely efficient 60.0 percent from the field overall and 20-of- 34 from behind the 3-point line. The league’s top free throw shooter is 90.0 percent from the charity stripe during that time and has scored 20-or- more points four times (leads team with seven on the year). Marquette lost at Butler 88-80 on Jan. 16. The Golden Eagles should have won that one, leading by as many as 18 early in the second half. The Bulldogs outscored Marquette 63-39 in the second half, shooting an astounding 70 percent without a single turnover.
