Prior to the season, the Indianapolis Colts were the huge favorites to win the AFC South. After 5 weeks, no one is really sure what to make of the division. The Colts are now 2-2-1, and will host their divisional rivals, the Jacksonville Jaguars, this Sunday. This is a big game in the divisional race for both of them, as they try to keep pace with the Tennessee Titans.
The Jaguars enter this one with a 2-3 overall record. After surprising everyone through four weeks, Jacksonville struggled last week and lost a 13-6 contest to the Houston Texans. Jacksonville will look to rebound from that bad loss, but the Colts will have some extra motivation in this one. This will be the second time these teams have met this season, as the Jaguars shut out the Colts 24-0 in Week 2.
Let’s briefly preview each of the two teams, and then we’ll give you our NFL Betting predictions for the big AFC South showdown.
A Key Showdown in the AFC South | NFL Week 6 Betting Preview for Jaguars versus Colts
Jacksonville Jaguars
Just when everyone thought that the Jaguars had things rolling, they then hit a snag against the Texans. Trevor Lawrence, who many thought had taken the next step under the tutelage of Doug Pederson, was awful, and was one of the main reasons the Jags lost. We’ll see how he handles the strong Indianapolis defense.
Jacksonville has a nice arsenal of weapons that Lawrence can take advantage of. Christian Kirk has done a great job after coming from Arizona via free agency. He has been Lawrence’s top target on the season. James Robinson and Travis Etienne have done a nice job out of the backfield.
Jacksonville’s young defense has looked good at times this season, but their inexperience has been an issue at others. They’re not sure who’ll be available for the Colts on Sunday, so that will go a long way in how the Jags choose to defend Indianapolis. We do know that we should see a lot of blitzing from the Jags, as Matt Ryan has been under constant pressure this season.
Indianapolis Colts
The Colts have been a disappointment this season. Matt Ryan has not lived up to expectations, the offensive line has struggled, and the Colts offense just hasn’t been able to get anything going. Many are starting to blame head coach Frank Reich, who could very well be on the hot seat.
One factor that has hurt the Colts offense, is the loss of Jonathan Taylor. Taylor has missed most of the last two games with a leg injury. Taylor’s replacement, Nyhiem Hines, was concussed early in his first start, so he missed time as well. Combine that with a struggling offensive line, and it’s a recipe for a poor offense.
We’re not sure if Taylor will be ready to play on Sunday or not. It sounds like he’s going to try to give it a go, but if he isn’t able to play, it will be a huge loss for the Colts.
Prediction
While the Colts have been struggling, the Texans showed everyone that Lawrence has taken the jump that everyone thought he had. Indianapolis is a 2.5-point favorite in this one. While we don’t think we’ll see a lot of points scored, we have the Colts winning 20-17. The Colts win, and cover the spread in the process.
