There’s a lot of mystery surrounding Sunday’s New England vs. Green Bay matchup. The Patriots will head to historic Lambeau Field, and they will have a new starting quarterback. Bill Belichick confirmed on Wednesday that veteran backup Brian Hoyer would get the start on Sunday. Hoyer will start due to an injury to starting quarterback Mac Jones.
Here’s where the mystery comes in. Belichick has yet to really give anyone much of a status on Jones’s high ankle sprain. The Patriots coach said that the injury had gotten better over the past few days, but he would not say whether or not Jones will be able to play on Sunday. So, even though Hoyer is starting, Jones still could make an appearance.
Let’s take a brief look at each team, and then we’ll give you our prediction for Sunday’s matchup so you can place your bets against their NFL Odds.
Will Green Bay Have An Easy Time With the Hobbled New England Patriots?
New England Patriots
The Patriots come into this one with a 1-2 record. Their losses have come to the Miami Dolphins and the Baltimore Ravens. This may be one of Belichick’s least-talented teams. Offensively, the Patriots have struggled this season. Former Patriots defensive coordinator, Matt Patricia, came back after a failed head coaching stint in Detroit, and is now running the Pats offense. The jury is out on Patricia right now. With a fairly mediocre group of receivers, and Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson not getting much done on the ground, the offense has been anemic thus far this season.
Defensively, this isn’t a typical Patriots team. While Matthew Judon and Devin McCourty have played well, the rest of the defense hasn’t been real strong. The Patriots have been known for their stout defenses over the years, but this group isn’t as strong as units from previous seasons.
Green Bay Packers
Just like last season, the Packers looked awful in Week 1 against the Vikings. Many were ready to write the Pack off. Well, Aaron Rodgers and company have come back strong, and have won their last two games. While Rodgers doesn’t have a go-to receiver, and the receiving corps, in general, isn’t real strong, he’s still found a way to get things done. Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon have been two of the reasons that the offense has been fairly good so far.
On the defensive side of the ball, Green Bay just keeps getting better. While this defense isn’t flashy, and lacks true superstars, it just finds a way to stifle the opponent. This group could end up being one of the better defenses in the league by the end of the season.
Prediction
You know it’s a bad season for the Patriots when they’re a 10-point underdog to anyone. Well, that’s the case this week when they play the Packers. We don’t expect to see a lot of points being scored, as, without Mac Jones, we expect to see a grind-it-out game plan from the Patriots.
The Packers’ offense hasn’t exactly been lighting the world on fire either. AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones should plan on getting a lot of work on Sunday.
While 10 is a lot of points, with Brian Hoyer starting for New England, we think the Packers will win the game and win it by at least 14 points.
