49ers’ Defensive Changes During the Offseason
San Francisco made one of the most significant free agent moves this offseason when the Niners signed former Eagle Javon Hargraves. The massive defensive lineman had a stellar season.
SF also signed Isaiah Oliver to play slot corner and in nickel packages. Another change happened when the 49ers promoted EDGE Drake Jackson, a 2022 second round pick to the first team.
San Francisco 49ers Defensive Line Analysis
EDGE Nick Bosa is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Bosa won the award without playing on the same line as Hargraves.
Hargraves boosts the Niners defensive line up a notch. Although many feel the Eagles continue to have the league’s top D-line because Philly drafted Georgia’s Jalen Carter, it’s tough not to make the Niners number one.
Arik Armstead is a rock. So if Jackson is what San Francisco believes he is, SF is number one.
San Francisco 49ers Secondary Analysis
Charvarious Ward is one of the top corners in the league. Tashaun Gipson is one of the NFL’s best free safeties.
Talanoa Hufanga should take the next step into the elite strong safety category. If corner Deommodore Lenoir takes the next step, like the Niners’ defensive line, SF’s secondary could end up the best in the NFL.
San Francisco 49ers Linebackers Analysis
Most NFL analysts agree that the San Francisco 49ers boast the league’s top linebacking group. Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw might be the best linebackers in the league.
Oren Burks will take over the run stopper role that Azeez Al-Shaair had. Also, the group is deep. Listed third on the depth chart players Jalen Graham and Dee Winters would push for starter minutes on other teams.
San Francisco Points Allowed & Yards Allowed Per Game Range Prediction
San Francisco ranked first in total yards allowed per game last season. The team ranked first in points allowed per.
We should expect similar averages this season. San Francisco will allow around 300 yard per game just like 2022. Teams will average around 16 to 18 points per game against the Niners excellent defense.
49ers Yards Allowed Per Game Range: 295 – 302
49ers Points Allowed Range: 15 to 18
EDGE Nick Bosa to Win NFL Defensive Player of the Year: +1200
Analysis:
Bosa had an unreal season. Nick posted 41 solo tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and 18.5 sacks.
No doubt, Bosa could produce similar, if not better, stats this season. Javon Hargraves is legit. Hargraves demands double-teams, which means Bosa should be alone on the edge. A 20 or more sack season is not out of the question. The +1200 odds make Nick Bosa an overlay to pull off the defensive player of the year repeat.
