The Preliminary Round, otherwise known as the group stage, in the Olympic soccer tournament is over, and we are now heading into the knockout phase.
The 8 remaining nations on the men’s side of things will play on Friday, while the women, who we are going to focus on here, will get into the quarterfinals on Saturday.
My Analysis
We have seen enough of each of the remaining teams to have a pretty solid idea of how they will play moving forward, but they will all know that we are at the stage where one-off game means that the hunt for a gold medal is over.
Let’s take a look at the 4 upcoming games as we try to pick some winners.
^United States -147 vs Japan +370
Saturday, 9 AM EST | You really can’t do any better than what the US women did in the group stage, winning all 3 games to advance as the group winners.
They outscored the opposition 9-2 and have what looks to be a manageable game against Japan.
After starting with a tight loss to Spain, Japan bounced back to win their final two games to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
Japan will be a difficult opponent, but the US is unbeaten against them in their last 5 meetings, winning 4 and drawing 1.
Olympic Soccer Pick: United States 3-1 Japan Draw: +295 |
MyBookie Olympics Odds & Lines to Win
Spain -330 vs Colombia +800
Saturday, 11 AM EST | Spain came into this tournament as one of the favorites to win the gold medal, and the world champions have looked good to this point.
They won all 3 of their group stage games, scoring 5 and surrendering just 1.
Colombia managed a 1 win in the group stage and had a chance to win the group, but they lost 1-0 in their final game and had to settle for one of the best 3rd place finisher spots. I think they are in trouble here.
Olympic Soccer Pick: Spain 2-0 Colombia Draw: +440 |
Canada +212 vs Germany +118
Saturday, 1 PM EST | It has been a tough road to this point for Canada, despite winning all 3 of their group games.
They were dinged 6 points after being found using drones to spy on their opposition. Still, they found a way through and now have a tough matchup against Germany.
The Germans had a pair of comfortable wins in the group stage, but they also suffered a 4-1 hammering at the hands of the United States.
This might well be the best matchup of the quarterfinals and it should be a close one.
Olympic Soccer Pick: Canada 2-1 Germany Draw: +440 |
France -139 vs Brazil +350
Saturday, 3 PM EST | Much of the pressure is squarely on the shoulders of the host nation, France, and some cracks certainly showed in the group stage.
They won 2 and lost 1, winning the group, but they would have had to settle for 2nd if not for Canada being docked points.
Brazil opened with a win before losing back-to-back games, needing to settle for one of the 3rd place spots in the knockout stage.
I think they are going to have a hard time pulling out of this mini slump.
Olympic Soccer Pick: France 3-1 Brazil Draw: +290 |

2020 Tokyo Olympics Soccer QuarterFinals
The United State’s Women’s Olympic Soccer Team has a shot to win the gold medal. The USA must first get by the Netherlands for any shot at gold. Over on the men’s side, Brazil, Spain, Japan, and the Republic of Korea look poised to make it to the Olympic Soccer Semifinals. Check out Olympics Betting odds, analysis, and free picks for this weekend’s Olympic Soccer Quarter-Final matches.
Olympics Soccer Women’s and Men’s Quarter-Final Matches
Olympics Soccer Women’s Quarter-Final Matches
Brazil +102 Vs Canada +280
- When: Friday, July 30
So far during the Olympics, Brazil has impressed more than the Canadians. The Brazilians show 2 wins and a draw. The draw happened against the Netherlands in a 3-3 match. Canada shows a victory over Chile and a couple of draws, versus Japan and Great Britain. Brazil is the play.
Soccer Pick: Brazil
Australia +340 Vs Great Britain -120
- When: Friday, July 30
If not for a 2-1 victory against New Zealand on July 21, the Aussies would already be headed home. Sweden blasted Australia 4-2. But the Australians picked it up in their last group match, forcing a 0-0 draw with the overrated U.S. side. Great Britain won their first couple of Olympic matches before drawing with Canada. The British are set for a big performance.
Soccer Pick: Great Britain
Japan +480 Vs Sweden -166
- When: Friday, July 30
No doubt, the best team in the Olympic Women’s Tournament is Sweden. The Swedes followed up an impressive 3-0 beating they placed on the United States with a 4-2 victory over Australia and a 2-0 win against New Zealand. Japan is in some trouble.
Soccer Pick: Sweden
USA +129 Vs Netherlands +180
- When: Friday, July 30
Team USA doesn’t seem to have the same fire they did in past Olympics. Sure, the 6-1 victory over New Zealand was great, but the U.S. followed it up with a 0-0 draw versus Australia. The Netherlands dominated China 8-2 in their final group match. If the Netherlands gets a first half lead, don’t be surprised if a couple of United States’ starters take to the bench in the second-half due to mental health concerns.
Soccer Pick: Netherlands
Olympics Soccer Men’s Quarter-Final Matches
Ivory Coast +1 ½ (-185) Vs Spain -1 ½ (+137)
- When: Saturday, July 31
On paper, Spain should roll. But even though the Spanish are one of the most loaded squads at the 2020 Tokyo Games, they haven’t played like it. The Ivory Coast beat Saudi Arabia and then drew with Brazil and Germany. It’s tough seeing Spain winning this on the handicap. However, we can’t back the Coast at the odds.
Soccer Pick: Spain
New Zealand +1 ½ (+104) Vs Japan -1 ½ (-136)
- When: Saturday, July 31
Japan won all 3 of their group stage matches. On July 28, the Japanese blasted France 4-0. New Zealand played well to make it this far. However, they face a strong opponent in Japan. NZ offers above even money and 1 ½ goals, though. Give the underdog a shot.
Soccer Pick: New Zealand
Egypt +1 ½ (-156) Vs Brazil -1 ½ (+117)
- When: Saturday, July 31
Egypt has played well enough to lose this by a single goal. But we can’t lay the -156 on the Egyptians because Richarlison, who scored 6 goals in 3 group matches, is Brazilian. Richarlison probably gets at least 2 in this. He’ll be the difference on the handicap.
Soccer Pick: Brazil
Mexico +144 Vs Republic of Korea +185
- When: Saturday, July 31
Both these teams have impressed. Let’s not kid ourselves, though. The Republic of Korea is rolling. South Korea blasted Romania 4-0 before dusting Honduras 6-0. Don’t be surprised if South Korea wins this by 2.
Soccer Pick: Republic of Korea
