2023 MLS Cup Playoffs Odds: Who’s In?, Who’s Out?

Not even the magic of Lionel Messi could help Inter Miami climb from last place in the MLS Eastern Conference standings and into the playoffs. But plenty of teams in the league have compelling storylines and an opportunity to win the championship.

There are a few spots left to be sorted out this weekend, but there is already a group of teams that can start planning for making a legitimate run at the cup.

Can St. Louis have a Lasting Debut?

Being an expansion team in American sports used to mean the first five to 10 seasons were going to be difficult. But as leagues have expanded into more non-traditional sports markets, modern leagues have tried to make the transition a little easier.

The Las Vegas Aces had a strong expansion draft and reached the Stanley Cup in their first season. St. Louis City came into the MLS with a hot start.

The club won its first five matches and will enter the playoffs with the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. St. Louis City has the third-best odds to win the MLS Cup at +800. American Nicholas Gioacchini and Brazilian Klauss lead the team with ten goals apiece.

Defending Champions Not Ready to Concede Yet

After winning its first MLS Cup in franchise history last season, LAFC was hit hard in the transfer window and by retirement. The Black and Gold struggled to find its place in the Western Conference this season and hopes to outlast the Seattle Sounders to hold onto the No. 2 seed.

Dennis Bouanga has been an excellent piece for LAFC this season. He has 19 goals and six assists. Carlos Vela is still productive, producing nine goals and seven assists, but he has lost a step. LAFC is +600 to win the crown.

FC Cincinnati Needs to Prove it is Ready for the Big Stage

During its last season in the USL Championship, FC Cincinnati finished in first place in the regular season standings before bowing out in the quarterfinals.

Since joining the MLS in 2019, FC Cincinnati hasn’t had much success. The Orange and Blue didn’t make the playoffs during its first three seasons in the league before taking a step forward in 2022.

FC Cincinnati built on last season’s momentum to earn the No. 1 seed this season in the Eastern Conference by a comfortable margin. The Orange and Blue are the favorites to win the cup at +335.

2023 MLS Cup Playoffs Betting Predictions | Who Else is In?

In the Eastern Conference, the playoffs qualifiers are: FC Cincinnati, Orlando City, Philadelphia, Columbus, New England, Atlanta United, and Nashville.

The last two spots for the play-in series are still be contested. Montreal and D.C. United currently have a leg up in the race.

In the Western Conference, the playoff qualifiers are: St. Louis, LAFC, Seattle Sounders, Houston Dynamic, Vancouver, and Real Salt Lake. Portland is in the seventh spot but has to be worried about being jumped by the two teams below them, San Jose and FC Dallas.

There are several teams on the outside looking in that could also theoretically push past Portland with some luck.
