The opening round of games in the group stage in women’s Olympic soccer have been played, and you have to say that the expected favorites certainly flexed their muscles.
One game does not a tournament make, though, so those teams are going to need to continue stringing together good results if they are to make it to the medal games.
My Analysis
We will get another look at every team this coming Sunday, which is when we have Matchday 2 in women’s Olympic soccer.
There are 6 games on tap, so let’s take a quick look at them all.
^Brazil +175 vs Japan +156
Sunday, 11 AM EST | Given the stature of Brazil as a soccer nation, you have to say that their 1-0 win over Nigeria in their opening game was a little lackluster.
They will be looking for a better showing against Japan, who lost to Spain in their opening game.
Japan will put up a good fight here, but I think they ultimately lose a close one.
Olympic Soccer Pick: Brazil 1-0 Japan Draw: +226 |
New Zealand +540 vs Colombia -196
Sunday, 11 AM EST | Sometimes, you can take positives from a loss, which is surely what Colombia are doing after giving France a handful in a 3-2 opening game defeat.
New Zealand is also looking to bounce back after losing their opening game 1-0, but I think they are in for a tough time here.
The last 2 meetings between these two teams were tight, so more of the same here.
Olympic Soccer Pick: New Zealand 0-1 Colombia Draw: +310 |

Australia -500 vs Zambia +1175
Sunday, 1 PM EST | Both of these teams are looking to bounce back after falling to heavy defeats in Matchday 1.
Australia was rolled by the host nation, while Zambia lost to the United States, in which there is no great shame.
Given that the Aussies are ranked a good deal higher than their opponent here, I am taking them for the win.
Olympic Soccer Pick: Australia 2-0 Zambia Draw: +590 |
Spain -676 vs Nigeria +1525
Sunday, 1 PM EST | While Spain may be the best team in the world right now, they still had to come from behind to win in their opening game, so don’t expect them to just roll to victory here.
Nigeria gave a good account of themselves in a loss to Brazil, but I ultimately think they will lose again here.
Olympic Soccer Pick: Spain 3-0 Nigeria Draw: +670 |
France -165 vs Canada +450
Sunday, 3 PM EST | Both teams opened their quest for gold with a win, so both will be aware that another 3 points puts them in the next round.
France looked dominant in their opening game as the host nation and will once again have the fans on their side for what should be a much tougher task.
Still, you have to like the hosts for the win.
Olympic Soccer Pick: France 2-0 Canada Draw: +290 |
United States +124 vs Germany +216
Sunday, 3 PM EST | This is easily the best game in Matchday 2, with many believing that we will be seeing these two teams meeting again in the gold medal game.
Both teams looked dominant in their opening games, with both running out as 3–0 winners.
This should be an absolute battle and a fun one to watch, but I am giving the slight edge to the US.
Olympic Soccer Pick: United States 2-1 Germany Draw: +236 |
