There are just 3 rounds remaining in the current Superbike season and it is looking like the battle for the World Championship Is going to go all the way down to the final weekend. As we mentioned at the top of this piece, it looked for a while as though Bautista was going to win his second straight world championship without breaking too much of a sweat. Through the opening 6 rounds, Bautista won 16 of 18 races to build up a huge lead, but he has cooled off a little since then, winning just 3 of the last 9 and having some worse than expected showings in that mix, too. His lead at the top of the standings has been reduced to 57 points, and while that is still a good lead, it is not anywhere near as comfortable as it once was. In this event last year, Bautista won 2 of 3 and finished 2nd in the other.

Toprak Razgatlioglu

Given that he is a former champion, we probably should not be surprised that Razgatlioglu has wormed his way back into contention. While Bautista was racking up wins, Toprak was finishing 2nd in many of those races, doing just enough to stay in touch with the overall leader. He has flipped the script over the last 3 rounds, though, winning 5 of the last 9 races to really ramp up the pressure on the champion. Last year at this event, he finished 3rd in all 3 races and will be well aware that he needs a better showing this time around.

Jonathan Rea

Between 2015 and 2020, Rea was an unstoppable force, winning the SBK World Championship 6 straight times. That type of dominance is always difficult to maintain, and while he hasn’t won it all since 2020, Rea has still finished in the top 3 overall each year since then. He is in position to keep that streak alive again in 2023, but he needs a strong finish to make it happen. This is an event that has been good to him, with 3 wins and 3 2nd place finishes in his last 6 runs.

Andrea Locatelli

In his 3rd full season with SBK, Locatelli is once again delivering a very similar performance. He finished 5th and 4th, respectively, in his opening 2 seasons and comes into this weekend once again sitting in 4th overall. Whether he can run down Rea for the 3rd place overall spot remains to be seen, but when you consider that he has yet to win a race at this level, his chances of doing so seem rather slim.
