Every so often a team goes all-in with free agency to land a squad of players that they believe will take them to a Super Bowl. It doesn’t always work, and even when it does, the salary cap has a way of catching up and sending those teams back to the bottom of the pile in rather short order. It certainly worked for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after coaxing Tom Brady away from New England, but his time in the league is now up and the Bucs look like a shadow of the team that won a Super Bowl a couple of years back. How will all of that translate into the coming season? Let’s start by taking a quick look back.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022
On some small level, the 2022 season was a success for the Bucs, as they did manage to win the NFC South. The truth, though, was that they were the best team in what was an incredibly weak division, landing on top with an 8-9 record. That was enough to get them into the playoffs via the Wild Card, where they were taken apart by the Dallas Cowboys, going down 31-14 at the first hurdle. Not long after, Brady announced his retirement for the second straight season, only this time it stuck, leaving the Bucs with some big holes to fill in the offseason.

Bucs Win Total for 2023
Right now, the bookies have the Bucs win total for the upcoming season set at 6 ½, and while some might see that as a little generous, we do have to remember that the NFC South is probably not going to be that great again this year. As far as the QB spot goes, the battle for the top spot looks to be between Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask, neither of whom really inspire a ton of confidence. Mayfield comes in with NFL experience and a couple of good years but those are very much in the rearview. With that in mind, many pundits believe that Tampa should hand the ball to Trask to see what he has. Either way, 6 ½ wins still looks like a big number to surpass.

Division, Conference, and Super Bowl
A quick look at the NFL odds across the board suggests that the bookies don’t really have that much faith in the Buccaneers. They are the longshot team in the NFC at odds of +600, although there does not really appear to be what you would call an outright favorite in that bunch. A good record in divisional play could perhaps deliver a result similar to last season.
As far as being the potential NFC Conference Champion, I think we can rule the Bucs out there, too, as their odds are second to worst at +3900. At this point, it seems foolish to even talk about the Super Bowl, as there really doesn’t seem to be any way that this team is going to get close to the playoffs, never mind a championship run.
