The 43rd Ryder Cup is here after being postponed last season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event will begin on Friday, September 24th, and conclude on Sunday, September 26th. Whistling Straits in Haven, WI is hosts 12 members from Team USA and 12 members from Team Europe.

The Europeans are the defending champion, defeating the Americans 17 ½ to 10 ½ in 2018 at Le Golf National near Paris, France. Europe has won seven of the last nine Ryder Cup events, but Team USA was victorious in 2016, the last time the Cup was held on American soil. Ryder Cup Format

The event takes place over three days with 28 points up for grabs. All the events are match play and awarded one point to the winner. A team needs 14 ½ points or 14 points for the current champion to defend the Cup to win the event.

Friday’s opening day features four pairs of teammates facing off in an alternate shot format followed by four different pairs playing better ball. Saturday is similar to Friday’s, with four rounds of foursome matches and fourball matchups. On the final day, the teams go head-to-head in 12 individual games.

Meet the Teams

Steve Strickler is captain of Team USA and will have assistance from vice-captains Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson, Davis Love III, Phil Mickelson, and Fred Couples. Six players on the 12-man team will be making their first appearance in the event.

The team consists of automatic qualifiers Colin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, and Patrick Cantlay. Strickler’s captain’s selections went to Tony Finau, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Harris English, Daniel Berger, and Scottie Scheffler.

The Europeans will be under the leadership of Padraig Harrington and vice-captains Robert Karlsson, Luke Donald, Martin Kaymer, and Graeme McDowell. Nine automatic qualifiers are handed out for the Euro’s, and three selections are awarded via captain’s choices. Just three rookies are experiencing their first Ryder Cup.

Team Europe is lead by the #1 one player in the world, Jon Rahm. Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrell Hatton, Bernd Wiesberger, Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Paul Casey, Matthew Fitzpatrick, and Lee Westwood. Harrington added Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, and Shane Lowry with his three captain’s choices.
