We are two weeks away from the 122nd U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. Players tee it up beginning on Thursday, June 16th, with the conclusion on Sunday, June 19th. The field is taking shape with final qualifying filling out the remainder of the field over the coming days. 

The Country Club, one of the oldest golf properties in America is no stranger to hosting major tournaments. 2022 will make the fourth time the course has hosted the U.S. Open and the first since 1988.

USGA to Decide on U.S. Open Eligibility of LIV Participants

With the recent news of the first field for the LIV Golf Invitational Series backed by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. The opening tournament is set to take place in London, England at the Centurion Club beginning on June 11. Many names on the list were already leaked, but Dustin Johnson was a major surprise of the 42 players announced.

The PGA Tour stood by its stance that players choosing to participate in the LIV Golf Invitational Series would not be granted release and are subject to any penalty handed down by the PGA. So far, there has been no word on what penalty will be handed to the players that violate their status with the Tour.

The USGA came out with a statement that they will decide on the eligibility of players based on a case-by-case basis. The committee expressed themselves as being the most open major but that they do have the right to review a player’s situation on a case-by-case basis.

Final Qualifying Begins June 6th

The Final Qualifying for the 2022 U.S. Open begins on Monday, June 6th with 871 players competing for the final 77 spots. There are eleven locations in total, with nine remaining in the United States and Canada yet to begin.

The qualifying process is a grind, with the final stage taking place over 36 holes in a single day. The number of players that advance to the U.S. Open is determined based on the number of players and strength of field at the host site.

The remainder of the U.S. Open field is filled with players that are exempt from qualifying. Those players typically include the top players in the world along with the top amateurs in the world.

Former NFL Player Advances to Final Qualifying

One of the players with a chance to earn a spot in the U.S. Open is former NFL running back Danny Woodhead. Woodhead was one of five players to advance out of the Local Qualifier after carding an even-par 71 at the Omaha County Club.

The 37-year-old turned the game of golf following his NFL career and has made it a goal to qualify for the U.S. Open.
