The 2023 Ryder Cup is at our doorstep, and many golf fanatics will be setting their alarms early on Friday to catch the first day of the biannual event between Team USA and Team Europe. The 44th Ryder Cup takes place in Italy this year at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club just outside of Rome.
The Americans are 27-14-2 all-time but have failed to win the Cup on European soil over the last six tournaments. It was 1993 the last time Team USA hoisted the Cup across the pond, when the US defeated Europe, 15-13, at The Belfry.
Both teams consist of 12 players, six that automatically qualify based on criteria by both organizations and six players hand-picked by the captains of each team.
Let’s take a closer look at the individuals on each roster and understand the odds to win Ryder Cup for each team.

Team USA
The American team has a veteran group of players on the roster, along with an influx of youth, with four players making their Ryder Cup debuts. Clark, Harman, Homa, and Burns will tee it up in the event for the first time.
Spieth is the Ryder Cup veteran of the group, having teed it up in 18 prior Ryder Cup matches. The 30-year-old is 8-7-3 all-time, sporting a 52.8% win percentage. Morikawa, Cantlay, and Scheffler dominated in their rookie debuts two years ago, combining for an 8-0-3 record at Whistling Straits.
Only four players on the roster, Spieth, Koepka, Fowler, and Thomas, have played in more than one Ryder Cup. Thomas has the best record of the bunch and a big reason he was a captain’s pick, with a 6-2-1 mark all-time.

Team Europe
On paper, the European team has a lot of firepower at the top. There is no denying the trio of McIlroy, Rahm, and Hovland is one of the best, with the three making up the no. 2, no. 3, and no. 4 ranked players in the world.
Like the Americans, Donald welcomes four fresh faces to the team in MacIntyre, Straka, Hojgaard, and Aberg. Hojgaard (22 years old) and Aberg (23 years old) are the youngest of the bunch.
McIlroy and Rose have combined to play in 51 previous matches, with an all-time tally of 25-20-6 over a combined 11 Ryder Cups. Six of the players on the team have made multiple Ryder Cup appearances.
Historically, Fleetwood has been a pain for the US, showcasing a 4-2-2- mark in eight matches.
Captain: Luke Donald
Vice-Captains: Thomas Bjorn, Edoardo Molinari, Nicolas Colsaerts, Jose Maria Olazabal, Francesco Molinari
Automatic Qualifiers: Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick, Robert MacIntyre
Captain’s Picks: Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, Nicolai Hojgaard, Ludvig Aberg
