The weekend of the Super Bowl also features another sports event. The WM Phoenix Open will take place this weekend from the TPC Scottsdale.
The 7,261 yard, par 71 course will host the event won in back to back years by Scottie Scheffler. The prize pool for the event this season is just shy of $9M.

2024 Phoenix Open | 85th edition of WM Phoenix Open
Thursday, February 8th – Sunday, February 11th, 2024 | ESPN+
TPC Scottsdale, Scottsdale, Arizona
2023 Winner: Scottie Scheffler
Scottie Scheffler | Top 3 WM Phoenix Open
The #1 golfer in the world will look to make it three straight in Phoenix. The 27 year old from Dallas was squarely in the mix at Pebble Beach before the final day was canceled due to weather. Scheffler finished fifth at the Sentry earlier in the season, along with a Top 17 finish at the American Express. In three events this season, he has earned nearly $1.4M. There is a reason he is the top golfer in the world, his consistency and ability to adjust quickly on the course puts him there. Scheffler is listed at +450 to win the event.

Justin Thomas | Top 3 WM Phoenix Open
Thomas checks in at 19th in the world rankings. The 30 year old that played his College golf at Alabama is coming off a season in which he struggled. In his 11th year on the Tour, many expect him to bounce back in a big way. It’s been a good start for 2024 for Thomas. After finishing in a tie for third at the American Express, including a 61 on the third day, he was tied for 6th at Pebble Beach. Part of maneuvering through the WM Phoenix Open is dealing with the loud crowd, and Thomas is a guy that will feed off that. He is listed at +1000 to win the event.

Max Homa | Top 3 WM Phoenix Open
One of the more popular players on the PGA Tour. Homa, who has been on the PGA Tour since 2013 is coming off a tough time at Pebble Beach. He was just -2, and tied for 66 when the event was canceled. The 33 year old does not have the best form coming into the event. He has played in three events, and missed the Top Ten in each of them. But, with his talent, and familiarity with the course, he is still one of the most talented players in the field. Homa is listed at +1600 to win the WM Phoenix Open.

- Jordan Spieth +1800
- Byeong Hun An +2500

2023 Waste Management Phoenix Open Odds, Picks, and PGA Betting Analysis
Previous Betting News
The Waste Management Phoenix Open is one of the most unique and exciting tournaments on the PGA Tour. Rather than the reserved and quiet atmosphere players are accustomed to at courses like Augusta and Pebble Beach, the crowds at TPC Scottsdale are raucous and ready to party.
It’s one of the best weekends of the golf season, not just for the atmosphere but the quality of players it attracts. That’s even more true this year as it’s the first $20 million event of the season. It also coincides with the Super Bowl, so let’s just say it’s a great weekend for avid sports bettors.
The field at this year’s Waste Management Phoenix Open includes the top three-ranked players and six of the top seven in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). Defending champion Scottie Scheffler opens with the third-shortest golf odds (+1225) behind Rory McIlroy (+830) and Jon Rahm (+700), both of whom are at the top of their game right now which should make your PGA Tour betting more interesting.
Waste Management Phoenix Open Betting Predictions and Favorites Odds | PGA Tour Lines
Betting Favorite Jon Rahm
It should be no surprise that Rahm has the shortest odds to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The talented Spaniard already has two tournament victories (The American Express and Sentry Tournament of Champions) this season, which equals his career-best, in only five starts. He has finished top-10 in each of those events.
MyBookie lists Rahm at +1650 to lead after the first round. If you’re making this bet, you may as well take Rahm to win outright, as he’s been dynamite when he gets off to a good start. Rahm shot a first-round score of 64 in both The American Express and Sentry Tournament of Champions. He shot at least 69 in the first round of his other three events before rallying on the weekend.
Why You Should Back Xander Schauffele
Although he has yet to win this season, Xander Schauffele is coming off of a breakthrough season and hopes to build upon that this year. He has finished at least top-13 in each of his four events and was top-five at the Hero World Challenge and The American Express. Before the Farmers Insurance Open two weeks ago, Schauffele had just two rounds over 70 this season.
Schauffele finished one shot back of Scheffler and Patrick Cantlay, who went to a playoff to determine the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open. He was also one shot back of winning at TPC Scottsdale in 2021. He clearly enjoys playing here and, despite his past success, should fly under the radar with all the big names participating.
Even a $10 bet on Schauffele at +1425 could net you $142.50 in profit. The American is also paying out +2400 to lead after the first round. He’s +480 in a 72-hole betting group that involves McIlroy (+220), Rahm (+220), Scheffler (+400), and Cantlay (+600).
Outright Betting Odds
Jon Rahm +700
Rory McIlroy +830
Scottie Scheffler +1225
Xander Schauffele +1425
Collin Morikawa +1600
Tony Finau +1800
Patrick Cantlay +1900

PGA Tour 2022 Phoenix Open Odds, Preview and Analysis
Previous Betting News
The WM Phoenix Open, also known as ‘The People’s Open,’ returns to TPC Scottsdale this week in its usual spot as a lead-up to the 2022 Super Bowl. Last year the spectators were limited, but the tournament returns to full capacity this year which will enhance a tournament that is already unlike any other on the Tour’s schedule. Tournament play begins on Thursday, February 10th, and concludes on Sunday, February 13th.
Brooks Kopeka, a two-time winner here, returns to defend his title along with a handful of past winners. Koepka fired a Sunday round of six-under to best K.H. Lee and Xander Schauffele by one stroke. The victory was the 31-year old’s first win since capturing the FedEx St. Jude Invitational in 2019.
The winner of the tournament takes home $1.476 million in prize money and 500 FedEx Cup points. The total purse for the tournament is $8.2 million. That said, let’s take a look at our Golf Betting analysis for the Phoenix Open event along with their PGA Tour odds.
Golf Betting Preview for the Waste Management Phoenix Open
About TPC Scottsdale
The TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course was designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish and opened its doors in 1986, and was renovated in 2014. The par-71, 7,261-yard track has hosted the WM Phoenix Open every year since 1987. The par-3 16th hole is the only fully enclosed hole on the PGA Tour.
The final holes of the course are high risk, high reward and can provide drama for the thousands of spectators. Over the last five years, the averaging winning score has been just below 18-under.
The WM Phoenix Open Field
Six of the top 10 players in the world and 26 of the top 50 will be teeing it up this week, providing the WM Phoenix Open with one of the strongest fields in the tournament’s history. With daylight still reduced, the field will be limited to 132 players.
Highlighting the field is the world’s top-ranked player Jon Rahm and current FedEx Cup leader Hideki Matsuyama. Viktor Hovland’s jumped up to the no. 3 spot in the world after winning the Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour, his third victory in his last five tournaments. Patrick Cantlay, the no.4 ranked player in the world, tees it up for the first time at this event.
Louis Oosthuizen returns to action on Tour for the first time in almost four months. Oosthuizen’s last finish was a T38 at the CJ Cup in mid-October. Daniel Berger is back in the field after withdrawing from the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am last week with back issues.
Sponsor exemptions were handed out to some young and upcoming stars, including Sahith Theegala, Austin Eckroat, and Arizona State freshman Preston Summerhays.
WM Phoenix Betting Favorites
In any tournament Rahm is in, the odds are high that he will be the pre-tournament betting favorite. This week is no different, with Rambo sitting at +600. Following Rahm is Justin Thomas (+1000), who’s finished 13th, 3rd, 3rd, 17th over his last four starts here.
Matsuyama (+1400), Jordan Speith (+1600), Cantlay (+1600), and Hovland (+1600) round out the top players. Matsuyama is a two-time tournament winner, claiming victory in 2016 and 2017.
Other notable betting odds are last year’s champion Koepka at +3000, previous week’s champion Tom Hoge (+6500), and 2019 champion Rickie Fowler (+8000).

The Top Five Picks To Win
No. 5 Ryan Palmer
You might not hear Ryan Palmer’s name being mentioned as a potential long shot winner, but he’s my No. 5 pick to win the Phoenix Open and for good reason. The 44-year-old is 28th in the Official Golf World Rankings (OGWR). More importantly, Palmer has been mostly outstanding since the start of the 2020-21 season. In seven events, the Texas native has recorded four Top-25 finishes and three Top-10 finishes. Over his last three tournaments, Palmer finished fourth at the Sentry Tournament of Champions last month before finishing T41 a week later at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Just last week, Palmer finished T2 in the Farmers Insurance Open. Palmer ranks 49th in driving distance (303.3), 15th in eagles per hole (78.0) a spectacular third in birdie average (5.08) and 26th in scoring average (70.1). Palmer finished in a three-way tie for second place in Phoenix in 2015 while finishing in a five-way tie for second in 2006. At +4000, Palmer is offering a tremendous payout if he can bring home the bacon.
No. 4 Xander Schauffele
Sixth in the OGWR, the 27-year-old Californian ranks eight in eagles (72.0), ninth in birdie average (4.83) and sixth in scoring average (69.5). In six events this season, Schauffele has four Top-10 finishes, including a fifth place finish in the Sentry Tournament of Champions last month and a second place finish in last weekend’s Farmers Insurance Open. After recording a trio of second place finishes last season, but no wins, this dude is due for an outright win and he’s got the skills to get it done.
No. 3 Rickie Fowler
No one is really mentioning Rickie Fowler much these days, but I think the 32-year-old Californian still has plenty of gas left in the tank. In eight outings this season, Fowler only has one Top 25 finish, but he’s also ranked a solid 68th in driving distance (300.6) and 61st in birdie average (4.18). More importantly, Fowler won this event in 2019 while finishing second in 2016 and 2010. Maybe it’s me, but I think the gifted, but often underachieving Fowler is long overdue for a win.
No. 2 Webb Simpson
Ninth if the OGWR, the 35-year-old North Carolina native ranks second in driving accuracy, 29th in eagles (100.8), 23rd in birdie average (4.54) and ninth in scoring average (69.6). In seven events this season, Simpson has three Top-10 finishes, including a T4 finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii two weeks ago. Simpson won this tournament a year ago in a playoff against Tony Finau while finishing second in 2017. Simpson has been rock-solid with every shot in the bag and will definitely challenge for the win.
No. 1 Hideki Matsuyama
23rd in the Official Golf World Rankings, the 28-year-old Japanese star has recorded one Top-10 finish in nine events this season including a T2 finish in the Houston Open in November. Matsuyama finished an uninspiring T53 in the Farmers Insurance Open two weeks ago, but is my top pick to win this weekend. Matsuyama won this event in 2016 and 2017 while finishing T2 in 2015. Matsuyama is due for a win after failing to get one last season and I believe he’s getting the huge ‘W’ this coming weekend.

Which golfer has the best shot of winning the Waste Management Phoenix Open? Jon Rahm or Justin Thomas?
Last year, Jon Rahm shot a -10. Justin Thomas shot a -14. Rickie Fowler won with a -17. Based on those stats, Thomas is the better play than Rahm. But, there’s more to it than just how each performed last year.
Rahm heads to the Valley of the Sun off a second-place finish at the Farmers Insurance Open. He’s on top of his game. That could take him ahead of Thomas. Justin didn’t make the cut at the Sony Open in his last tournament played. If you’re looking to back chalk, go with JR over JT.
Which golfer among Simpson, Fowler, Schauffele, and Matsuyama, offers the fairest odds to win the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open?
Fowler is an obvious choice. He shot a -17 to take the Waste Management Phoenix Open last year. It means Rickie knows how to deal with the crowds. Heck, he thrives on the screaming, yelling, and overall obnoxiousness.
But, Rickie missed the cut at the Famers Insurance. Webb Simpson shot a -8 last year. He finished second in his last tournament played, the Sony Open. Note that after a 71 first round, Simpson shot 66-66-67 at the Sony Open. Webb’s got a big chance this week.
What are the two best golfers to consider backing at odds of +2800 to +5500?
At +2800, Matt Kuchar offers fair odds. Kuchar shot a -12 at the 2019 Phoenix Open. He missed the cut at the Sony Open, but he can bounce back this week.
The other player to consider is Branden Grace. The South African player has missed the cut in 3-of-4. He shot a -15 last year. That was 2 strokes off Fowler’s winning -17. Grace has a puncher’s chance to win, which makes his +4500 odds fair.
Check out 4 Top PGA Tournament Matchups for the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open
- Justin Thomas -140
- Webb Simpson +120
Thomas could take the trophy on Sunday. But the odds on Simpson make him the play. Webb has a real chance to win outright. All he must do is beat Thomas and this matchup cashes.
- Viktor Hovland -165
- Justin Spieth +145
Spieth is in awful form. He shot a 70-70-73-74 at the Farmers Insurance Open. But Hovland hasn’t played much better. He missed the cut at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in his last. At the odds, Spieth is the play.
- Colin Morikawa +115
- Sung-Jae Im -105
Morikawa had a nice Framers Insurance Open. He finished twenty-first and shot a couple of 69 rounds. Sung-Jae posted two rounds of 74 and a 71 round at the Farmers Insurance Open. Go with Morikawa.
- Hideki Matsuyama -115
- Xander Schauffele -105
Matsuyama finished forty-fifth last week. Schauffele missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance. Although Matsuyama is the favorite, Schauffele is the pick. He shot a -10 at the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open. So, expect a bounce-back performance this week.
2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open Odds & Prediction
Previous Betting News
On the PGA Tour, there are some tournaments that are more popular than others. The majors are always going to be the top draw, but there are others that get a lot of attention for other reasons. One of those events is the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open, and most will agree that it’s all because of the iconic 16th hole, which is known as “The Stadium Hole”. The grandstands that surround this hole make it look like a baseball field, with 16,000 fans cheering every shot at the TPC Scottsdale Course. Starting on Thursday, January 31, a total of 132 golfers will hit the course looking for a share of the $7.1 million prize pool. Let’s take a look at some of the golf betting favorites to win.
2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open Odds & Prediction
- When: Thursday 31st – February 3rd, 2019
- Location: Scottsdale, Arizona
- Established: 1932, 87 years ago
- Course: TPC Scottsdale
- Par: 71
- Tour: PGA
- Format: Stroke play
Jon Rahm
- 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open Odds: (+600)
When it comes to consistency over the past few seasons, there are few players better than Jon Rahm. Whenever the Spaniard is part of the field, he always seems to be hovering near the top of the leaderboard. The downside is that he seldom makes it all the way to the top on Sundays when it really matters.
Rahm has managed just 2 wins on the tour is his career, but he is once again, challenging for the top this season, finishing in the top 10 on 3 separate occasions. He may be the favorite at the Phoenix Open, but I would be looking elsewhere for the winner.
Justin Thomas
- 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open Odds: (+900)
This is a young man that certainly knows how to win, as he already has 9 wins on the PGA Tour at the tender age of 25. None of those wins have come this season, but Thomas has been good when he has played, landing in the top 5 twice already this year.
Thomas has made the cut in all 5 events that he has played this season, with his worst performance being a T3 6th in his second start. Another consistent player with a real shot at winning this weekend.
Hideki Matsuyama
- 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open Odds: (+1200)
Over the course of the last 10 years, the Waste Management Phoenix Open has been won by an American player on 8 separate occasions. The outsider in all of this is Matsuyama, who won the other two times, back to back in 2016 and 2017.
That said, he is going to need to improve his current form quite dramatically to get the win here, as he has but 1 top 10 finish to his name in the early part of the season. That said, his T3rd finish came at the Farmers Insurance event last weekend, so perhaps that was a sign that he is ready to break out.
Xander Schauffele
- 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open Odds: (+1400)
Trying to pick a winner in any given week on the PGA Tour is tough, but I always try to find the man on the best form before making my pick. Using that variable, you really need to take a look at Schauffele, as he has already picked up a pair of wins this season, doubling his total career victories in the process.
This young man has already surpassed the $3 million mark in earnings this season and looks set for a breakout year. I think he is the man to beat this weekend, which is why my money will be heading in his direction.

PGA Betting Preview: 2018 Waste Management Phoenix Open
Previous Betting News
“While parts of the country continue to experience cold weather, the same cannot be said for the PGA Tour players who will be heading to Arizona this week to take part in the 2018 Waste Management Phoenix Open. In total, 132 players will tackle the TPC Scottsdale course, and they will all be looking to take down Hideki Matsuyama, once again the PGA betting favorite to win the tournament.
If he pulls it off, it will be the first three-peat in the PGA in the last 7 years. Matsuyama seems to love this course, but he is going to have a solid group of players looking to snatch the title away from him. Let’s take a closer look at some of the online Golf odds favorites here, and who might end up creeping into the top 5 on the leaderboard on Sunday afternoon.

Top Contenders
Jordan Spieth
PGA Betting Odds: +750
It doesn’t seem to matter where this young man plays, he always seems to land atop the favorites board prior to the event. The question here, though, is whether he can land atop the leaderboard against a very tough group of pros. Spieth is currently ranked #3 in the world right now but is off to a little bit of a slow start to the 2018 season with just the one top 10 finish. He will eventually come around, though, but has a long way to go to match the 5 tour wins that he picked up in 2015.
Hideki Matsuyama
PGA Betting Odds: +750
Given that Matsuyama has won this event the last two years, it’s no real surprise that he is favorite to win along with Spieth. Matsuyama is coming off his best season as a pro, picking up 3 wins in 2017. He has yet to win a tournament this season, but he does have a pair of top 5 finishes this year. Matsuyama has made it all the way up to #5 in the world, thanks in large part to his play over the last year, and I like him to get the threepeat this weekend.
Jon Rahm
PGA Betting Odds: +800
Last season proved to be a breakthrough year for the Spaniard, as he went on a run at the end of 2017 where he was consistently landing in the top 10 in every tournament that he played. That form skyrocketed him up the rankings, taking him to #2 in the world.
The 2018 season has also started incredibly well for Rahm, as he already has a win on tour, winning the CareerBuilder Challenge a couple of weeks ago. Rahm is a great pick to land in the top 5 this weekend.
Rickie Fowler
PGA Betting Odds: +1300
This is an incredibly strong field, with Fowler another player currently in the top 10 in the world at #7. Fowler is another player who has made a strong start to the season, landing a pair of top 5 finishes already. It’s still very early in the season, but Fowler has already barged his way into the top 20 in the FedEx Cup standings. He is another player that should certainly be a solid top 10 bet in this event, but I think he might even crack the top 3.
If you are looking for a longshot pick this weekend, I would consider Webb Simpson (+2800). He lost to Matsuyama in a playoff last year, so look for him to take another strong run this year.
