Philadelphia vs. Miami | MLB Betting Favorites & Analysis

The current betting favorite to win the NL Cy Young Award is Miami’s Sandy Alcantara, and he will make his final start before the All-Star break on Friday against the visiting Phillies. The Marlins are favored on the MLB odds.

Why Bet on Philadelphia?

The Phillies had to play without a few guys early this week in Toronto because they were not vaccinated for COVID, including starting catcher JT Realmuto and third baseman Alec Bohm. Realmuto will be in the lineup Friday but Bohm dislocated his finger last Monday before the trip and might still be out.  The Phillies popped Bohm’s finger back into place after it happened. Bohm is batting .355 (22-for-62) with two homers, eight RBIs and a .901 OPS in his last 17 games.

“Very relieved,” Bohm said after finding out it wasn’t broken. “One-hundred percent. When you look down and you see what I saw, your mind starts to think some pretty bad things, right? I’m very relieved. … It’s all about range of motion and that type of stuff and just dealing with pain. I think time will tell. There’s no way to really know for sure, but it’s definitely a best-case scenario given the circumstances.”

The Phillies already have been playing without Bryce Harper (broken left thumb) and Jean Segura (broken right index finger). National League All-Star Kyle Schwarber has 28 home runs, which leads the National League and is second in the majors to Aaron Judge. Schwarber’s 28 home runs are tied for the second-most ever by a Phillies player before the All-Star break with Ryan Howard (28 in 2006 & 2008) and Jim Thome (28 in 2004).

It’s Kyle Gibson (4-3, 4.53 ERA) on the mound Friday. Gibson was great in a no-decision against the Cardinals last Saturday, striking out five over seven scoreless frames. The right-hander allowed just two hits in the contest — an infield single to Andrew Knizner in the third and a two-out double to Lars Nootbaar in the fifth — and did not walk a batter. Gibson generated 16 swings and misses on 84 pitches in the game — seven each on his cutter and sinker — while posting a healthy CSW of 33 percent.

Gibson is 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA in two starts this year against the Marlins.

Why Bet on Miami?

The Marlins will surely be without infielder Jon Berti for this series as he has been diagnosed with a mild left groin strain. Berti suffered the injury in Thursday’s matinee game against the Pirates while recording his MLB-best 28th stolen base of the season in the bottom of the first inning. Berti is the eighth player (13th occurrence) in club history to record 25-or-more stolen bases prior to the All-Star break.

The team already is without All-Star infielder Jazz Chisholm for the rest of the first half. He was voted to start at second base for the NL in the All-Star Game – not clear if he will be able to play, thought. Chisholm is the first-ever player born in the Bahamas to earn a spot on an MLB All-Star team. He is just the sixth player in Marlins franchise history to secure a spot on the team via fan election, joining Hanley Ramirez (2008-10), Dee Strange-Gordon (2015), Marcell Ozuna (2016-17), Gary Sheffield (1993) and Giancarlo Stanton (2015). Should he play, Chisholm become the youngest starting second baseman for either team since Roberto Alomar in 1992.

Outfielder Garrett Cooper was named an All-Star replacement but fouled a ball hard off his left leg on Tuesday night and is still dealing with a contusion on the inside of his knee. He hasn’t started since and is day-to-day. Cooper made his campaign for the All-Star Game with a red-hot June in which his .378 avg ranked first in the NL.

It’s ace and All-Star right-hander Sandy Alcantara on the mound. Alcantara received All-Star 338 votes by his player peers — most for any pitcher in the majors. He is the fifth pitcher in franchise history to earn multiple All-Star selections (also 2019), joining Kevin Brown, Dontrelle Willis, Josh Johnson, and Jose Fernandez.

Alcantara fired seven shutout innings last Sunday in a no-decision against the Mets to improve to gone 9-7 with a 1.73 ERA in 18 starts with 111 strikeouts and holding opponents to a .193 batting avg. It’s the best ERA in the National League and second-lowest in club history through the first 18 starts of a season, behind only Josh Johnson (1.70 in 2010). Over his last 12 starts since May 11, Alcantara is 7-1 with a 1.24 ERA, allowing only 57 hits and 13 earned runs over 94.2 innings during the stretch, while striking out 80.

Expert Prediction: Marlins 3, Phillies 2
