Why Bet on NY Yankees?
The Yanks come off winning two of three in Baltimore, grabbing the finale 6-0 on Sunday. Aaron Judge went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a walk in the win. Judge has nine homers and 19 RBI in 15 games against the Orioles this year. He’s opened up a seven-homer lead over Kyle Schwarber (37-30) for the major league lead.
All-Star catcher Jose Trevino went 4-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored Sunday. Trevino scored on a DJ LeMahieu double in the third inning, then sent Matt Carpenter home on a double of his own in the sixth inning. This was Trevino’s third multi-hit game this month and comes after a 3-for-21 stretch in his previous six appearances. The catcher’s four-hit performance raised his batting average from .247 to .264.
Outfielder Aaron Hicks was lifted from Sunday’s game due to cramping in his hamstring. The Yanks also recently got bad news on reliever Michael King as he will have season-ending surgery on his fractured right elbow and it’s possible that he may also need Tommy John surgery. The Yankees may have a tough time replacing him in the bullpen, as he had posted a 2.29 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 66:16 K:BB over 51 innings while picking up 16 holds, one save and three wins.
It’s lefty Jordan Montgomery on the mound here. Montgomery pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball and struck out eight last Thursday versus the Astros. The Yankees were trailing 2-1 when Montgomery left, but they went on to tie it in the ninth, leaving Montgomery with his 14th no-decision over 19 starts in what turned out to be a 3-2 loss. The eight strikeouts matched Montgomery’s season high. He’s 3-2 with a 3.24 ERA.
Montgomery has allowed 3R-or-fewer in 17 of his 19 starts this season and 2R-or-fewer in 14 of those starts. He has tossed at least 6.0IP in nine of his last 11 starts, going 3-1 with a 3.18 ERA (68.0IP, 24ER) in that stretch.
Why Bet on NY Mets?
The Mets avoided a home sweep against San Diego on Sunday with an 8-5 win. Pete Alonso went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, four RBI, two runs scored and a walk. Alonso put the Mets ahead with a three-run blast in the sixth inning, and he added an RBI double in the seventh that ended up being the game-winning hit. The slugger didn’t let the All-Star break slow him down — he’s 6-for-10 in three games since the schedule resumed. The first baseman has 25 homers, 82 RBI, 53 runs scored, two stolen bases and 17 doubles while slashing .274/.349/.534.
Edwin Diaz struck out one without allowing a baserunner in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Sunday’s win. It didn’t look like Diaz would be needed initially, but Joely Rodriguez allowed four straight batters to reach base to begin the ninth inning. Diaz would allow one inherited runner to score on a groundout, but he was able to protect the lead for his 21st save of the season. The closer extended his scoreless streak to 12 innings in 13 appearances since June 22. He’s added a 24:1 K:BB in that span, and he’s trimmed his ERA from 2.30 to 1.60.
It’s Taijuan Walker on the mound. He threw 6.0 innings of one-run ball in a no decision in his last start on July 16 vs. the Cubs. He gave up four hits and two walks with five strikeouts. It was Walker’s seventh straight quality start, tied for the longest such streak of his career (also, May 29-July 1, 2015). It’s tied for the longest active streak in the majors and is tied for the fourth-longest this season overall.
The right-hander had been dealing with soreness in his shoulder and his knee, but he got checked out before the All-Star break and has said that he’s good to go. Walker registered a terrific 2.55 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 73/25 K/BB ratio over 91 2/3 frames over 16 starts in the first half. Walker is 1-3 with a 4.06 ERA in 31 career innings vs. the Yankees.
New York is 50-5 when scoring at least four runs in a game. The Mets have won 18 consecutive games in which they’ve scored at least four runs, and are 28-1 since May 27 when scoring at least four times.
