Both the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets will have new starting quarterbacks when they meet on Sunday as the Fins will get back Tua Tagovailoa from injury and the Jets are making the surprising shift to veteran Joe Flacco. Miami is favored on the NFL odds.

Last Season
The Dolphins were 2-0 vs. the Jets in 2020. The most recent meeting was also in New Jersey, a 20-3 victory. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes while starting in place of the injured Tua Tagovailoa and the Fins kept New York out of the end zone. Fitzpatrick was 24 of 39 for 257 yards with TD throws to tight ends Mike Gesicki and Adam Shaheen. Ten Dolphins had at least one catch, including DeVante Parker leading the way with eight for 119 yards. Sam Darnold was the Jets QB then but is long gone. So is Fitzpatrick from Miami.
Why Bet on Miami?
The Dolphins won their second straight game in Week 10, a 22-10 upset of the Ravens. Fins starting Jacoby Brissett (knee) did not return after departing early in the third quarter. In relief of Brissett, Tua Tagovailoa (finger) completed 8-of-13 passes for 158 yards and rushed for a score – a fourth-quarter sneak that sealed the contest.
The 10 points scored by Baltimore was its fewest in a regular-season game since they scored nine on Oct. 7, 2018 at Cleveland. Miami finished the game with four sacks. After a five-sack performance last week vs. Houston, the Dolphins have posted back-to-back games with at least four sacks for the first time since Oct. 18 – Oct. 25, 2015 when they had six at Tennessee and four vs. Houston.
Miami’s offense generated pass plays of 64 and 52 yards, the longest plays of the season. Tagovailoa and Brissett each completed one deep pass, defined as an attempt that travels at least 20 air yards. It was the first time the Dolphins have completed two deep passes in a game since the team’s Week 1 win over the New England Patriots.
”Any time you can create explosive plays, that helps you offensively,” coach Brian Flores said Monday. “It changes field position, changes momentum in the game. So yeah, they always help. Any time you can get them — whether it’s run game, pass game, screen game, defensively, the kicking game — those chunk plays, they help you.”
Tagovailoa was supposedly too banged up to start in Week 10 but will start Sunday. Tagovailoa has dealt with multiple injuries this season, missing three games with fractured ribs. He also missed Week 9 with the finger injury. Since Week 8 of the 2020 season, when Tagovailoa made his first career start, he ranks in the bottom six in completion percentage, passing yards per game, passing yards per attempt, TD-to-INT ratio and passer rating among 26 QBs with 10-plus starts in that span.
Rookie WR Jaylen Waddle is just 29 catches away from breaking the Dolphins rookie record for receptions in a single season. With 388 more receiving yards, Waddle will eclipse Chris Chambers’ rookie franchise mark (833). He’s also earned Pro Football Focus’ highest grade of all rookie wideouts since Week 6.
Why Bet on New York Jets?
New York was blown out 45-17 at home by Buffalo last Sunday. With rookie QB Zach Wilson still out, backup Mike White completed 24-of-44 passes for 251 yards, zero touchdowns and four interceptions. White got fully exposed by one of the best defenses in the league, with four interceptions arguably being a good outcome. He probably could have had five or six.
Top wideout Corey Davis caught 5-of-7 targets for 93 yards. Active for the first time since Week 7, Davis (hip) had a decent statistical day but lost a fumble with 0:26 remaining in the second quarter. Michael Carter rushed 16 times for 39 yards and a touchdown and had four receptions for 43 additional yards.
The Jets have allowed 175 points over the last four games (1-3), which is the second-most in a four-game span by any team since 1970. The Patriots (54), Colts (45) and Bills (45) made the Jets the first team since the 1966 Giants to give up at least 45 points three times over four games.
With White looking terrible last time out and Wilson still hurt, veteran Joe Flacco will start this game. Explaining the move, Coach Robert Saleh said he wanted Flacco, 36, to face the Dolphins because his “calm and experience” would help the offense against Miami’s blitz-heavy defense.
“Joe’s got a history,” Saleh said. “He’s in the record books all over the place. He’s a world champion, so he’s got a history of playing good ball. One drive didn’t solidify anything; it’s his history more than anything. He’s seen these type of defenses many times over.
The Jets are giving Flacco his first start since Nov. 22, 2020, when he replaced the injured Sam Darnold. Flacco, obtained in an Oct. 27 trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, saw his first 2021 action last Sunday in a mop-up role. He completed three passes, including a touchdown, in the loss to the Bills.
Flacco appeared in five games for the Jets last season, throwing for 864 yards with 6 TDs and 3 INTs. Flacco ranks in the top seven among all active QBs in passing yards (40,978) and touchdowns (225). The Jets have played four quarterbacks during their first nine games — Josh Johnson threw for 317 yards and 3 TDs against the Colts on Nov. 4. White will return to his backup role this weekend.
