This coming Thursday, April 28, will see the start of the 2022 NFL Draft. This is where poor teams go to rebuild, while the good teams look to fill holes that may have appeared with offseason moves. What you do have to say about this draft is that it’s perhaps a little less predictable than previous years, mostly because it’s a pretty thin year for QBs coming out of college. What we could well see is a few teams making bold moves to get the man they want, so the first-round picks are going to be a lot of fun to watch. Let’s take a look at some of the bold moves that we could potentially see on Thursday night so you can make your bets against the NFL Draft Odds.
2022 Draft: Bold Moves That Could Change the NFL Odds
One of the biggest headlines of this offseason was the passing of QB Dwayne Haskins at just 24 years of age. It was a tragic story, and while everyone on the Steelers has sympathy for the Haskins family, they still need to take care of business, which means adding another QB to the fold. In order to get the man they want, they are going to need to trade up, which is something we rarely see Pittsburgh do. The feeling now is that while they showed some interest in Malik Willis, they are more likely to trade up to get Kenny Pickett.
One of the downsides of success is that the best teams do not get to pick until late in Round 1. That means that moves need to be made to fill glaring holes. If that is indeed the case, then look for the Kansas City Chiefs to make a move to a get a wide receiver. They have a massive hole to fill on the offensive side of the football after seeing Tyreek Hill move on in the offseason. I’d be very surprised if the Chiefs did not make a move.
Given that we are not looking at a deep draft in terms of quarterbacks, we can expect some teams to consider making a trade to land a starter. We all know that Baker Mayfield is going to end up somewhere other than Cleveland, but the rumor mill suggests that Jimmy Garoppolo might also still be on his way out of the San Francisco 49ers. Where these guys end up remains to be seen, with the decision very likely driven by seeing the moves that other teams make to get their hands on Willis or Pickett.
The feeling is that the first round in 2022 is going see more defensive players picked than offensive players. Another team that might make a move to get a critical defensive piece is the Buffalo Bills. Specifically, they are looking for help at the CB spot after somehow losing to the Chiefs in the playoffs last season despite having the lead with just 13 seconds on the clock. The Bills have made some moves to improve their cornerback situation, but I don’t believe they are done. Look for them to make a move in Round 1 of the NFL Draft.
