The Arizona Cardinals are projected as the worst team in the NFL this season but they nearly won in Week 1, while the New York Giants, a 2022 playoff team, were obliterated in their opener. One team tries to avoid 0-2 on Sunday in the desert with the Giants as solid favorites on the NFL odds.

Last Meeting
The teams last met in Week 14 of the 2020 season at the Giants, who lost 26-7. Hasson Reddick had a franchise-record five sacks and three forced fumbles for Arizona, although he’s now elsewhere. Kyler Murray went 24 of 35 for 244 yards and a touchdown but is out injured this year. Current Giants QB Daniel Jones finished 11 of 21 for 127 yards and two fumbles, including one lost on the opening series. He was sacked six times.
Why Bet on New York?
No team looked worse in Week 1 than the Giants as they were slaughtered 40-0 at home by Dallas. Noah Igbinoghene returned a blocked field goal 58 yards for a touchdown on the opening series and DaRon Bland scored on a pick-6 later in the first quarter and the rout was on. The Giants’ shutout loss was the largest between the teams, topping the Cowboys’ 35-0 win in 1995, also in a season-opener in the Meadowlands. It was also the Cowboys’ biggest shutout victory in any game.
Playing for the first time since landing a big new contract, QB Daniel Jones completed 15 of 28 pass attempts for 104 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing for 43 yards on 13 attempts. It was arguably his worst game as pro. Coach Brian Daboll tried to let Jones get things going in the second half, but things didn’t improve, and he was forced to bring in Tyrod Taylor in garbage time.
In his last nine games following a loss, Jones has completed 69.8 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns, zero interceptions and a 100.5 passer rating, along with four scores on the ground. The Giants have gone 7-1-1 in those nine contests.
RB Saquon Barkley rushed 12 times for 51 yards and had 12 yards on three receptions. Barkley had 63 yards on a night the New York offense gained just 218 yards from scrimmage, good for a 30 percent team yardage share. Barkley’s lone mistake led to a DaRon Bland interception after a very catchable ball bounced off his hands and into the waiting arms of Bland, which he would return for a TD.
New York’s offensive line was a disaster all night. The right side in particular struggled, with guard Mark Glowinski and tackle Evan Neal posting pass block win rates of 75.8% and 70.6%, respectively. They were among the worst at their positions in Week 1 — Neal 59th of 60 qualifying tackles and Glowinski 56th of 58 guards. The G-Men may have to play Sunday without standout left tackle Andrew Thomas, who is day-to-day with a hamstring injury. That would likely put Matt Peart or Joshua Ezeudu to protect Jones’ blindside.
Tight end Darren Waller is dealing with his own hamstring but expected to play. Waller played just 38 of the 70 snaps on offense in his Giants debut and three catches for 36 yards but didn’t play much because of the score. Waller was plagued by hamstring issues the past two seasons with the Raiders and revealed last week he has an issue with a nerve in the hamstring.
The Cardinals traded former first-round pick Isaiah Simmons to the Giants for a seventh-round pick a few weeks ago, a move that the linebacker admitted took him by surprise. Simmons was on the field for just 15 defensive snaps (26 percent) and seven special teams snaps in his Giants debut last week.
“I think his role is going to expand, because he’s that good of a player and he’s just learning the package,” defensive coordinator Wink Martindale said Thursday. “What is this, the third week he’s been here? It’s just going to keep expanding.”

Why Bet on Arizona?
Arizona is considered by most the worst team in the NFL but played solid football in Week 1, losing 20-16 at Washington. Cards QB Joshua Dobbs, who was acquired from Cleveland in late August, Dobbs completed 21 of 30 passes for 132 yards without a TD or pick, while carrying three times for minus-3 yards and recording three fumbles (two lost). He will start again with Kyler Murray (knee), who is currently on the reserve/PUP list through at least Week 4.
That Cards offense struggled on third down — going 4-for-14 — and to sustain drives. They allowed three sacks and 11 tackles for loss. Washington generated 11 total pressures against the Cardinals, according to Pro Football Focus. Last season, Arizona was tied for 23rd in the league with 46 sacks allowed.
To first-year head coach Jonathan Gannon, improvement means getting the ball to the right receivers, cutting down on penalties (the offense had five of the team’s nine penalties for 122 yards), finding the checkdown and getting the offense lined up correctly.
No. 1 running back James Conner easily paced the Cardinals backfield in the opener, handling 84 percent (52 of 62) of the offensive snaps and turning 19 touches into 70 yards from scrimmage and no touchdowns. Conner is dealing with a minor injury but should play. If not, Keaontay Ingram would take over as the featured back, something he has never done.
Arizona boasts a talented tight end duo in Zach Ertz and Trey McBride. The veteran Ertz made his return to the field in the season opener after suffering a season-ending knee injury in Week 10. The 32-year-old was targeted a team-high 10 times, five more than any other pass-catcher, but turned it into six receptions for just 21 yards. Meanwhile, McBride, the second-year tight end out of Colorado State, caught both of his targets for 23 yards.
The Cardinals will play their base defense often (ninth-most in the league) and that will likely repeat itself this week, given the Giants frequent use of at least two tight ends (46.2%), which ranked third in the NFL. Despite not giving extra help in the Week 1 loss, the Cardinals’ front did not allow a rush of 10+ yards. They also only managed two tackles for loss or no gain.
One of the Giants’ strengths last season was the ability to protect the football. They turned it over just 16 times, the second-lowest mark in the league. The success in that department did not carry over to the start of 2023. On top of the two interceptions, the Giants also fumbled the ball five times on Sunday, one of which was lost. The Cardinals forced three turnovers in their Week 1 loss to Washington, including two from Commanders quarterback Sam Howell (one interception, one fumble). Washington running back Antonio Gibson also lost a fumble.
