Jaguars vs Dolphins 2019 NFL Preseason Week 3 Odds & Betting Pick

Arguably no team has looked worse this NFL preseason than the Jacksonville Jaguars, and they may or may not finally see the debut of starting quarterback Nick Foles on Thursday night when the Jags head south in the Sunshine State to face the Dolphins, who are slight NFL Betting favorites.

The clubs haven’t met in the preseason in a handful of years did play in Week 16 last regular season and Jacksonville won 17-7 in Miami. Jags QB Blake Bortles came off the bench late in the third quarter and provided a spark. Bortles took the Jaguars 51 yards for a short field goal and 10-7 lead early in the fourth quarter.

On the next series, Telvin Smith Sr. intercepted Ryan Tannehill and scored on a 33-yard return to seal the Jaguars’ victory. Bortles is now with the Rams. Calais Campbell was dominant on defense with a forced and recovered fumble, a sack, two tackles for a loss and three quarterback hurries. Tannehill went 15 of 22 for 146 yards with one touchdown. He’s now with the Titans.

Why Bet on Jacksonville?

The Jags can’t possibly play much worse than they have thus far in losing both preseason games and not even totaling 400 yards of offense combined. They were 24-10 home losers to the Eagles last week. The Jaguars sat 31 guys, including quarterback Nick Foles, cornerback Jalen Ramsey, running back Leonard Fournette, linebacker Myles Jack and defensive ends Yannick Ngakoue and Calais Campbell.

Rookie QB Gardner Minshew started in place of Nick Foles for the second straight week and looked better than his debut in Baltimore. Minshew, who threw for 46 yards in a 29-0 loss to the Ravens, completed 19 of 29 passes for 202 yards. He tightened his grip on the backup job.

Jaguars coach Doug Marrone suggested fifth-round running back Ryquell Armstead (concussion) could play in Thursday’s preseason game against the Dolphins. Armstead is in the final stages of the concussion protocol. The rookie may struggle for a meaningful early-season role after missing so much practice time this summer. No. 2 tailback Alfred Blue (ankle) is in a walking boot and won’t play in Thursday’s preseason game against Miami.

It’s not yet clear if Foles will make his Jaguars debut this week. Marrone has said he plans to play his starters but only Foles is the first-team offensive line is all healthy. The line dealt with injuries to three projected starters left tackle Cam Robinson, left guard Andrew Norwell and right tackle Jawaan Taylor – in recent weeks, and has worked together for the first time the past two days.

Foles said while he has gone through a preseason without playing as recently as 2017, he would prefer to play before the regular season.

“If you have a chance to play, to go out there and get a few plays, it’s always great to get that game feel, that game preparation,” Foles said. “Based on what coach decides, it would be good for us.”

Why Bet on Miami?

The Fins (1-1) lost 16-14 in Tampa last week. Josh Rosen completed 10-of-18 passes for 102 scoreless yards. He was sacked three times for a loss of 15 yards. Rosen drew the start and played the first 30 minutes before passing the baton to veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick in the second half.

First-year head coach Brian Flores is giving Rosen a legitimate shot to win the starting role but Rosen didn’t really do much in the loss. It wasn’t all Rosen’s fault as the 2018 first-rounder spent much of the evening running for his life behind a porous Miami offensive line. Fitzpatrick, who spent the previous two seasons with Tampa Bay, entered to start the second half and completed 3 of 9 passes for 20 yards before being replaced by Jake Rudock five minutes into the fourth quarter. Fitzpatrick will start Thursday but Dolphins coach Brian Flores said Fitzpatrick isn’t a lock to start Week 1 of the regular season. The job is still very much up for grabs.

Jaguars vs Dolphins should be an easy victory for Miami.

Flores said that his decision won’t necessarily be made after the preseason game against Jacksonville and he’s not necessarily going to stick with one starter the entire season.

Receiver Albert Wilson (hip) is uncertain for Thursday’s preseason game against Jacksonville. Wilson was well on his way to a productive 2018 season before suffering a serious hip injury in Week 7 vs Detroit. Wilson had caught 26 passes for 391 yards and four touchdowns before getting injured. This type of production all season would have put him on pace for 60 receptions, 893 yards, and nine touchdowns.

The Dolphins have kept the same first-team offensive line since the early days of training camp, and it should stay that way. Flores said Monday he has liked what he has seen from the unit of Laremy Tunsil at left tackle, rookie Michael Deiter at left guard, Daniel Kilgore at center, rookie Shaq Calhoun at right guard and Jesse Davis at right tackle. Deiter and Calhoun moved to the first-team unit and Davis slid over from right guard to right tackle after the first four practices of camp, the move coinciding with Dave DeGuglielmo replacing Pat Flaherty as offensive line coach.
