One of the most amazing streaks currently active in the NFL is the 16 straight winning seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers by Coach Mike Tomlin.
Will that trend continue in 2023? Might be tough as the Steelers probably have the least talented overall roster in the AFC North.
Check out an in-depth look at Pittsburgh’s offense this season as well as how their offense may affect NFL betting odds.

Pittsburgh Last Season
Pittsburgh was 3-7 at one point last season so it was a minor miracle that the team finished 9-8 as it won its final four games to extend Tomlin’s streak. His 16 consecutive winning seasons have tied George Halas for the third-longest streak of seasons finishing .500 or better by a head coach in NFL history. That said, it’s been 14 years since this proud franchise hoisted the Lombardi Trophy and a dozen years since the Steelers reached the Super Bowl. Some think this could be Tomlin’s final season but many thought that last year, too.
Pittsburgh’s Quarterback
The only QB taken in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft was Kenny Pickett by the Steelers out of the University of Pittsburgh. Pickett had his moments as a rookie and is clearly the No. 1 guy entering this year after Mitch Trubisky opened 2022 as the starter – he’s now the No. 2.
Pickett played in 13 games as a rookie and started 12, going 7-5. He completed 245-of-389 passes (63.0 percent) for 2,404 yards, seven touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 76.7 while rushing 55 times for 237 yards and three TDs. Pickett set rookie quarterback franchise records in completions and attempts, and ranked second in passing yards, completion percentage, passing TDs and victories.
In his final eight games, Pickett threw just one interception. He’s not a finished product, but he showed enough promise as a rookie to suggest he could make a big jump in Year 2. The Steelers suffered one loss over the final seven weeks of the season: a 16-14 setback vs. the rival Ravens in Week 14 when Pickett was knocked out by a concussion in the first quarter of that game, with Trubisky coming in to throw three interceptions in relief.
Pickett has a talented running mate in fellow 2022 rookie receiver George Pickens, and the Steelers left no stone unturned in the offseason, adding a veteran receiver in Allen Robinson and drafting Georgia tight end Darnell Washington. Pickens looks like a future star as the 2022 second-round pick played in every game last year and started 12. He ranked third on the team in receptions (52), second in receiving yards (801) and first in receiving touchdowns (four). Pickens was second in the NFL among rookies in yards per reception (15.4; min. 25 receptions), tied for third in receiving touchdowns and fourth in receptions and receiving yards.
Pittsburgh Offense and Defense this Season
Pittsburgh did a pick swap with the Rams to land Robinson. After consecutive 1,100-plus-yard seasons in 2019 and 2020, Robinson has recorded a combined 749 yards and four receiving touchdowns between 2021 and 2022. In Los Angeles last year, he posted his lowest receiving total in a season since his one game played in 2017 with 339 yards in 10 games.
The Steelers also hope they have upgraded the offensive line by signing guards Isaac Seumalo and Nate Herbig, and adding right tackle Le’Raven Clark for depth in free agency. In addition, the team took Georgia offensive tackle Broderick Jones at No. 14 overall in the draft. Though the Steelers’ offensive line was one of the most improved units by the end of last season, Steelers tackles are 26th in the NFL in pass block win rate over the past two seasons.
There was some talk that Tomlin might fire offensive coordinator Matt Canada, but he kept Canada in the belief that the continuity will help Pickett’s development. Canada has made a few changes after Pittsburgh’s scoring offense was No. 26 in the NFL last season averaging only 18.8 points per game.
“I’m not going to say we’re revolutionizing our offense and everything is changing, but there are some new things that can make us a lot better,” third-string QB Mason Rudolph said.
On defense, the Steelers still have one of the league’s best pass-rushers in 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year TJ Watt. After tying the NFL record with 22.5 sacks that year, he was limited to 10 games and 5.5 sacks last year due to injury.
2023 NFL Draft Pick
The Steelers bolstered their secondary in Round 2 of the draft by selecting Penn State’s Joey Porter Jr. His dad Joey Porter Sr., an outside linebacker and prolific trash-talker, was drafted in the third round of the 1999 draft by the Steelers and spent seven seasons with the team. Named first-team All Pro twice, Porter Sr. was also part of the team that won Super Bowl XL.
Pittsburgh Steelers Week 1 Game | Marquee Matchups
One of the marquee matchups of Week 1 is San Francisco at Pittsburgh as the Steelers open the season at home for the first time since 2014, and only the 10th time since Acrisure Stadium opened in 2001. The Niners are currently -3. The Steelers will have an early bye week this year as it falls on Week 6 of the season, setting them up for a long stretch of 12 straight games, which includes four AFC North matchups. The regular season will wrap on the road against the Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium in Week 18.
