When the Kansas City Chiefs jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half of Sunday’s AFC Championship game, many felt that it was a foregone conclusion that the Chiefs would be heading to SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles to the Super Bowl.
Well, Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals had something to say about that. The Bengals defense held the Chiefs scoreless in the second half until the end of regulation when Harrison Butker kicked a last-second field goal to send the game into overtime.
The Chiefs won the coin toss, but Patrick Mahomes threw an interception, which led to a game-winning field goal by the Bengals, sending them to the Super Bowl. Check out updated odds to win the Super Bowl for the Bengals as well as an odds analysis so you can make your bets against the Super Bowl odds.
Odds On AFC Team Winning the Super Bowl
Bengals’ miracle run
The Bengals’ improbable run to the AFC Championship is a great story. Even though the Bengals will be the home team in the Super Bowl, they’ll be playing at SoFi Stadium, which is the home field of the Los Angeles Rams.
This may have played into the oddsmakers making the Bengals a four-point underdog in the Super Bowl. Everyone loves the Cinderella story in sports, and the Bengals have now become that.
Joe Burrow has become a player that people love to root for, and the underdog Bengals have quickly become a team that people are rallying around.
One area of concern for the Bengals will be their offensive line. In their game against Tennessee, Burrow was sacked nine times. Even though the Bengals line cleaned things up in Sunday’s game against the Chiefs, the Rams have a very good line that could give them fits. Aaron Donald is arguably the best defensive lineman in the game.
When the Rams game was tight late, Donald made some huge plays and forced Jimmy Garoppolo into making some bad decisions. Von Miller will also be a factor in the Super Bowl. The pass-rushing specialist will be a handful for the Bengals’ offensive line.
While many thought that the Bengals’ defense could also be one of their downfalls, that was proven otherwise in Sunday’s game. After giving up 21 quick points, the defense hunkered down and limited the Chiefs to just three points in the second half and overtime. We’ll see if they can duplicate their second-half effort against a very good and versatile Rams offense.
Bengals once again coming in as the underdogs
Burrow and the Bengals have been the underdogs in their last two games, and this one will be no different. They have shown a penchant for overcoming the odds and stepping up big in huge situations. Even though we’re not sure of the status of tight-end CJ Uzomah, who left the AFC title game with an injury, the Bengals still have a loaded arsenal of weapons.
Between Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd, the Bengals have one of the best trios of receivers in the league. Combine them with the running of Joe Mixon, and you have a very formidable offense.
This one should be a fun game to watch. We should see a lot of points scored. The world will be watching to see if Joe Burrow can once again overcome the odds and lead his team to an improbable Super Bowl victory.
