PGA Tour 2021 Ryder Cup Betting Odds & Analysis

The teams are set for the 43rd Ryder Cup taking place on September 24th through the 26th at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin. Originally scheduled for 2020, the tournament between Team USA and Team Europe was postponed due to the ongoing global pandemic.

Team Europe is the reigning champion and winner of seven of the last nine events. The European’s won 17 ½ to 10 ½ at Le Golf National in France in 2018. Team USA down the European’s, 17-11, the last time the matches were held in the United States in 2016. Let’s take a closer look at the rapidly approaching event so you can get ready to bet against their PGA Tour odds.

Format

The Ryder Cup is three days of match play events with 28 points awarded to the winner of each event. A team needs 14 ½ points to claim the title, or 14 points for the defending champion to reclaim the cup.

On Friday, the first day of play, four pairs play alternate shot, and four pairs play better ball. The second day features additional rounds of foursome matches and fourball matches. Sunday showcases 12 singles matches.

Team USA

Team USA will be under the direction of captain Steve Stricker and vice-captains Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson, Davis Love III, Phil Mickelson, and Fred Couples. The 12-player team will have six players playing in their first Ryder Cup. Six players automatically qualify through the Ryder Cup points list, and six additional players are selected by Stricker.

The six automatic qualifiers are Colin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, and Patrick Cantlay. This will be Morikawa and Cantlay’s first Ryder Cup experience.

Stickler’s six captains’ selections went to Tony Finau, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Harris English, Daniel Berger, and Scottie Scheffler. All the captain’s picks but Finau and Spieth will be making their first appearance in the team event.

Team Europe

Padraig Harrington was named captain of the European team along with vice-captains Robert Karlsson, Luke Donald, Martin Kaymer, and Graeme McDowell. The European team consists of nine automatic qualifiers and three captain’s selections. Only three of the 12 Euros are rookies on the event.

Headlining the automatic qualifiers include Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Bernd Wiesberger, Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Paul Casey, Matthew Fitzpatrick, and Lee Westwood. Wiesberger and Hovland are the only first-timers of the nine players.

With 75% of the team already set, Harrington didn’t have difficulty selecting the three remaining spots. Those positions went to veteran Ryder Cup participants Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter and rookie Shane Lowry.

Betting Odds

The odds have shifted in the United States’ favor since the finalization of the European squad. Even after the manhandling Team USA was dealt with three years ago, the Americans are the betting favorite at -200. A victory for the United States would be their third in four tries on home soil.

If you believe the Europeans will again defeat the Americans, you can grab Europe at +185. Europe might not have the stars top-to-bottom like the Americans, but the Euros will have a solid group with excellent team chemistry.

You can also pick both teams to tie at +1100. The Ryder Cup has tied just twice in its history, the last in 1989.
