The top PGA Tour players take their talents to Mexico for the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba this week. The golf tournament is now in its 15th season and has become a favorite stop for many of the Tour’s top players. Mayakoba is one of the final events of the 2021 calendar, marking an important tournament for players trying to accumulate as many FedEx points as possible before the holiday break. With that in mind, it’s time we take a closer look at the upcoming World Wide Technology Championship tournament so you can bet against the PGA Tour odds.
PGA Tour Betting – World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba Preview
Overview
The tournament is held in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and played at El Camaleon Golf Course. Players tee off beginning Thursday, November 4th, and conclude the event on Sunday, November 7th.Victor Hovland returns to defend his title after besting Aaron Wise by one stroke in 2020. Hovland’s birdie on the final hole locked up his second PGA Tour victory of the 24-year olds career.
Originally an opposite-field event, Mayakoba is now a standalone event with the winner receiving a full 500 FedEx Cup points and a $1.296 million share of the $7.2 million purse.
El Camaleon Golf Course
El Camaleon Golf Course was designed by Greg Norman and plays as a par-71 at approximately 7,017 yards. The course boasts unique landscapes around the property, stretching through a tropical jungle and along the oceanfront.
If you want to win the tournament you are going to need to be ready to score low. The average winning score over the last five tournaments has hovered around 20-under. Matt Kucher’s 2018 victory set the low-score record with a 22-under, 264 score.
World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba Field
The Mayakoba field has gotten considerably stronger over the years and this season it’ll showcase its strongest field yet. There will be 11 Ryder Cup players in the event as well as four assistant captains. For many of the world’s top golfers, this will be the last time you see them in action until 2022.
Justin Thomas highlights the field as the top-ranked player and lone player ranked in the top-10, teeing it up. Other notable American golfers in the event include Brooks Koepka, Tony Finau, and Scottie Scheffler. The seven recent winners at Mayakoba will be aiming for their chance at a second title.
Abraham Ancer leads a group of Mexican golfers aiming to win the event in his home country. The tournament allocates four sponsorship exemptions to Spanish or Mexican heritage players from Latin America, South America, Spain, or Mexico.
The Targets
The pre-tournament favorite is Thomas (+1200), according to mybookie.ag. Most books will agree that Thomas has the best chance to win this event for the first time. Hovland (+1800) is behind Thomas, looking to become the first two-time winner of the tournament.
Two of our favorites coming into the event are Finau (+2200) and Ancer (+2500). Finau got his second PGA Tour victory at the Northern Trust and played consistent golf all year. Ancer became a PGA winner earlier this year and took home a T12 here in 2020.
Some of the players to target down the board are Shane Lowry (+3500), Maverick McNealy (+5500), and Jhonattan Vegas (+7500). All three golfers have played consistently this year and are due for a victory.
