Detroit Lions Analysis

The Lions come off a 34-17 win in Chicago in Week 16 to inch closer to the NFC North title and the conference’s top seed – which the franchise has never had. Jared Goff continued his MVP-caliber season in the win by completing 23 of 32 passes for 336 yards and three touchdowns. Goff now has a career-high 33 TD passes, second-most in Lions history. Goff has thrown for 830 yards and eight touchdowns across his last two starts and is the first player in NFL history with at least 275 passing yards, two touchdown passes and a passer rating of 135-or-higher in five games within a single season in NFL history.

Jared Goff

Goff has 41 career games with at least 300 passing yards, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino (41 games) and Matt Ryan (41) for the second-most games with at least 300 passing yards by a quarterback in his first nine seasons in NFL history. Only Patrick Mahomes (47 games, in first eight seasons) has more.

Amon-St. Brown

Star wideout St. Brown caught six of eight targets for 70 yards and a touchdown, his career high 11th TD. St. Brown, who has 101 receptions this season and had 119 receptions in 2023 and 106 receptions in 2022, is the third player in NFL history with 100 receptions in three of his first four seasons, joining Brandon Marshall and Michael Thomas.

Amon is looking for revenge after Detroit blew a 17-point halftime lead in last season’s NFC title game and missed its first Super Bowl appearance. He described it as being “like a horror movie” and one of the worst losses of his entire life. “I feel like each player that was here last year knows the feeling that we had last year and we want to go in there and hopefully come out with a W,” St. Brown said.

Sam LaPorta

Tight end LaPorta had a TD catch in Chicago. LaPorta has 16 career touchdown receptions, tied with Jimmy Graham (16 touchdown receptions) for the third-most touchdown receptions by a tight end in his first two seasons in NFL history. Only Rob Gronkowski (27 touchdown receptions) and Hall of Famer Mike Ditka (17) have more.

The Lions are 7-0 on the road, which is their longest road win streak in franchise history. They’ve lost 14 consecutive road games to the 49ers, though, including the playoffs. The Lions are 9-2 outright and 8-3 ATS in prime-time games under coach Dan Campbell.

The Lions have won three games by 35+ points this year, establishing a new team record for the most wins by 35+ points in a season. Detroit is the 10th team in NFL history to produce at least 490 points scored and have a point differential of at least 190 through the first 15 games of a season.

Scored Points

They have eight 30-point games, tied for the second-most in a season in team history, and have logged 20-plus points in 14 games, which ties for the most in a season in franchise history. The Lions are only the fifth team in NFL history to produce at least 13 wins, 6,000 total net yards and 60 touchdowns through the first 15 games of a season.

San Francisco 49ers Analysis

A lot has changed for the 49ers since these teams last met. The Lions have continued to ascend, while the Niners have taken a significant step back. Since 2000, this will be the ninth time the teams that met in a conference championship game will play again the following season. The home team won seven of the eight previous times.

Brock Purdy

The Niners were eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16 and then lost in Miami, 29-17. Brock Purdy completed 26 of 40 pass attempts for 313 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while adding 26 rushing yards on four attempts. An ugly interception in the fourth quarter killed any hopes for San Francisco to make a comeback. Purdy is averaging 12.77 yards per completion this season, the 4th-most in the NFL. Out of 154 possible drives this year, the 49ers offense has gone three-and-out 24 times for a three-and-out percentage of 15.6%, which is the 5th-lowest rate in the NFL.

George Kittle

Tight end George Kittle registered eight receptions for 106 yards against Miami. He now has 7,241 receiving yards in his career, surpassing former New England Patriots Tight end Rob Gronkowski for the second-most receiving yards by a tight end in their first eight seasons in NFL history. With 106 receiving yards on the day, Kittle registered his third game this season with 100-or-more receiving yards and now has 20 career games with 100-or-more receiving yards. Those make him one of four tight ends in NFL history to register 20 such games in the first eight seasons of their career.

Fred Warner

Linebacker Fred Warner registered 11 tackles vs. the Dolphins. He now has 117 tackles on the season and joins Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith as the only players since at least 2000 to register 115-or-more tackles in each of their first seven NFL seasons.

The Injuries

San Francisco has been crushed by injuries this year and that continued. Guard Aaron Banks suffered a season-ending injury against the Fins as did linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who barely played this year as it was. Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams hasn’t played for weeks and won’t return. Williams had been working to get back in 2024 but has not been able to make enough forward progress with his ankle injury since coming out hurt from the team’s Week 11 matchup versus the Seahawks. Fourth-string RB Isaac Guerendo, now the starter due to other injuries at the position, is considered day-to-day with his hamstring but is “trending in the right direction.”

The Ofensive

The 49ers offense has gained 5,486 total net yards, while the 49ers defense has allowed 4,564 total net yards. The team’s +922 total net yards differential is the 4th-highest in the NFL. Cornerback Renardo Green has registered 9 passes defensed, tied for the 7th-most among rookies in the NFL and tied for the 3rd-most among rookies in the NFC entering Week 17. The 49ers defense is holding its opponents to 6.6 yards per pass attempts this season, the 3rd-fewest in the NFL.

Lions vs 49ers Series History

San Francisco leads all-time 40-28-1 which includes three playoff meetings. Last January in the NFC title game also at Levi’s Stadium, the Lions were up 24-7 in the third quarter and appeared headed to their first-ever Super Bowl – the only NFC team to never make it – but the Niners rallied for a 34-31 win. San Francisco mounted the fourth comeback ever from 17 points down or more in a conference title game thanks to some big plays by QB Brock Purdy and bad mistakes from the Lions, including two failed fourth downs in field-goal range.

49ers vs Lions
With their playoff hopes completely vanquished, the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions don’t have much to play for when they square off in their Week 16 matchup at 1:00 PM ET, on Sunday, live from Ford Field. Having said that, this contest is still offering a bunch of value for NFL bettors that are looking to boost the annual betting bankroll before the end of the regular season. Now, let’s find out which one of these teams will beat the odds.

49ers vs Lions Football Odds & Betting Pick

The NFL Week 16 betting odds for this contest have the visiting Niners as 9-point underdogs to beat the Lions. If you want to bet the O/U the game total is sitting at 43.

Why Bet The San Francisco 49ers Odds at +9

Because they’ve still got talent on both sides of the ball. San Francisco (4-10 SU, 6-8 ATS) has lost two straight and four of five including their 24-14 loss against Cincinnati last weekend as a 7-point home underdog. Now, the Niners are simply looking to close out their 2015 campaign in what has been a completely lost season. San Francisco lost last week in front of a virtually empty stadium after having their once nationally-televised matchup moved from prime time to mid-afternoon. “I don’t blame them,” veteran 49ers wideout Torrey Smith said of the lack of fans. “It’s not fun to watch right now.” San Francisco has been held to 14 points or less four times in their last five outings and are reportedly campaigning to keep head coach Jim Tomsula next season, although I’m not sure why. “The fans are probably fed up,” Pro Bowl linebacker NaVorro Bowman said. “If we were winning, they would have stayed.”

Why Bet The Detroit Lions Odds at -9

Because they’re playing their best football of the season right now! Who knew….that a guy named ‘Jim Bob’ would be the answer to all of Detroit’s (5-9 SU, 5-9 ATS) problems this season? Well, it’s true. The Detroit Lions – and more importantly – quarterback Matthew Stafford – have looked and played like a completely different team than the pre-J.B.C. team that the Lions are right now. Since Cooter took over, Detroit has gone 4-2, including their last-second loss to the Green Bay Packers on a Hail Mary. Stafford has strung together four straight games where he’s completed at least 65 percent of his passes. Along the way, Stafford has thrown 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions. “The way he communicates with us — he’s a fun guy, a younger guy to be around,” Calvin Johnson told The Detroit News on Monday. “And he’s getting better and better every game.”

Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction

While I like the Detroit Lions to get the win in this home contest against a mediocre 49ers team, I don’t like them to cover the nearly double-digit point spread and believe the 38 percent of public bettor that like Frisco are right on the mark. While the Niners have gone 6-13-1 ATS in their last 20 games overall, Blaine Gabbert and company are also 5-2 ATS in their last seven games following a straight up loss. Despite their improved play recently, the Lions are just 4-9 ATS in their last 13 home games against a team with a losing road record, 2-6 ATS in their last eight home games and an identical 2-6 ATS in their last eight games following a straight up win. The Lions get the ‘W but the ATS cover goes to the Niners. My final score prediction is Detroit 27 San Francisco 20
