We are barely into the New Year, but it’s already time for one of the biggest tournaments on the tennis calendar, as the Australian Open gets underway on Monday, January 14. We will be taking a look at both the men’s and women’s tournaments over the next couple of weeks, starting by looking at the players who are likely to be competing for the first Grand Slam event of the season.
We are going to get the ball rolling with the men, and we have to say that it’s the usual cast of characters who are in as the tennis betting favorites for this one. Let’s get right to it.
2019 Australian Open Betting Preview – Men’s Draw
- 2019 Australian Open Betting Odds to Win: +115
The Serbian is the clear favorite here as he goes in search of his 6th Australian Open title. Last year was a bit of an up and down one for Djokovic, as he struggled to get back to full strength after struggling with injuries. That should not be the case here, though, as he will be coming in fresh and ready to go.
Djokovic ended last year in top form, so expect him to make a deep run in Melbourne, which should begin with little more than a workout against Mitchell Kreuger in the opening round. He could have a tougher second round ahead of him if Jo Wilfred Tsonga can get the win we expect in the first round. Djokovic looks set to at least get to the semi-final.
- 2019 Australian Open Betting Odds to Win: +450
The two-time defending champion has already moved on to the second round after making short work of Dennis Istomin in the opening round. You would expect Federer to deliver more of the same in Round Two, where he will face British player Daniel Evans.
Federer is certainly not getting any younger, but he is also not showing any real signs of slowing down. He may run into Rafael Nadal later in the tournament, which is likely to be his toughest stop on the way to the final, assuming he goes the distance.
- 2019 Australian Open Betting Odds to Win: +650
The Brisbane International serves as the warm-up event for the Australian Open, and the bad news for fans of the Spanish ace is that he was forced to pull out of that event with thigh issues.
Nadal’s career has not been as dominant as it should have been given the injury issues that he has had over the years, and while he is still in among the favorites to make a deep run in this tournament, he is definitely a risky bet given those recent injury concerns. Nadal will be facing a few Aussie players in the early going, and he has already survived the opening round with a straight-sets win over James Duckworth. Next up will be Matthew Ebden.
- 2019 Australian Open Betting Odds to Win: +1000
I am going to go with a bit of a surprise pick for the Australian Open, as my money will be on 21-year old Alexander Zverev. He closed out 2018 by beating Federer and Djokovic to become the youngest ever player to win the ATP Finals.
His game has turned around dramatically after hiring Ivan Lendl as his coach, and I think that 2019 could well be a breakout year for Zverev. His Australian Open will start on Monday with what looks to be an easy game against Aljaz Bedene.
