Sydney International – Round of 16
- Monday, Jan. 7
- When: 9:00 pm ET
Jordan Thompson +185 vs Daniil Medvedev -225
Jordan Thompson easily handled Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-3 in Round 1 of the Sydney International. That was a huge step up from last year where he went 1-11 in Singles Titles. Thompson did win $345,832, though.
22-year-old Russian soon to be superstar player Daniil Medvedev has already made a splash this year. He beat Andy Murray, 5 Milos Raonic, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to make it all the way to Brisbane International Finals. There, he lost to Kei Nishikori.
Medvedev offers overlay odds at -225. He’s the play.
Tennis Betting Pick: Daniil Medvedev
Robin Haase +100 vs David Ferrer -120
This is Haase’s first tennis match of the year. He went 24-31 in 2018 and earned over $1.195 million. He faces a talented opponent in David Ferrer on Monday.
The 36-year-old Ferrer only made $510,316 last year when going 9-18. He had to retire against Rafael Nadal in Round 1 of the U.S. Open. That’s why he’s offering only slightly lower odds than Haase to win on Jan. 7.
Is Ferrer worth a play? Probably not. Although he’s a better tennis player than Haase when healthy, there’s no telling in what shape he’ll be in on Monday. Haase is worth backing at even money.
Tennis Betting Pick: Robin Haase
Gael Monfils -195 vs Ugo Humbert +165
Gael Monfils is being given the benefit of the doubt to win in Round 16 of the Sydney International. Monfils hasn’t yet played this year, but he had a very nice 2018. He made over $1.269 million when winning 29 and losing only 20 singles matches.
He’s favored over Ugo Humbert, but the dog might have the edge. Humbert made it to Round 2 at the U.S. Open last year. He pushed Stanislas Wawrinka to 4 sets when winning a set 6-4. He can play.
Tennis Betting Pick: Ugo HumbertGuido Pella +125 vs Peter Gojowczyk -125
In Pella’s last match, he lost to Marco Cecchinato at the Qatar Exxon Mobil Open. That might set him up well on Monday. Pella enters 2019 off his very best year as a pro. He made $879,596 in 2018. That’s $200,000 better than his previous top year as a pro.
Peter Gojowczyk offers lower odds, but there’s really nothing that says he’s got an edge over Pella. When in doubt, always back the tennis player with the better odds.
Tennis Betting Pick: Guido Pella
