The first day of play is complete at Pinehurst for the 2024 US Open. The round brought us some surprising upsets plsy two familiar names sit atop the leaderboard, but, there is a path for many to make a run at them over the weekend.
The first round and familiar faces atop the leaderboard. Before we delve into the weekend’s key storylines and potential movers and shakers, remember, the US Open is a marathon, not a sprint.
Let’s take a look at the updated for the weekend play for the 2024 US Open.
Top Golfers to Put Your Money Down
Rory Mcllroy +240
After one day the Northern Ireland native, who was in the news for some personal life earlier this week is the favorite.
Rory was in the Top 3 in the betting odds to start the event, but took over after one day.
Rory shot a -5 and is tied with Patrick Cantlay atop the leaderboard. Rory did not bogey a hole all day, and went back to back birdies on hole four and five.
Rory is the third ranked player in the world, so this is not a surprise to anyone who follows the game.
Scottie Scheffler +600
The top player in the world was not sharp on Day 1.
Scottie hit bogies on three and six, and then again on 16.
He came away with two birdies, on 7 and 17. Scheffler ended his first round +1 on the day.
He is six strokes back. Many other guys if they were six strokes back after one day would be astronomical odds to come back and win.
But, the top player in the world is second, at +600 heading into Friday.
Ludvig Aberg +700
There has been buzz around this 24 year old from Sweden.
The former Texas Tech Red Raiders golfer is poised to take down a major.
Will it be the 2024 US Open?
That is the question we are all waiting to find out. He will head into Friday all alone in third place at -4.
He shot six birdies in round one, and hit bogies on six and 14.
Aberg is third in the betting odds, as he comes in at +700.
Bryson DeChambeau +750
It was a good first round for the 30 year old from SMU.
DeChambeau can be a bit of a wildcard, and his cards were played right on Thursday.
Bryson was -1 after the first nine, and hit a birdie on 13 and again on 18 to finish -3.
That places him tied for fourth place heading into the weekend.
DeChambeau came into the event ranked 38th in the world.
Patrick Cantlay +900
Despite being one of the co-leaders, Cantlay is not getting a ton of love from oddsmakers.
The 32 year old from California was -4 through nine holes.
He went to -5 before a bogey on 15, but bounced back and hit another birdie on 18.
Cantlay and Mcllroy are tied at the top of the leaderboard heading into the weekend.
He came into the event ranked 9th in the world, and was 21st in the FedEx Cup standings.
Xander Schauffele +1600
The second ranked player in the world was not super sharp on Thursday.
Schauffele, who won the last major – the PGA Championship is even after one round.
The 30 year old from San Diego had a tough time on the front nine as he went three bogies in four holes.
Xander is +1600 according to oddsmakers.
He was able to get back on track a little with three birdies in five holes, but a bogey on 14 put him back to even.
Despite being five shots back, Xander is +1600 according to oddsmakers.
Some Other Key US Open Golfers
Tommy Fleetwood +5000
Fleetwood is a guy that some were talking about that had the ability to win this event.
He struggled a little in the first round, but came away with an even score, which is just five strokes behind the leaders.
Fleetwood is now 50/1 to win the US Open.
Max Homa +11000
One of the more popular golfers on the tour went +1 for his opening round on Thursday.
Fortunately for many of the golfers, the cut is going to be in the positive numbers before it is all said and done.
Homa is going to need a big Friday to get back in the mix.
Hideki Matsuyama +15000
The 32 year old from Japan is +2 for the tournament. Hideki was +1 over in the front nine and +1 in the second nine.
He had just three birdies on the day, and five bogies.
He will look for a much better second round to possibly catapult into a shot on Saturday and Sunday.
Jordan Spieth +25000
The 30 year old from Dallas is +2 for the tournament. While that currently is going to make the cut, that is 7 strokes back of the leader.
Spieth is coming off a poor weekend at the Memorial, and does not have a win this year.
It does not appear the US Open will be his first.
Justin Thomas +100000
The golf world is wondering what in the world is going on with Justin Thomas. He has been really poor, and was even more poor on Thursday. He went +3 on the front nine and +4 on the back nine.
Thomas is +7 and 12 strokes back of the lead.
He is going to need a great Friday to even have a chance to compete on Saturday and Sunday.

PGA Tour 2021 US Open Betting Update for the Weekend Play
Previous Betting News
Round two of the 121st U.S. Open is wrapping up at the South Course at Torrey Pines Golf Club in La Jolla, CA. Friday was a long day for some players who needed to finish their first rounds in the morning after a delayed start to the opening round due to weather.
The projected cut as of writing this is at 4-over, with many notable professionals teetering on the line or outside of it. The top 60 players, including ties, on the leaderboard get through to the weekend. Let’s have a look at our latest PGA Tour betting update so you can get all set to keep betting against their US Open odds.
U.S. Open Updates and Weekend Preview – PGA Tour Betting
Oosthuizen, Henley Take 18 Hole Lead
Louis Oosthuizen and Russell Henley were your co-leaders after the first 18 holes of play. Henley was part of the morning wave, collecting six birdies and two bogeys on the card to set the bar for the afternoon players.
Oooshuizen, who won the 2010 Open Championship and has finished runner up in the other three majors, had just one bogey on the card with five birdies. The 38-year old included an impressive stretch of three-straight birdies on the 16th, 17th, and 18th holes.
Richard Bland Moves into Solo First
The 48-year old is playing in only his fourth major over his two-decade career. Bland looked in complete control in round 2, firing a 4-under, 67 to post back-to-back rounds under par.
In his 478th start, the English golfer won for the first time on the European Tour. The Betfred British Masters victory secured Bland a spot in the U.S. Open field, and he was the oldest first-time winner on the Euro Tour.
Star Power Moving on to the Weekend
A long list of star players will be teeing it up this weekend, including a handful of the World’s best near the top of the leaderboard. However, U.S. Open history will tell us that anything is possible on the weekend if you can get there.
Vegas favorite John Rahm scrambled all day up and down out of bunkers to finish at one-under and 3-under for the tournament. Defending U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau shook off some earlier bogeys to get himself under par and back to even for the tournament.
Rory McIlroy didn’t have his best stuff on Friday, finishing his second round at 2-over. As a result, McIlroy heads into the third round at one-over for the tournament and currently tied for 25th.
Dustin Johnson (+2), Hideki Matsuyama (+3), Patrick Cantlay (+3), Jordan Speith (+4), and Collin Morikawa (+4) are all safely within the current cutline as the afternoon wave gets going on the course.
What to Watch this Weekend
Typically, the USGA sets the course up a bit easier on Thursday and Friday to ease into the tournament and feel how the weather will affect the golf course. You can bet that the course will play a lot different on Saturday and Sunday as they ramp up the speed of the greens and choose challenging pin locations for players to hit to.
No lead is safe, and don’t be surprised if someone near the cut line makes a charge in the early wave of Saturday’s third round. Getting out early and posting a number may be beneficial as the wind is not nearly a factor as it has been in the afternoon.

U.S. Open: Weekend Betting Action
Previous Betting News
The 122nd U.S. Open from The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts began with first-round pay on Thursday, June 16.
Canadian Adam Hadwin is the surprise leader at 4-under following a first-round 66.
Hadwin, world No. 105, leads a group of five players T-2 at 3-under-par. Rory McIlroy, the winner of last weekend’s RBC Canadian Open, headlines that group alongside Justin Rose and Joel Dahmen.
Defending champion Jon Rahm battled through the elements in the morning to enter the clubhouse at 1-under. Other notable players still in contention and the best US Open lines include Matt Fitzpatrick (-2), Will Zalatoris (-1), Justin Thomas (-1), Collin Morikawa (-1), and Xander Schauffele (E).
U.S. Open: Top Weekend Betting Action
Outright Odds
McIlroy entered the U.S. Open as the pre-tournament favorite at (+1000). Those odds have since lowered to (+450) after his impressive first-round performance. The 21-time winner on the PGA Tour had four birdies and 13 pars before scoring a bogey on No. 18 to close out his round.
Justin Thomas holds his status as the second favorite to win the tournament after his first-round performance. Thomas is listed at (+900), while Rahm (+1100), Matthew Fitzpatrick (+1200), and Rose (+1400) round out the top five outright winner favorites.
18 Hole Match-Ups (2nd Round)
Rory McIlroy (-120) vs. Jon Rahm (+100)
McIlroy is known for having poor first rounds at major championships, but he has looked like a completely different since the start of last weekend’s RBC Canadian Open. Whether it’s the challenge of defending the PGA Tour against LIV Golf or just that he’s finally rounding his game back into form, he’s motivated and expects nothing less than a championship at The Country Club.
Rahm, for his part, did well to score 1-under on Thursday, but didn’t look sharp, particularly early on with his irons and putter. Expect McIlroy to keep cruising.
Xander Schauffele (-130) vs. Max Homa (+100)
Schauffele is still searching for his first major championship after T-2 finishes at the 2018 Open Championship and 2019 Masters Tournament. He looks comfortable at The Country Club, whereas Homa had more of an up-and-down day with five birdies and four bogeys.
3 Balls (2nd Round)
Harold Varner III (+137) vs. Sebastian Munoz (+200) vs. Alex Noren (+190)
If you’re looking for good value in a 3-ball underdog, look no further than Sebastian Munoz. The Colombian shot a four-over 74 on Thursday in large part to a double bogey on No. 8. He’ll likely be playing some inspired golf to make the cut given that he hasn’t missed a cut in 11 consecutive tournaments.
Joaquin Niemann (+180) vs. Cameron Young (+210) vs. Will Zalatoris (+140)
Will Zalatoris was two-over through the first four holes on Thursday, but finished with three birdies in his last six holes to put himself into contention. Like Schauffele, he’s looking for his first major championship after some near misses, including a playoff loss to Thomas at the PGA Championship.
Niemann, meanwhile, shot 1-over after recording a bogey in three of his last four holes. Cameron Young finished 2-over. Expect Zalatoris to keep the momentum going on Friday.
