Why Bet on Minnesota?
The Twins lost the series opener Monday 5-2, their fourth defeat in five games. Gary Sánchez hit a two-run homer for the lone runs. He crushed 473-foot shot to left field off Yankees starter Jameson Taillon in the fifth inning. It was the fourth-longest home run tracked at Yankee Stadium in the Statcast era dating back to 2015.
Outfielder Max Kepler struck out as a pinch-hitter. Kepler was a late scratch from the Twins’ starting lineup on Monday afternoon due to hip tightness, but was able to come off the bench in the final frame to face Yankees stopper Clay Holmes. He’s considered day-to-day. The Twins have a handful of regulars on the injured list as well.
Carlos Correa is hitting .312 with seven doubles, nine home runs, 26 RBI, 15 walks, a .383 on-base percentage, a .584 slugging percentage and a .967 OPS in 34 career regular season games against the Yankees. Among all AL rookies with a minimum of 300 at-bats this season, Jose Miranda ranks second in batting average (.274) and OPS (.772), and third in slugging percentage (.446) and on-base percentage (.326). Since the All-Star Break, he is hitting .303 (44-for-145) with six doubles, five home runs, 26 RBI, a .366 on-base percentage, a .448 slugging percentage and an .815 OPS in 38 games.
It’s right-hander Joe Ryan on the mound Tuesday. Ryan (10-7) took the loss against Boston last Wednesday, tossing five innings and allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out eight batters. All five of the runs Ryan gave up came in the third inning, when he served up a grand slam to Xander Bogaerts and a solo shot to J.D. Martinez. Though the right-hander racked up 19 swinging strikes and punched out eight batters, the poor frame was too much for Minnesota to overcome. Ryan has Stat cast allowed at least five runs on three different occasions, including a 10-run shelling against San Diego on July 29. He’s still managed to post a decent 3.88 ERA and 1.14 WHIP while racking up 121 strikeouts over 118.1 innings overall.
Ryan is the 14th pitcher (12th starter) in Twins history (since 1961) to win 10 games and the 10th with over 100 strikeouts (currently 121). He will make his first career start and appearance against the New York Yankees. Ryan is 1-1, 3.57 ERA (22.2 IP, 9 ER) in four career starts against the American League East, all coming this season (2 each vs. Baltimore and Boston).
Why Bet on NY Yankees?
Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton was removed from Monday’s game after fouling a ball off the top of his foot/ankle. Manager Aaron Boone said he’s not sure whether Stanton will be available for Tuesday’s game. Outfielder Andrew Benintendi will have surgery on Tuesday after breaking a bone in his right wrist during a swing Friday night. Boone said Benintendi, acquired from Kansas City in late July, could play again this season. “I think the possibility of him returning is still in play,” Boone said.
First baseman Anthony Rizzo (lower back) is expected to resume baseball activities Wednesday. Rizzo was originally scheduled to resume baseball activities Monday but experienced headaches as a side effect from an epidural shot.
Aaron Judge hit his MLB-best 54th home run of the season on Monday. Judge clobbered a tie-breaking 404-foot blast to left field against Twins reliever Trevor Megill in the sixth inning for his eighth round-tripper in his last 13 games. He notched a pair of hits and reached base safely in three of his four plate appearances. He’s seven homers shy of matching Roger Maris’s American League-record that was set back in 1961.
Judge is just the second Yankee and the fifth Major League player to hit at least 54 home runs through his club’s first 135 games of a season, joining Barry Bonds (57HR in 2001 with SFG), Sammy Sosa (57HR in 1999 with CHC), Mark McGwire (54HR in 1998 with STL) and Babe Ruth (54HR in 1921 with NYY). Judge has 113th career home run at Yankee Stadium, matching Mark Teixeria for the most at the current park. Judge has homered in three straight games for the ninth time in his career and third time this season (also 3G from 4/28-5/1 and 7/28-30).
It’s ace Gerrit Cole on the mound Tuesday. Cole (10-7) took the loss last Wednesday versus the Angels, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out four over seven innings. All of the damage against Cole came in the sixth inning when Shohei Ohtani took him deep for a three-run home run. The four strikeouts were Cole’s lowest total in a start since June 9. While it wasn’t the best of outings for the right-hander, he was able to log his fourth quality start in six games in August. He’s at a 3.28 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 204:40 K:BB through 164.2 innings across 27 starts this year.
Cole was blasted at Minnesota on June 9, allowing seven runs and eight hits in just 2.1 innings. Cole gave up home runs to his first three batters and a career-high five overall.
