Players To Watch

  • Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner, who narrowly missed out on making the top eight in Paris last week, travels to Stockholm as one of the top favorites to win the title. He has already shown up in Sofia and Antwerp in recent weeks, so he should be feeling confident about his chances to add another title to his name.

However, we don’t believe the Italian will be motivated to step up his game since he missed out on qualifying for the ATP Finals. Of course, you could argue with that and remind us that Sinner won in Sofia; however, he entered that tournament fresher than how he is now.

Considering how much tennis the 20-year-old had to play in recent weeks, adding to the disappointment of missing out on Turin, Sinner might not be the best bet. That is even though he has the talent to compete for the top honors.

What’s more, Sinner’s first match will be against the former no.1, Andy Murray, and from the looks of it, the match should be winnable for the Scot. Admittedly, Murray has been inconsistent with his showings of late, but he can still compete with the world’s elite tennis players at his best.

  • Taylor Fritz

Taylor Fritz played well in Paris, but he ended up losing to Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals (4-6, 3-6), which isn’t great, nor is it awful, considering he had to face the current no.1 in the world. Prior to that, Fritz made it to the finals of the St. Petersburg Open and semi-finals of Indian Wells. And if we look even further back, Fritz won in Atlanta.

Admittedly, Fritz has had some poor showings in August in September, but he started playing significantly better of late and should be considered a serious threat for the title in Stockholm.

This year, the Stockholm Open will use a Plexipave surface, which was last used in 2010, when Roger Federer won the title. From what we’ve seen in the qualifiers, the surface introduces a quicker game, which is exactly the kind of game Fritz likes.

We’re counting on Fritz’s big serve to secure him some cheap points, while his confidence from achieving plenty of late should serve as fuel to drive Fritz to the top. There might be better players than Fritz on paper, but he is definitely a strong dark horse.

  • Marton Fucsovics

Marton Fucsovics hasn’t had the best season, but we must remember that he made it to the final of the Rotterdam indoor event in spring. What’s more, he finished second indoors in Sofia in 2019.

Even recently, the Hungarian has shown some promising performances, suggesting that he has left his mid-season slump behind and is ready to compete in Stockholm. With the recent resurgence, we’re primarily referring to Fucsovics’s performance in Antwerp, where he pushed Djokovic to a deciding set.

Obviously, Fucsovics is a longshot pick, but his recent performances are exactly what you would seek in a darkhorse. He might fall flat at the first hurdle, or maybe Fucsovics will underdeliver in the final stages, but if he can build on what he has shown in recent months, Fucsovics just might surprise everyone.
