An ATP 250 outdoor hard courts tournament held at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the Winston-Salem Open has been played for more than 50 years. This year marks the 54th edition of the tournament, the last scheduled event on the ATP Tour before the US Open. 

Because it’s so close to the US Open and the fact there was a pair of ATP 1000 events in Cincinnati and Toronto the last two weeks, there’s quite a diminished field at this year’s Winston-Salem Open.

Defending champion Adrian Mannarino withdrew before the start of the tournament, while Tallon Griekspoor, the world No. 25, is the highest-ranked player.

Past Champions

While the Winston-Salem Open hasn’t exactly attracted many of the world’s top players in recent years, it has had quite a few talented champions.

Mannarino defeated Laslo Djere in straight sets to win the title last year, while Ilya Ivashka beat Mikael Ymer in the final to win in 2021. Hubert Hurkacz and Daniil Medvedev won in 2019 and 2018, respectively. 

Ivashka was the only former champion in the field, but he is already out following a first-round defeat. 

A Review of Early Action

Ivashka, who has struggled this season after reaching a career-best world No. 40 in June 2022, lost his first-round match in three sets to Zhang Zhizhen, who advances to play Marton Fucsovics in the second round.

Also in first-round action, Brandon Nakashima defeated Jason Kubler in three sets, and Benjamin Bonzi won in straight sets against fellow French player Alexandre Muller. 

Monday’s Best Bets

Michael Mmoh (-309) vs. Darian King (+230)

Although Michael Mmoh and Darian King might not be household names in tennis, they have a pretty decorated history of playing against each other.

Mmoh and King have played seven matches at Challenger and other lower-level events, with Mmoh, the world No. 94, holding a 4-3 advantage. King is ranked world No. 497 but has reached three M15 finals this season and holds a 30-5 record, including 16-4 on hard court.

Mmoh has been playing much tougher competition this year, but he could get caught off guard by King, who is coming in playing some of the best tennis of his career – he hadn’t reached a final at any level in three years before this season.

Daniel Galan (-120) vs. Sebastian Baez (-106)

Daniel Galan and Sebastian Baez will meet for the first time in their careers on Monday in second-round action. Galan, the world No. 70, earned a spot in the second round with his 6-1, 7-5 win over Radu Albot. Baez, the sixth seed, received an automatic bye into the second round.

Baez is 21-19 this season and coming off of a victory at the Generali Open in Austria, his second title of the season and third of his career. He’s in great form and should advance past Galan.

Winston-Salem Open Finals Prediction

This is such a wide-open tournament with no players ranked inside the top 20. Assuming he wins his match against Galan, Baez could very well advance to another final, although he still needs to prove himself on the hard court.

Djere, who reached the finals in Winston-Salem last season, is a better option to win the top half of the draw. The bottom half should be more competitive, but American Sebastian Korda is the favorite.

All Eyes on Pablo Carreno-Busta

Pablo Carreno-Busta travels to Winston-Salem as the man to beat. He is priced as the main betting favorite to claim the trophy, which seems fair, considering his recent success.

Carreno-Busta has recently made it to the quarter-finals of Cincinnati Masters, where he lost to Daniil Medvedev (1-6, 1-6). Just a week prior, he has won the German Open and has made it to the semi-finals of the 2021 Mallorca Open.

As the highest-rated player at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open (no.12), Carreno-Busta is expected to do well, although you have to feel a bit concerned about his performances on hard courts. He is 11/5 on the year and 20/10 across the last two seasons.

His career average win rate on hard courts is at 64.73%, and he has underperformed against weaker opponents on this surface before.

Nick Kyrgios and Marin Cilic As The Main Threats

Nick Kyrgios is priced as the second-favorite to win the 2021 Winston-Salem Open, even though he is ranked only 81st in the ATP Rankings. The always-controversial Australian tennis star will attend the 2021 Winston-Salem Open hoping to bounce back following iffy showings over the last few months, having failed to achieve any notable success outside of R3 at the 2021 Wimbledon.

What’s more, Kyrgios is 5/5 on hard courts in 2021 and 11/8 across the last two seasons. Regardless, he has proven before that he can do well on this surface, having managed 18/9 in 2019, 15/8 in 2018, and 27/11 in 2017.

Marin Cilic has recently made it to Round of 32 at Cincinnati Masters, where he lost to Andrey Rublev (7-6, 3-6, 1-6). Before that, the Croatian tennis player made it to Round of 32 at the 2021 Canadian Open and R3 in Wimbledon.

His most recent tournament title happened in June when he won the Stuttgart Open with a 7-6, 6-3 victory against Felix Auger Aliassime. Despite his relative success over the season, Cilic’s hardcourt record leaves a lot to be desired.

He is 6/7 on the year and 13/12 over the last two seasons. Like Kyrgios, Cilic has been far more efficient on this surface in 2017-2019, with a combined record of 44/26.

Marton Fucsovics Could Surprise

Marton Fucsovics is an outsider to win the 2021 Winston-Salem Open, but he has done well enough for us to have faith in him. The 29-year-old Hungarian player made it to the quarter-finals in Wimbledon, where he lost to Novak Djokovic (3-6, 4-6, 4-6), which was still an excellent showing from the current world no.37.

The biggest reason why everyone should keep an eye on Fucsovics is his fairly favorable road to the finals. Even though there are a few strong players who will stand in his way, the only scary opponent is Frances Tiafoe, who Fucsovics will likely meet in the semi-finals and should be able to defeat.

Fucsovics has also been showing solid form on hard courts. He is 9/6 on the year, although three of those losses happened against Andrey Rublev and his most recent one was against Cincinnati Masters quarter-finalist Felix Auger Aliassime.

There is a good chance we might see Fucsovics and Carreno-Busta clash in the finals, which makes Fucsovics a solid e/w bet.
