Past Winners

Pablo Carreño Busta defeated Alexander Bublik in a memorable final in 2019, the last time the Chengdu Open took place. Busta won the match 6-7 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 7-3. The other three winners in Chengdu Open history are Bernard Tomic 2018, Denis Istomin 2017, and Karen Khachanov 2016. Bublik is the only one of those players in this year’s draw.

This Year’s Draw

The 2023 Chengdu Open has a fairly solid field of talent despite it being near the end of the ATP 2023 season schedule.

None of the players inside the top eight have opted to play; however, world No. 10 Alexander Zverev, the top seed in the tournament, could improve his ranking and temporarily put himself into the top eight that qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.

There are eight players inside the world’s top 50 at Chengdu. Lorenzo Musetti, the world No. 18, is the second seed in the tournament. Others inside the top 50 include Grigor Dmitrov, Dan Evans, Bublik, and Miomir Kecmanovic.

First-Round Betting Matchups

Alexander Bublik vs. Marcos Giron

ATP Odds: Alexander Bublik -150; Marcos Giron +120
First Round: Men’s Singles

Since he was a runner-up in 2019, Bublik has had an up-and-down career on the ATP Tour, and this year has been more of the latter. He reached the Round of 16 at Wimbledon but was out in straight sets in the first round of the US Open and clearly lacked the confidence he has shown in the past. He’s 20-23, including an awful 3-11 on hard courts, this season.

Marcos Giron, meanwhile, is 22-23 this season and 10-12 on hard courts. He has a 2-1 career advantage over Bublik in three matches, but both of those wins were on clay, and Bublik’s win was on hard courts. Expect a turnaround for Bublik as he takes this one in three sets.

Taro Daniel vs. Aleksander Vukic

ATP Odds: ATaro Daniel -110; Aleksander Vukic -110
First Round: Men’s Singles

Taro Daniel, a last-minute replacement for Roberto Bautista Agut, takes on Aleksander Vukic in one of the matches in the top half of the draw. Daniel, the world No. 95, is 28-24 this season, including Challenger matches, including 6-4 in his last ten matches. Vukic is 46-28 across all competition levels but just 4-6 in his last 10.

Daniel and Vukic have never played each other and have similar abilities, so it’s not surprising this is a pick-em. Both players are coming off first-round losses at the US Open, but Daniel is the smart pick, likely in a three-set result.

Chengdu Open Final Prediction

Zverev has the most to play for in this tournament and is the clear betting favorite. He should have no trouble advancing in the top half, but there are plenty of potential spoilers in the bottom half, including Bublik, Dan Evans, and Lorenzo Musetti.

Still, it’s hard to bet against the Olympic champion as he marches toward a spot in the top eight for the ATP Finals.
