The ATP Tour has a pair of 250 events this week, one on hard courts in Florida and another on clay in Argentina. The ATP Buenos Aires – Argentina Open features the return from injury of Carlos Alcaraz, as the top seed and the tournament favorite.

The field at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club also features two-time event winner Dominica Thiem, 2021 winner Diego Schwartzman, world No. 11 Cameron Norrie, and last week’s winner in Cordoba, Sebastian Baez. Let’s take a look at some of the ATP odds in the Argentina Open at MyBookie.

Tennis Picks and Analysis: ATP 250 – Argentina Open

The Favorites

Alcaraz hasn’t played since the Paris Masters in late 2022, but he is the top seed and the favorite at -130 to win the tournament. The young Spaniard was 26-4 on clay last season with three tournament wins. The injury kept Alcaraz from the ATP Finals, the Australian Open, and Davis Cup, but he returns this week with hopes to gear up for Indian Wells, Miami, and the clay court Masters season before the French Open.

Norrie is the No. 2 seed, and he’s reached three finals on clay in his career with a win at the Lyon Open last May. He skipped the Delray Beach Open this week, where he is the defending champion, to get more matches on clay before the French.

Schwartzman is the No. 4 seed, and he’s reached the final of this event in two straight years and three of the last four. However, the Argentinian was the top seed last week in Cordoba and lost in his first match.

Baez is a nice longshot pick as he just won the Cordoba Open, his second career title. The 22-year-old is seeded sixth and would likely face Alcaraz in the quarterfinals.

Cerundolo -165

As the fifth seed, Francisco Cerundolo is -165 to win his opening match against qualifier Yannick Hanfmann (+135). The 24-year-old is 4-4 on the season after being forced to retire in the second set last week against Federico Coria. He recovered quickly, though, and appears ready to go this week.

Cerundolo should be able to navigate the first match against Hanfmann, who is 0-1 in official matches this season and had to qualify for this event. These two have never met on tour, but Cerundolo swept Hanfmann in the qualifiers for this same event a year ago, 7-6, 6-1.

Thiem -140

A two-time winner in Buenos Aires, Thiem is a wildcard this time around as he still rebuilds ranking points after missing most of 2022. He is -140 as the first-round favorite against No. 7 seed Alex Molcan (+115) on Tuesday.

The injury knocked Thiem out of the top 100, and he’s now at 99, 48 spots behind Molcan, who has a 1-4 record this year. Both players took last week off after representing their countries in Davis Cup matches. They have never met, but Thiem should advance if he is healthy.

A win on Tuesday sets up Thiem for a nice run in Argentina, a place where he won in 2016 and 2018. He would potentially face No. 3 Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals and Norrie in the semifinals, tough but negotiable matches for a former Grand Slam champion.

The 2022 ATP Buenos Aires (Argentina Open) is a men’s tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts at Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It will mark the 25th edition of the ATP Buenos Aires event as a part of the ATP 250 series of the 2022 ATP Tour.

The tournament is set to kick off on Monday, February 7, and conclude on Sunday, February 13, with the grand finals.

The confirmed field of players at the 2022 ATP Buenos Aires will include three of the top-25 rated players in the world, including Casper Ruud (no.8), the defending champion, Diego Schwartzman (no.14) and Lorenzo Sonego (no.23), as the third seed.

Joining the top-seeded players are Fabio Fognini (no.31), Dušan Lajović (no.38), Federico Delbonis (no.41), Albert Ramos Viñolas (no.44), and Laslo Đere (no.49). Initially, the tournament was supposed to feature Dominic Thiem, but the Austrian tennis player had to withdraw with an injury and got replaced by the current no.92 in the ATP Rankings, Thiago Monteiro.

• Casper Ruud

The top-seeded player of the 2022 Argentina Open, Casper Ruud, travels to Argentina, where he’ll attend his second singles tennis tournament of the year. The Norwegian tennis star was last seen competing in the ATP Cup in January, where he picked up a win against Lajovic (2-0) and Garin (0-2) but lost their remaining two bouts against Bautista-Agut (0-2),

Unfortunately, Ruud did not attend the 2022 Australian Open, so his mediocre performance at the ATP Cup is the only form guide we have on him. And suffice to say, it’s not looking good. Admittedly, he will face much easier opposition in Argentina, but lower-rated opponents don’t necessarily mean he’ll achieve much success.

Ruud definitely has the talent needed to go all the way and win his second Argentina Open title. Still, he might not be the best bet, as there are plenty of players more than capable of beating him on the Argentinian clay, including the home favorite, Diego Schwartzman.

• Diego Schwartzman

The defending Argentina Open champion, Diego Schwartzman, will seek his second title on home clay this week. Schwartzman won the tournament in 2021 with a 2-0 sweep of his compatriot Francisco Cerúndolo and has made the finals in 2019 when he had to admit defeat to Marco Cecchinato (1-6, 2-6).

Although lower-rated than the 2020 champion, Schwartzman has enjoyed a solid start to the 2022 season. He picked up two wins in the ATP Cup – against Basilashvil (2-0) and Tsitsipas (2-1), but lost to Hurkacz. At the 2022 Australian Open, Schwartzman could only manage R2, where he lost to O’Connell (0-3), which isn’t the best look, but there is no hiding that Schwartzman performs much better on clay – as evident from his QF appearance at the 2021 French Open.

Schwartzman might have had a rocky start to the season, but it’s fair to expect great things from him in the 2022 Argentina Open.

• Lorenzo Sonego

The third-seeded player Lorenzo Sonego might be a dark horse to win it all. The 26-year-old Italian has made QF in the Sydney International and had a solid showing at the 2022 Australian Open, where he beat Querrey (3-0), Otte (3-1), and narrowly lost to Kecmanovic (1-3) in R3.

Since then, Sonego also attended the Cordoba Open, where he made QF but had to admit defeat to the eventual finalist, Ramos-Vinolas (6-7, 5-7). Admittedly, Sonego has not achieved much at the highest level of play yet, but he has made the semi-finals of the Italian Open in 2021, and his run to the third round of the Australian Open is nothing to sneeze at either.

It’s also worth noting that Sonego has had solid showings in Argentina before. And considering the growth we saw from Sonego towards the end of 2021, and early into 2022, he is definitely one to keep an eye on.

2022 Cordoba Open Info

The 2022 Cordoba Open is a men’s tennis event and the first clay-court tennis tournament of the season. It will take place on the world-renowned Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes in Cordoba, Argentina, and mark the opening leg of the Latin American swing, most commonly referred to as the “Golden Swing.”

The 2022 Cordoba Open will run between January 31 – February and mark the tournament’s fourth edition. The tournament is part of the ATP Tour 250 series of the 2022 ATP Tour.

Attending the event are nine of the top-40 rated players in the world, including three of the top-20. The home-crowd favorite, world no.13 Diego Schwartzman, leads the pack, followed by Dominic Thiem (no.16) as the second seed and Cristian Garin (no.19) as the third seed.

Filling in the remaining five of the top-nine seeds are Lorenzo Sonego (no.26), Fabio Fognini (no.32), Federico Delbonis (no.38), Albert Ramos Viñolas (no.44), and Laslo Đere (no.51). Unfortunately, the field will not include the two-time Cordoba Open champion Juan Manuel Cerúndolo (2019, 2021), but we will see the 2020 champion, Garín, looking to secure his second title on the Argentinian clay.

Players To Watch Out For

Diego Schwartzman

The 2022 Cordoba Open top seed Diego Schwartzman will look to make an impression in front of the home crowd and improve upon his performance in 2020, when he made it to the finals, only to lose to Garin with 6-2, 4-6, 0-6. However, while Schwartzman has tasted success here before, he wasn’t too convincing with his performance in the 2022 Australian Open.

On a more positive note, Schwartzman kicked off the 2022 season with a solid showing at the ATP Cup in Australia, where he won against Basilashvili (6-1, 6-2) and Tsitsipas (6-7, 6-3, 6-3), but wasn’t able to make it past Hurkacz (1-6, 4-6). 

But while Schwartzman looked solid in the pre-Australian Open tournament, he couldn’t show up on the big stage. The Argentinian player crashed out of the 2022 AO in the second round, where he lost against the home crowd favorite, O’Connell, in straight sets.

Schwartzman will want to bounce back on the home soil following an up-and-down start to the season. But while he should be in a good spot to do so, he will face tough opposition.

Dominic Thiem

After taking a long break from the tennis courts due to an injury, the 2020 US Open champion, Dominic Thiem, will make his 2022 ATP season debut at the 2022 Cordoba Open. The 28-year-old was last seen competing at the Mallorca Open in June 2021, when he retired in the Round of 16.

The injury that saw the Austrian tennis player skip the majority of the 2021 season came shortly after he crashed out of the 2021 French Open. Now, after seven months, Thiem is ready to make a comeback and start paving his way to his second Grand Slam title. But first, he needs to prove his fitness at the 2022 Cordoba Open.

Cristian Garín

The 2020 Cordoba Open champion, Cristian Garín, enters the event as the third seed and a player that has proven before that he can make a splash at the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes. However, the Chilean has yet to find any serious traction in the 2022 season.

He could manage only one win at the ATP Cup at the start of January – against Lajovic (4-6, 6-4, 3-0), but lost the remaining two against Bautista Agut (0-6, 3-6)m and Ruud (4-6, 1-6). Garin was slightly better at the Australian Open, where he reached R3 with wins against Bagnis and Martinez, but had to admit defeat to Monfils, who beat him 7-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Like Thiem, Garin will have a lot to prove, but if he can find the same form he had shown last year (R4 in French Open and Wimbledon), he could surprise the field and collect his second Cordoba Open title.

Despite his lack of experience, Popyrin is the pick here for me, seeing as how he’s clearly on his way up the ATP rankings while Mannarino has probably reached his full potential at this lat juncture of his career.

Lukas Rosol vs. Roberto Marcora

The 34-year-old Rosol, now ranked 176th in the world, has never faced the 30-year-old Marcora who is ranked 174th in the ATP world rankings. While both of these players don’t have a win on the ATP circuit this year, Rosol did manage to win a pair of qualifying matches Down Under before falling in his third match. Marcora lost in his opening match in Bangkok before splitting a pair of qualifying matches at the Australian Open. I’m super disappointed that Lukas Rosol hasn’t quite lived up to his potential since making a name for himself a few years back by beating Rafael Nadal on Centre Court at Wimbledon in 2012, but I’m going with the more explosive veteran out of sheer desperation, if nothing else.
