Series History
Tennessee leads all-time 8-7 dating to its Houston Oilers days. The teams last met in 2019 in Atlanta and the Titans won 24-10. Marcus Mariota threw three first-half touchdown passes, two to A.J. Brown, and the Titans defense had three fourth-down stops. Both Mariota and Brown are long gone now. Derrick Henry ran for 100 yards to keep Tennessee’s offense balanced. The Falcons, held to only a field goal in the second half, were unable to maintain drives despite Matt Ryan’s 397 yards passing. Ryan is now retired.

Why Bet on Atlanta?
Atlanta won at Tampa Bay, 16-13, on a game-winning 51-yard field goal by Younghoe Koo as time expired last Sunday. The decisive field goal was the seventh game-winner of Koo’s career, all of which have come in the last three seasons. That ties him with Las Vegas’ Daniel Carlson for the most game-winners as time expired, including overtime, since the start of the 2021 season. All told, he was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts, converting them from 24, 41 and 51 yards and Koo was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.
QB Desmond Ridder completed 19 of 25 passes for 250 yards without a touchdown or interception. He added six carries for 38 yards and a touchdown while fumbling three times, losing all three. Ridder got off to a hot start, completing all four of his passes for 46 yards on the opening drive before capping it with a two-yard rushing touchdown. That success didn’t last, as Ridder failed to lead another touchdown drive and lost three fumbles in the red zone, including two at the 1-yard line. It was the first road win of Ridder’s career.
Top rookie RB Bijan Robinson was barely used in the win because he was dealing with headaches and that ruined many fantasy teams last week. The NFL had opened an inquiry into the Falcons after Robinson played 11 snaps, with only one carry for 3 yards. Smith said Robinson, who has 404 rushing yards and 189 receiving yards this season, would play this week and Robinson isn’t on the injury report. Smith also said he believes “everything is transparent.”
The Atlanta defense has been terrific against the run, allowing just one rushing TD. Overall, the Falcons have limited opponents to an average of 95.3 rushing yards per game, ranking the defense No. 8 in the statistical category. In each of the last three games, opposing offenses have not surpassed 100 rushing yards vs. the Falcons. In total, Atlanta’s last three opponents are 3-for-8 (37.5%) in the red zone, and 12-of-35 on third down (34%). Beyond the last three games, no Falcons opponent has scored more than 24 points in a single game. They’ve given up one singular rushing touchdown all year.
“I think the run defense is doing a great job,” Falcons assistant head coach/defense Jerry Gray said. “Sometimes we play with a light box, and that means there’s not enough guys in there so somebody else has to two-gap. They’re doing a fantastic job, the D-linemen and the linebackers. They’re actually doing that for us to stop the explosive passes. Then, when you get to the red zone, now we get other guys in there. So, I think (the success is) a combination of both the red zone and the D-line.”
The Falcons netted 401 yards of offense vs. Tampa Bay. It was the third consecutive game in which Atlanta had at least 400 net offensive yards, which hasn’t happened since 2018. Back then, the Falcons pulled it off three times: Weeks 2-4, Weeks 6-9 (bye was Week 8) and Weeks 15-17. — Wide receiver Drake London became the second-fastest player in Falcons history to reach 100 career receptions. He did so in 24 games, as his six receptions last Sunday put him at 104 overall. Only wide receiver Julio Jones hit the centennial mark quicker, in 23 games.
After only managing three plays on every opening drive in Weeks 1-5, the Falcons have scored on the last two opening offensive series.
Atlanta has a minus-seven turnover differential. Their red-zone percentage is below 50% (technically 48.7). Those numbers don’t portend winning football and could prove hurtful in the long run. They’ve found a way to first place despite those.

Why Bet on Tennessee?
The Titans come off their bye week at 2-4 and could be sellers ahead of next week’s Trade Deadline. In the 24-16 loss to Baltimore in London in Week 6, QB Ryan Tannehill had to leave with an ankle sprain and he’s not expected this week at least. Reports indicated he’s battling a high-ankle sprain, which tends to sideline players anywhere between four and six weeks. Tannehill also endured ankle issues late in 2022.
Even though second-year Malik Willis replaced Tannehill in the Baltimore loss and started three games last year as a rookie, going 1-2, rookie second-round pick Will Levis is expected to start this game, although Willis should also get snaps. Levis hasn’t played since the team’s first preseason game against the Bears back on August 12. He’s been the team’s No.3 QB through the first six weeks of the season.
Coach Mike Vrabel hinted at the possibility of alternating series between the two quarterbacks against Atlanta. Willis came off the bench and completed 4-of-5 passes for 74 yards against the Ravens, but he was sacked four times. He was not good last year in his three starts with a 1-2 record.
“If my name gets called I’ll be ready to go,” Levis said. “We do the same game plan and are both preparing for the same plays. We’ll have to be ready for all of it. Everything Malik can do I can do and vice versa.”
Starting WR Treylon Burks (knee) was a full practice participant this week. Burks is thus set to rejoin the lineup after three missed games and a Week 7 bye. The former first-round pick has just six catches for 99 yards.
The Titans this week traded star safety Kevin Byard to Philadelphia. The Eagles sent safety Terrell Edmunds plus two draft picks — 2024 fifth- and sixth-round selections — to the Titans. Byard has 27 interceptions since being drafted by the Titans in 2016. He was named a first-team All-Pro in 2017 and 2021 and finished the 2022 season with 108 tackles and four interceptions. He has 47 tackles in six games this season. Edmunds played in seven games for the Eagles in 2023, with two starts, and he’s been credited with 28 tackles.
Andre Dillard started the first six games of the season at left tackle, but he was pulled from the team’s game against the Ravens and replaced by Nicholas Petit-Frere. While Petit-Frere started 16 of 17 games at right tackle a year ago, his best chance to get on the field now appears to be on the left side.
Tennessee will wear its throwback Houston Oilers uniforms on Sunday. Tennessee’s Oilers throwbacks will feature Columbia Blue jerseys with red around white on the numbers, and names on the back, with a red, white and light blue band on the sleeves. They’ll also feature white helmets, with the famed oil derrick, with red facemasks and red stripes outside of a thicker light blue stripe on the top. The words ‘Luv Ya Blue” will be on the back neckline of the jerseys.
So far, the Titans have played six teams with a combined record of 20-19. The combined record of the teams over the next 11 games is 39-32, and that included the 0-6 Panthers. The Titans need to step it up.
