The French Open is upon us, and while the usual suspects dominate the headlines, the clay courts of Roland Garros can be a place for surprises! We delve into the 2024 French Open lines for WTA and ATP, highlighting three underdog contenders who could shake things up.
The French Open began qualifying earlier in the week. Qualifying finals take place on Thursday with the first round dropping first serve on Sunday, May 26. As we move closer towards this year’s French Open, it makes sense to consider the top underdog plays on both the men’s and women’s sides.
Check out tennis odds, analysis, and picks for the three top underdogs in both the ATP and the WTA to win this year’s French Open.

Top Underdog: Andrey Rublev
Rublev doesn’t go into the French Open playing his best. The top underdog pick to win at Roland-Garros fell in the third round of the Internazionale BNL d’Italia to Alexandre Muller, the world’s ninetieth player.
But although Rublev must pick up his game, he’s won 2 singles titles this year, including the Mutua Madrid Open where he beat both Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz. Give Rublev a big chance to upset the French Open favorites.

Second Best Underdog: Casper Ruud
At +1100, Ruud is a borderline favorite or mid choice. The 25 year old Norwegian beat Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell earlier in the year.
Ruud also beat Novak Djokovic on his way to the final of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters in April.
There are some things to like about the second choice.

ATP Second Best Underdog Pick: Casper Ruud

Third Best Underdog: Daniil Medvedev
Medvedev is 24-7 in singles matches this year but he has yet to win a title, which exp lains the excellent +2000 odds.
1If Daniil gets his best game going at Roland-Garros, he’s one of the top three players in the world.
So consider if you’re looking for a higher payout than what you get by backing Rublev or Ruud.

2024 French Open – WTA Women’s Singles Underdogs
Top Underdog: Danielle Collins
Collins has gone 32-9 and has won 2 singles titles this season, the Miami Open where she beat Elena Rybakina, and the Charleston Open.
Collins made it to the Internazionale BNL d’Italia Semifinals where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka.
For sure, the American has a massive shot at excellent odds to upset this year’s French Open WTA favorites.

Second Best Underdog: Qinwen Zheng
Zheng had a fantastic Australian Open. She made it all the way to the finals where Aryna Sabalenka beat her 3-6, 2-6.
Qinwen might be rounding into her best form.
At the Internazionale BNL d’Italia, Zheng lost to Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals after 2 sets and a tiebreaker.

Third Best Underdog: Mira Andreeva
Andreeva is just 12-7 in singles matches in 2024. But the 17 year old has shown signs she’s ready to break out on the world stage.
Andreeva made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrid Open, falling to Aryna Sabalenka.
At the Australian Open, Andreeva pushed Barbora Krejcikova to three sets in a fourth round loss.
Taking a swing on Andreeva makes sense if you believe a young star emerges.

Coco Gauff’s miracle run comes to a stop
Coco Gauff’s phenomenal run at the 2021 French Open came to a stop on Wednesday, June 9. After beating some of the best tennis players at the tournament, the 17-year-old proved no match for world no.33 Barbora Krejcikova.
The 25-year-old Czech won the match 7-6, 6-3 and secured her spot in the semi-finals, where she’ll face off against Maria Sakkari. The two will clash for the first time since March 2021, when Krejcikova won with 6-2, 7-6 in the 1/32-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championship.
Although a disappointing ending of her French Open journey, Gauff can be happy with her performances. She has reached her career-first Grand Slam tournament quarter-finals just four years into her professional career.
This marked Gauff’s only second trip to the French Open after her R2 exit in 2020. Last year, Gauff stunned ninth-seeded Johanna Konta (6-3, 6-3) in the first round but was unable to make it past Martina Trevisan (6-4, 2-6, 5-7) in the second round of the tournament.
Gauff’s other memorable Grand Slam finishes include R4 at the 2020 Australian Open and R3 at US Open in 2019. Earlier this year, the American made it to the second round of the Australian Open, where she lost against fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina (4-6, 3-6).
For Barbora Krejcikova, this win carried her to her first Grand Slam singles semi-final. Last year Krejcikova finished the 2020 French Open in R4 when she lost against Nadia Podoroska.
Krejcikova is now only two steps away from her first singles Grand Slam title. She already has a French Open doubles title from 2018, when she beat Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya (6-3, 6-3) alongside Katerina Siniakova.
Maria Sakkari Stuns Iga Swiatek
Maria Sakkari and Iga Swiatek went from practice partners to French Open quarter-finals rivals – a great storyline with a not-so-great ending for Swiatek, who lost to the Greek tennis star 4-6, 4-6.
After four failed attempts of making a deep run in France, Sakkari defied all the odds, beat the reigning French Open champion, and secured her first-ever Grand Slam semi-finals appearance.
Her previous trips to France all ended before R4, which includes exits from R1 (2017), R2 (2019), and R3 (2018, 2020). Her career-best placements in other Grand Slam tournaments include two R4 exits from US Open (2020) and the Australian Open (2020).
Sakkari will face off against Krejcikova in the semi-finals on Thursday, June 10. Both have enjoyed what could be described as miracle runs to make it that far.
Sakkari and Krejcikova eliminated some of the best players from the tournament and are now set to compete for their first Grand Slam titles. Sakkari will enter the match as the betting favorite, but with the form Krejcikova has been showing, this will be anything but a one-sided affair.
