The Tour Championship returns to East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, for the season finale of the 2022-23 PGA Tour season.

In 2019, the Tour Championship scoring format changed to allow the winner of the tournament to also capture the FedEx Cup title. The player entering the week with the most FedEx Cup points would start at 10-under par, second place at 8-under, in third at 7-under, fourth at 6-under, and fifth at 5-under. The final 26-30th ranked players would begin the round at even par. 

Rory McIlroy returns to East Lake as the defending champion, having won his third FedEx Cup title last season, joining Tiger Woods as the only player to have won three times. Rory fired a 21-under par, the third year in a row that tally was the winning number, defeating Scottie Scheffler and Sungjae Im by one shot.

East Lake Golf Club

East Lake is the oldest course in the Atlanta area, with an established date of 1904. The original course was designed by Tom Bendelow and redesigned by Donald Ross less than a decade later. 

A par-72 on the card will play as a par-70 this week for the Tour pros. The course measures 7,346 yards and features deep bunkers, perched greens, and penal rough if you miss the fairways.

Following the conclusion of this week’s tournament, the course will undergo substantial renovations to restore the layout back to its original design. 

Tour Championship Field

The field is packed with the top players in the world, all fighting for the championship and the $18 million dollar check that goes to the winner. In total, $75 million will be handed out to players as part of the FedEx Cup bonus pool for their finish in the season-long race.

World no. 1 Scottie Scheffler sits atop the standings and will enter the week with a two-shot advantage over Viktor Hovland. Hovland buoyed up the standings with his victory at the BMW Championship last week.

Rory McIlroy begins the tournament in third and three shots back of Scheffler as he tries to become the first golfer to have four FedEx Cup titles to his name. Masters champion Jon Rahm will start in the fourth slot after picking up four of his 11 career victories this year.

Sam Burns, Emiliano Grillo, Tyrrell Hatton, Jordan Spieth, and Sepp Straka were the final five players to punch their ticket to East Lake. Straka was the last man in, narrowly edging Sahith Theegala by nine points.

Tour Championship Betting Favorites

Scheffler (+136) enters the tournament as the betting favorite as he attempts to secure his first FedEx Cup championship. McIlroy (+350) and Hovland (+480) come in right behind Scheffler, hoping to take advantage of their starting position.

Rahm (+880) and Patrick Cantlay (+1825) round out the betting favorites. Cantlay was the FedEx Cup winner in 2021, while Rahm is still searching for his first title.

It has been another exciting year on the PGA Tour, but it will all come to a close at the East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta this weekend. There are just 30 players set to hit the course over the weekend, with no cut in place for this one. While winning the tournament is the goal of all 30 players, it is the FedEx Cup that is the ultimate prize, especially since the trophy comes with a $10 million bonus attached to it. Bryson DeChambeau is the front-runner after winning the opening two events, but anyone can catch him, although many of the 30 would need some help to make that happen. FedEx Cup aside, let’s take a look at the odds to win the 2018 TOUR Championship in Atlanta this weekend.

Justin Rose

2018 PGA Tour Championship Odds: +800

I actually believe that Rose is the man who is going to eventually take the FedEx Cup by winning this event. His playoff run did not get off to an ideal start, as he missed the cur in the opening event at the Northern Trust. Since then, though, he has finished 2nd in each of the last two tournaments and is now knocking on the door.

This has been a great season for Rose, with 2 wins, which matches his career best, as well as 10 top 10 finishes to his name. He is the favorite to win here for a very good reason.

Dustin Johnson

2018 PGA Tour Championship: +900

You cannot have a conversation about crowning the champion of gold without including the #1 player in the world. Johnson has once again been one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour in 2018, but he has not really translated that into wins.

The RBC Canadian Open was the last time that he ended an event on top of the leaderboard, with that win coming back in early July. He has landed in the top 10 in 2 of the 5 tournaments that he has played since then, but his inability to break through and win may hurt him here.

Rory McIlroy

2018 PGA Tour Championship: +750

McIlroy knows what it takes to come from behind and win the FedEx Cup, as that is exactly what he did a couple of years ago. The Irishman decided to sit out the Northern Trust, which served as the opening round of the playoffs, but he has been good in the two tournaments that followed.

He finished 12th in his first tournament back, and then followed that up with a top 5 finish at the BMW Championship. McIlroy has been a consistent top 10 finisher this season, but with just 1 win on the season, you have to feel that he is likely to have a similar top 10 fate here.

Justin Thomas

2018 PGA Tour Championship: +1100

The defending FedEx Cup Champion is in with a shot at retaining his crown if he can get the win on Sunday. Thomas would become only the second player, with Tiger Woods being the other, to have won the FedEx Cup twice if he can pull this off.

While it has been a solid year for Thomas with 3 wins on the tour, he has not been particularly great in the three playoff tournaments thus far. He has just one top 10 finish in those three tournaments, so I just don’t see him getting the repeat with a win.

Instead of having a large field of pros, the PGA Championship only features 30 players, as they all go after the FedEx Cup and the $10 million bonus that comes with winning it. As always, the PGA Tour will be heading south for this one, with the tournament once again being held at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, it’s time to pick out the golf betting picks for this one

Spieth has had an amazing season, and it’s no real surprise that he comes into this weekend as the clear favorite to win it all. He won the FedEx Cup back in 2015, and will be looking to get it back from Rory McIlroy, who won it last year. Spieth has 3 wins on the tour this year, including a major at the Open Championship. He also has a handful of second place finishes, and has only missed the cut twice all season long. This is a young man who always seems to be hanging around at the top of the leaderboard every event that he takes part in, and there is no reason to believe we won’t see more of the same this weekend. It’s a chalky pick, but I think Spieth wins and gets the FedEx Cup back into his possession.

There are some who will look at the world #1 as having a disappointing season, likely because he does not have a major to his name. This is actually not very fair, though, as he has 4 wins on the tour this season, which is a career best for Johnson. He also has 8 top 10 finishes this season, as well as over $8.5 million in earnings. For Johnson, this weekend is almost certainly not about the money, but more about maintaining his number 1 rank and finishing the season with a signature win. He is going to be there or thereabouts on Sunday afternoon.

Rickie Fowler (Golf Betting Odds at +600)

Rickie Fowler is one of those guys who never really gets the acclaim that he deserves, mostly because he is playing at a time when Spieth and Johnson are dominating the game and making all the headlines. Fowler has a single win on the tour this season, landing on top at the Honda Classic, but he has also come close on several different occasions. Fowler has 10 top 10 finishes this season, which landed him the 6th spot in the FedEx Cup standings. Yes, he does have a chance, but I think he is going to come up short this time around.

Jon Rahm (Golf Betting Odds at +750)

Rahm has been one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour this season, although that has not really translated to wins. The Spaniard’s lone win came at the Farmers Insurance Open, but he has also been in the top 10 on 10 different occasions. The fact that he has been so consistent and in the hunt at just about every event makes him a legitimate threat here, but I just don’t think he has what it takes to make the big breakthrough this season.

Justin Thomas (Golf Betting Odds at +800)

Thomas has been arguably the best player on the tour this season, coming into this one with 5 wins, including landing on top at the PGA Championship. Thomas is ending the season on fire, and I think he may well be that player that is ready to give Spieth a run for his money over the weekend. I was basically down to a coin flip between Spieth and Thomas, and I think taking Thomas to finish in the top 5 is a very solid bet.

Dustin Johnson

The current leader in the FedEx Cup standings is most likely the favorite to win the $10 million bonus. Dustin Johnson has finished in the top 5 at the event the last two times he has played in it, and you have to believe that a similar sort of finish this weekend would have him as the champion this time around. It would certainly be a deserving award, as Johnson is arguably the best player in the world at the moment. He is a solid bet to win this tournament and the FedEx Cup.

Patrick Reed

Being in second place in the FedEx Cup standings at the final stage of the playoffs is historically a good place to be. The last 3 winners were in the second spot coming into the final week of the season, but I think Reed is going to be the man to break that trend. Still worth a look, but I think the winner will come from elsewhere.

Rory McIlroy

If anyone is going to come from off the pace and win the big bonus, it may very well be the Irishman. Currently sitting in 6th place in the standings, Rory McIlroy has stated his desire to add his name to the list of golfers on this trophy, and he certainly has the game to pull it off. He doesn’t need much in the way of help to win the FedEx Cup, as all he needs with a win is for Jonson to finish tied o second or worse to become champion.

Jason Day

While Day may be sitting 4th in the standings and in prime position to win, I have him a little lower down the pecking order. Day has had a wonderful season, but back issues have put something of a question mark on his ability to get the job done here. It may well be that he can put the pain aside and summon up the intestinal fortitude to win, but I just don’t see it happening, especially with so many other great golfers going after the same prize.

It may be a safe pick, but I like Dustin Johnson to win this thing outright. It would be a fitting finale to what has been a truly wonderful season.
