The Americans took home the trophy in 2019 when they defeated the International Team 16-14 at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Tiger Woods was the captain of the team, with assistant captains Fred Couples, Zach Johnson, and Steve Stricker.

This time around, Davis Love III is the team captain, along with Couples, Johnson, Stricker, and Webb Simpson as assistants. Trevor Immelman will guide the International squad along with K.J. Choi, Geoff Ogilvy, Camilo Vegas, and Mark Weir as assistants.

The American team is composed of Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Sam Burns, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, Max Homa, Billy Horschel, Cameron Young, and Kevin Kisner.

On the International side, the eight-man team is led by Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae I’m, Joohyung Kim, Corey Conners, Adam Scott, Mito Pereira, K.H. Lee, and Sebastian Munoz.

Both American and International players that jumped to the LIV Golf Series were banned from competing in this year’s President’s Cup competition.

The format of the tournament follows the Ryder Cup in matchplay events. Whether they are solo are pair events, each outcome is worth one point, with the winning side needing 15.5 of the total 30 points to claim victory.

Day 1 consists of five best ball matches, with Day 2 consisting of five alternate shot competitions. On the third day, there will be four best ball and four alternate-shot matches, and the final day of competition features 12 single-match play events.

Odds to Win

The American team is the betting favorite heading into the action, with MyBookie.ag having the current odds at -649 for Team USA to take home the President’s Cup trophy. The International team can be grabbed at +510, and if you are feeling a draw, that has the best outcome odds at +1300.

The Americans have dominated the President’s Cup historically since its inception in 1994, winning all but two events. The International team took home the trophy at Royal Melbourne in 1998, and the two sides tied in 2003 at Fancourt Hotel and Country Club in George, Western Cape, South America.

Looking at the list of players, it is easy to see why the Americans are a heavy favorite. Pros like Scheffler, Cantlay, and Schauffele should easily dominate their matches, but on the flip side, Matsuyama, Im, and Scott are worthy targets for top three-point finishers.

Check out who will play on Team USA: Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Matt Kuchar, Xander Schauffele, Webb Simpson, Patrick Cantlay, Bryson DeChambeau, Tiger Woods, Gary Woodland, Tony Finau, Patrick Reed, and Rickie Fowler.

Thomas, Johnson, Cantlay, Woods, and Schauffele are in the Top 10 on the Golf World Rankings. That alone makes Team USA at least a -150 odds favorite, right? Woodland, Dechambeau Finau, Reed, and Fowler rank in the Top 25.

It means every golfer on Team USA is ranked in the Top 25. If we handicap based on Golf World Rankings, USA towers over the International squad. We shouldn’t do that. World Rankings are close to meaningless in a sport where winning a tournament jumps you into the Top 10 even if it’s the only tournament you’ve won in the past year.

Not only that but the President’s Cup is a match play tournament. The Americans play against the International players head-to-head. It’s like college football. Rankings give Oklahoma a shot against LSU. The Sooners are +13 dogs to beat LSU in the CFP, though.

Rankings don’t mean a whole lot in the President’s Cup. All rankings are skewed because the PGA plays more events, many more, in the U.S. than anywhere else in the world. That makes the odds on Team USA underlaid.

Are the Internationals worth backing at +240?

Maybe. Although the only players on the International squad ranked in the Top 20 are Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama, the International Team has a big advantage. This year’s President’s Cup takes place in Australia.

Scott is Australian. He should know The Royal Melbourne Golf Club better than any player on the course. Louis Oosthuizen finished second at the Australian Open over the course this year. Abraham Ancer from Mexico won the Australian Open last year. Cameron Davis won it in 2017.

The Internationals send the past 2 winners and this year’s follow-up winner of the Australian Open to the President’s Cup. Again, all you have to do is beat the guy you’re matched up against. That’s it.

The format gives the International Team a huge advantage because they know The Royal Melbourne Golf Course.

What are the draws true chances of happening?

It’s higher than +1200, that’s for sure. The Americans are up against it. U.S. players rarely venture out of their comfort zone, PGA Tour Events. Captain Ernie Els loaded up his team with golfers that excel over his year’s course.

The best play is on the International Team to upset Team USA. Back the draw if you believe the Americans can get past home course advantage. If not, go with the Internationals.

Betting the PGA Tour Presidents Cup Straight Up

Given the history of this tournament, the -400 odds for the US to win seems like a very good value. The United States team is 9-1-1 in the previous 11 President’s Cup events, with the last International team win coming way back in 1998. It has seven straight wins for the US, although they did get a bit of a scare in 2015 when they only managed to win by a single point.

I would suggest that this team is a good deal stronger than that last one, which is why I think they win the 2017 version a good deal more comfortably.

This is a tough bet indeed, but it’s one that pays out very well if you can get it right, so well worth a flutter. The US won 15 ½ to 14 ½ in 2015, but their 5 previous wins saw them land a score of between 18 ½ and 19 ½ points. That seems to be the most common total for the winner, and it’s in there that I would be looking at placing a wager. I’m taking the US to win 18 ½ to 11 ½ for a payout of +1500.

Yes, it’s a risky bet, but even if you make this your smaller wager among the bets, you can still turn a very nice profit on this tournament.

There are a lot of very good options to choose from in the US team, and when you consider the season that Jordan Spieth (+380) has put together, he would appear to be a very good bet. I am going with a different player, though, as I am all about going with the hot hand in golf. This leads me to Justin Thomas, the player who just won a cool $10 million as the FedEx Cup champion.

It’s not just that victory that makes me inclined to wager on Thomas, but rather the way he has been playing through the final few months of the season. At +580. Justin Thomas is excellent value.

In my humble opinion, I think things are a little clearer on the international team side of things, as there are probably 3 or 4 players who have a legitimate shot at being the top scorer on this team. Jason Day (+380) is the favorite, and Adam Scott (+500) seems like another good bet, but I am going with a player who falls in between those two in terms of odds.

My money is going to be on Hideki Matsuyama (+400). He has been consistently good on the tour all season long, and I think he will be the main threat to the US on the international team.
