The fifth annual Laver Cup gets underway on September 23 in London, United Kingdom, at the O2 Arena. Tennis’ answer to golf’s Presidents Cup pits the top players in Europe against the top players in the rest of the World. It’s named after legendary Australian player Rod Laver, who won 11 Grand Slams and 198 titles, including 72 during the Open Era. It’s time to take a look at our Tennis Betting preview for the approaching 2022 Laver Cup tournament.
Tennis Betting Opportunities and Analysis for the Upcoming 2022 Laver Cup Tournament
While one might expect Team World would have a decent shot in this event, take a minute to appreciate the talent on Team Europe. This year’s six-player team features Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, Andy Murray, and Roger Federer.
Federer, who hasn’t played since Wimbledon in 2021, is still scheduled to play as of September 13 but is coming off of three knee surgeries and is said to be battling through pain. He’s not a sure thing to participate, but there are plenty of suitable replacements, including US Open winner Carlos Alcaraz.
Team World, meanwhile, is without notable players like Nick Kyrgios and Denis Shapovalov. Its roster includes Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, Diego Schwartzman, Alex de Minaur, John Isner, and Jack Sock. John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg are the captains of Team World and Team Europe, respectively.
The Format
The actual schedule of matches won’t be posted until the day before the event, so keep an eye out for positive betting opportunities. Naturally, Team Europe will be the favorites in all but every match, with perhaps the exception of Auger-Aliassime, Fritz, and de Minaur’s matches.
Each of these players could have a shot to win against Murray, Ruud, and Tsitsipas, who has been struggling as of late and recently lost in the first round of the US Open.
The event involves five sessions played over three days. Players play at least one singles match in the first two days, and four of the six players participate in a doubles match.
Friday’s matches are for one point, while Saturday’s matches account for two points. Three points are on the line in Sunday’s matches.
There are 24 points available, so the team that reaches 13 points first wins the tournament. If by chance, the score is 12-12, a tiebreaker match is held on Sunday.
Past Results
Last year’s event was held in Boston, Massachusetts, and marked a massive victory for Team Europe. Only nine matches were needed as the Europeans won 14-1.
John Isner and Shapovalov scored the World’s only point in a doubles victory over Alex Zverev and Matteo Berrettini. Expect much of the same this year with similar lineups.
The 2019 event, however, was the closest matchup we’ve seen thus far. Team Europe won the event 13-11 with huge back-to-back singles victories to conclude the tournament.
Federer defeated Isner to keep Team Europe alive in Match 11, and Zverev defeated Auger-Aliassime in a third-set tiebreak to win Match 12.
Team Europe won 13-8 in 2018 (Chicago) and claimed the inaugural Laver Cup 15-9 (Prague). Federer defeated Kyrgios to win the tournament for Team Europe.
