Tennis Betting Preview for the 2021 Croatia Open Umag, 2021 Los Cabos(Mifel) Open, and 2021 Swiss Gstaad Open

2021 Croatia Open Umag

• When: 19-25 July
• Where: Tennis Center in Umag, Croatia

The 2021 Croatia Open Umag will feature a fairly competitive field of five top-60 ranked players on the ATP Rankings. World no.41 Albert Ramos Viñolas travels to Croatia as the top-seeded player, followed by Dušan Lajović (no.43) and Filip Krajinović (no.44) to round up the list of the top-50 rated players.

Three-time Grand Slam semi-finalist Richard Gasquet (no.54) enters the tournament as the fourth-seeded player ahead of world no.56 Aljaž Bedene, who travels to Croatia following an R3 exit at the 2021 Wimbledon. Jaume Munar, Carlos Alcaraz, and Gianluca Mager round up the list of the top-10 seeded players at the tournament.

Krajinović, Bedene, and Lajović have all competed here in 2019. Krajinović managed a second-round exit after a narrow loss against the eventual finalist Attila Balazs, while Lajović eliminated Bedene in the quarter-finals en route to winning the event.

Lajović won the 2019 ATP Croatia Open Umag, beating the Hungarian with 7-5, 7-5. Although many will look at Lajović to repeat his success, the Serbian tennis star has since dropped in form and hasn’t achieved much in 2021.

His best showing of the year happened in Australia, where he made it to R4. In the year, Lajović is averaging a 38% win rate across 29 matches, so perhaps fading him to repeat his success would be the best call here.

2021 Mifel Open

• When: 19-25 July
• Where: Los Cabos, Mexico

The 2021 Mifel Open (also known as 2021 Los Cabos Open) returns after a one-year hiatus with an entirely different field than that which competed here in 2019. Diego Schwartzman, who won the 2019 Mifel Open, will not be taking part in Mexico; however, we will see a return of 2019 finalist Taylor Fritz.

Fritz enters the tournament as the third-seed, behind John Isner and Cameron Norrie. Joining the three as top-10 seeded players are world no.68 Sam Querrey, no.71 Jordan Thompson, no.83 Steve Johnson, no.87 Andreas Seppi, and no.103 Mackenzie McDonald.

The field looks very top-heavy, with Norrie, Isner, and Fritz all ranked much higher than their main competition. It wouldn’t be too optimistic to say at least one of the three will feature in the finals on Sunday, July 25.

Which of the three that might be is anyone’s guess, but the draw makes it easier to guess how the 2021 Mifel Open will play out. And it looks far more promising for Isner.

Unless we’re in for a shock, Norrie and Fritz will meet in the semi-finals of the tournament, whereas Isner will enjoy a much easier road to the finals with Querrey as his most formidable opponent en route to the title.

Norrie and Fritz met six times in their career, splitting the bouts three apiece. Norrie won two of the last three meetings but lost their most recent outing at ATP Masters 1000 Miami. If that result is any indication, the Fritz vs. Isner final is likely on the cards.

2021 Swiss Open Gstaad

• When: 19-25 July
• Where: Roy Emerson Arena in Gstaad, Switzerland

Out of the three ATP 250 events slated for July 19-25, the 2021 Swiss Open Gstaad is one you shouldn’t miss. Although all three feature strong fields, it’s the Swiss tennis tournament that takes the cake as the most stacked event.

The 2021 Swiss Open Gstaad will feature four of the top-20 rated players, including Denis Shapovalov (no.10), Roberto Bautista Agut (no.14), Casper Ruud (no.16), and Cristian Garín (no.18). Joining the four heavyweights are Federico Delbonis (no.48), Benoît Paire (no.51), Laslo Đere (no.57), and Feliciano López (no.90).

Albert Ramos Viñolas, who won this tournament in 2019, will instead be competing in Croatia, whereas the other finalist, Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, was unable to attend the event after suffering a leg injury in Newport earlier this month.

The top-rated players at the tournament won’t have to wait long to meet one another. Shapovalov could meet with Ruud in the top half semi-finals, whereas Garin and Bautista Agut are expected to clash in the bottom half semi-finals.

Shapovalov looks like the man to beat given their current form, but his success in Switzerland is anything but guaranteed, knowing that he has yet to defeat Ruud in his career. Likewise, Garin has yet to defeat R Bautista Agut, who beat him 7-6, 6-3 in May in R32 of the Italian Open.

Created in 2016, the Los Cabos Open, known as the Abierto de Tenis Mifel for sponsorship reasons, is an ATP 250 event played on hard courts. It’s played simultaneously to the ATP 500 Citi Open, but has nonetheless attracted a comparable if not better field.

The tournament is played at the recently-opened Cabo Sports Complex and is among the most prominent tennis events in Latin America. Players this year are competing for ranking points as well as more than $800,000 in prize money.

Briton Cameron Norrie won the 2021 tournament, defeating Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 6-2, in the final. The Los Cabos Open wasn’t held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior winners include Diego Schwartzman (2019), Fabio Fognini (2018), Sam Querrey (2017), and Ivo Karlovic (2016). Medvedev Preparing to Defend US Open Title

Daniil Medvedev is the top-ranked player in the world, but hasn’t really had the opportunity to prove it this summer. He was banned from playing at Wimbledon as the All England Club didn’t allow Russian players.

Medvedev lost in the quarter-finals at the Mallorca Open this past week in his return to action following more than a month off. He’s 27-10 this season, but has yet to win a tournament.

The talented Russian won the 2021 US Open in dominant fashion with a three-set finals victory over Novak Djokovic and should head into this year’s Grand Slam as one of the betting favorites. He’s a great hard court player and will be looking to get some momentum before playing in New York later this month.

A Rejuvenated Auger-Aliassime

Like Medvedev, Auger-Aliassime has barely played since Wimbledon. The Canadian was one of the top young players in the sport last year and even in 2020 (he’s still only 21 years old), but hasn’t been able to realize his potential.

Auger-Aliassime lost in four sets to American Maxime Cressey in the first round of Wimbledon, despite being one of the betting favorites to win after an impressive showing at the French Open. Consistency hasn’t been his strong point, however.

He’s only played once since then, losing in the first round of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championship to Jason Kubler in Rhode Island. Felix has particularly struggled with tiebreak matches, losing six of his last eight dating back to the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships.

The time off should benefit Auger-Aliassime, who has won his only two ATP Tour titles on hard courts, both of which came early this season at the ATP and Rotterdam. He reached the semi-finals of last year’s US Open before losing to Medvedev and should return to form for this year’s tournament.

Auger-Aliassime was visibly distraught after his first round loss at Wimbledon, but vowed to come back in top form for this hard court season. He spent the last week in Bahamas with his girlfriend, so here’s hoping a little R&R is what the Canadian needed.
