AL East rivals will meet up on Friday night to start a three-game weekend series as the Boston Red Sox host the Tampa Bay Rays. There is plenty of history between these two teams, but they appear to be heading in opposite directions.
Tampa Bay is coming into this series with the best record in baseball, as they stand at 40-18. The Rays did just drop two of three games in Chicago against the Cubs, but they staged a big rally to win the series finale.
Boston has to finish up a series with the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, and they enter that game at 28-27. The Red Sox will be trying to avoid a four-game losing streak as they have been trending in the wrong direction.
Don’t be surprised if the Rays are betting favorites in at least two of the three games, even though they are on the road.

MLB Philadelphia and New York: Friday, June 2 – Sunday, June 4, 2023
Rays Ridiculous on Offense
The offensive numbers for the Tampa Bay Rays have been tremendous this season, as this team has scored the second-most runs in baseball. Tampa Bay has belted 103 home runs, and they are able to put runs on the board in a hurry.
Yandy Diaz has been the best offensive player for the Rays, as he leads the team with 12 home runs and a .310 batting average. Fenway Park is known to be great for hitters, and this should be a chance for Tampa Bay to do some damage.
The Rays won’t have two of their best pitchers on the mound in this series, but they are still capable of getting outs. Tampa Bay wants to win games with the offense, but this staff is good enough to shut any team down.
Red Sox Need More Pitching
The Boston Red Sox come into this series with a team ERA of 4.70, and that’s just not good enough to get it done on a consistent basis. Boston will need to find a way to keep the ball in the park in this series, but that’s easier said than done.
Rafael Devers is having a huge season for the Red Sox as he leads the team with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs. Devers has some protection in the lineup as well, and Boston will try to keep pace with the Rays at the plate.
Boston still has a chance to get back into the playoff race in the AL East, but it’s all going to come down to how well this team is able to pitch.
Rays Just Too Powerful for Red Sox
Tampa Bay has been doing nearly everything well this season, but the offense has cooled off a bit of late. The Rays started to hit for some power in the series finale in Chicago, and that should serve them well at Fenway Park.
Boston just hasn’t been getting the pitching that is needed to win games, and that staff is facing a tough matchup in this series.
Boston will have a big advantage of facing the Rays away from Tampa, but the Red Sox will only be able to get one win in this series.
