Finally, after 20 years of postseason darkness, the Mariners broke the streak. In 2022 not only did they make the playoffs, they actually won a series, beating the Blue Jays in the Wild Card.

Seattle Mariners: 2023 Season Prediction
The last time the Mariners were a playoff team they played into October in four of seven seasons. So the key question for 2023: Can they also turn this collection of players into postseason regulars?
Odds to Win American League West
Player | Odds |
---|---|
Houston Astros | -175 |
Seattle Mariners | +320 |
Los Angeles Angels | +750 |
Texas Rangers | +850 |
Oakland Athletics | +25000 |
The Astros are still the class of the American League West, and they are the heavy favorite to win the division for the sixth time in seven years. But the Mariners are right behind them, and are a legitimate threat to Houston’s division supremacy.
A big part of that is the top of the Astros rotation that features Luis Castillo and Robbie Ray. Castillo was traded to Seattle in the middle of last season, and proved to be a difference-maker. In two postseason starts he had an ERA of 1.88 in 14.1 innings, with 12 strikeouts to just one walk. Castillo is paying +1600 to win the American League Cy Young Award this season.
Ray is just two years removed from winning the Cy Young with the Blue Jays, the same season he led the Majors in ERA and strikeouts. Ray was good last year, but not great. But considering what his ceiling can be, the one-two punch of Castillo and Ray could be the best in the A.L.
Will the Mariners Make the Playoffs?
The oddsmakers have made the answer to this question clear. Yes. At -170, the Mariners, fresh off a 20-year playoff drought, are heavy favorites to make it to the postseason in a second straight season. Seattle is also tied for the fourth shortest odds when it comes to winning the American League, at +900. Only the Astros, Yankees, and Blue Jays are bigger favorites.
Last season the Mariners were +155 to make the playoffs and +1400 to win the American League pennant.
American League MVP Odds
Player | Odds |
---|---|
Shohei Ohtani | +200 |
Aaron Judge | +400 |
Mike Trout | +600 |
Julio Rodriguez | +800 |
Last year the Mariners were top-10 in ERA, but in the bottom half of baseball in on-base percentage, slugging, and runs scored. In order for Seattle to actually push the Astros in the West, they need a much better offense. That begins with star Julio Rodriguez, who is paying +800 to follow up his Rookie of the Year award with an American League MVP.
Rodriguez struggled in the postseason last year, but he was a huge reason why Seattle was in the postseason. And if he can turn just a few of his 145 strikeouts into home runs (he had 28 in 2022) he could be in the MVP hunt.
Seattle also looks to get a power boost with the offseason addition of Teoscar Hernandez. He’s a two-time Silver Slugger winner and has 57 home runs over the last two seasons.
