How are Both Team in the NBA Season So Far
The Celtics probably finish as the East’s No. 2 team in the regular season so they would only faced the Sixers in the first round if Philly gets to the play-in tournament and then gets through it as the right seed to face the No. 2 team in the East instead of the likely No. 1 seed in Cleveland. To make the full East playoffs, the Sixers are +265 underdogs with no at -350.
Thursday marks the third of four regular-season meetings between the rivals and they have split. The last was Feb. 2 also in Philly and Boston won 118-110. The Celtics recorded their third-largest comeback win in the play-by-play era as they overcame a 26-point deficit.
It also tied the LA Clippers for the largest comeback win in the NBA this season. Jayson Tatum became the first Celtic and seventh NBA player since 1996-97 to register at least 25 points, five rebounds, and eight assists in a second half. He finished the night with 35 points, a season-high 11 assists and seven rebounds. Boston hit eight 3-pointers and outscored Philly 38-16 in the fourth quarter while going on a 54-20 run to secure the win. Tyrese Maxey led the Sixers with 34 points and six assists.
Boston leads the all-time series 271-198 in the regular season and has won two straight in Philadelphia.
^Sixers Just Can’t Get Rolling
Philadelphia is one of the NBA’s most disappointing teams at 20-34 and enters on a five-game skid. Superstar and former MVP Joel Embiid has been limited to just 17 games, while big-ticket free-agent Paul George has been limited to 35 games and hasn’t been very good when on the court.
One piece of great news this season has been the Sixers striking gold in the international market again after signing big man Guerschon Yabusele last summer following his five-year stint in Asia and Europe. Yabusele has been so good that the Sixers probably can’t afford to re-sign him in free agency this summer. The long-term story of this season has been Tyrese Maxey’s growth into the alpha male. He’s averaging team-bests in points (27.6) and assists (6.1).
From Jan. 6-Feb. 9 Tyrese Maxey scored at least 25 points in a career-best 18 consecutive games which stands the third-longest streak in the NBA this season. Only Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s two such streaks of 21 and 19 games are ahead of Maxey. Since the start of the 2025 calendar year, Maxey has scored an Eastern Conference-leading 648 points.
Philly’s pre-deadline trades of Caleb Martin, KJ Martin, and Reggie Jackson were all essentially salary dumps aimed at saving money and creating financial flexibility, but the team appears to have gotten a quality role player back in at least one of those deals in Quentin Grimes from Dallas in the Martin trade.
Grimes has averaged 32.8 minutes per night in his first four outings as a Sixer and putting up 16.8 points per. He entered the starting lineup last Wednesday in Brooklyn in the club’s last game before the All-Star break and blew up with a season-high 30 points on 10-of-18 shooting, with nine rebounds, four assists, and a pair of steals.

Celtics Starting To Click
Boston has looked rather bored this season after winning the NBA title in June but might be rounding into form as it enters the break having won three straight and seven of eight. All-Star starter Jayson Tatum was spectacular in his final game before the break with 32 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists in a win over the Spurs. He’s now scored at least 32 points in three straight games and four of his last six games.
Celtics reserve guard Payton Pritchard has evolved into a one of the league’s top shooters and the Sixth Man of the Year betting favorite. Pritchard brought in multiple professional or NCAA players to push him in workouts four or five days a week over the summer. He also worked to improve his jump-shooting off the bounce, and to up his conditioning.
Pritchard leads all NBA reserves in points (747), three-pointers (170), and plus/minus (+352). He ranks 2nd overall in assists (190) and rebounds among guards (220). He has scored 25+ points five times this year (2nd among NBA reserves), while his seven such career games rank fifth by a Celtics reserve all-time (Isaiah Thomas, Don Nelson). Pritchard has made at least 6 three-pointers in seven games this season, which is tied for the sixth-most games in the NBA.
“It’s just putting myself in different situations,” Pritchard said. “It’s not necessarily doing a certain drill, it’s certain situations where they’re guarding me, what’s the right shot to get to here? If they play it a certain way, if I’m on this side of the court and they guard me at this angle, then I should get to this shot, these shots. Just having an arsenal for those different things.”
^Celtics at 76ers NBA Expert Prediction
The Celtics have won by 20+ points in an NBA-leading 14 games this season. The team’s all-time single season record is 22 such wins during the 2007-08 season. Tatum is one of only five NBA players averaging at least 25.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists this season (Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Dončić, Nikola Jokić, Anthony Davis).
Tatum ranks 4th in the NBA in points scored (1,406), while Jaylen Brown ranks 9th in transition points (271) and Derrick White ranks 2nd among league guards in contested shots (347). Tatum (185) and White (170) have a combined 355 treys this season, the highest by a pair of teammates in the league. It appears that Boston will have everyone available for this game.
Philly could be short-handed in the backcourt with veterans Eric Gordon and Kyle Lowry both expected out. Lowry, the club’s backup point guard, didn’t practice Tuesday with a hip injury. Gordon, who starts sometimes, missed the team’s final two games before the break with a wrist injury and was to see a specialist Wednesday so he’s not likely. Rookie forward Justin Edwards (8.2 PPG, 3.2 RPG) sprained his ankle during practice Tuesday so he’s in doubt as well. The Philly Big 3 should play.
