The top two teams in the American League start a series on Monday as the New York Yankees carry a nine-game winning streak into Toronto. The Jays won’t be home underdogs often this season but are Monday on the MLB odds.

Why Bet on New York?
The Yankees won their ninth straight game Sunday, 6-4 in Kansas City. Aaron Judge homered twice to run his long-ball streak to three straight games and added the tying RBI in the seventh inning. Judge has hit five home runs in his last five games and eight this season. Judge returned from a scheduled day off to connect off Daniel Lynch for a drive estimated at 453 feet to center in the first inning. He added another shot in the ninth.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Joey Gallo is day-to-day with left groin tightness. Gallo left Saturday’s contest against the Royals with left groin tightness. The struggling Gallo had two hits Saturday, a line-drive single to right in the second that set up the Yankees’ first run and an infield hit he beat out in the fourth that led to their third run. Gallo is 6-for-20 with a double, two homers, a pair of walks — and, yes, 11 strikeouts — in his last seven games.
New York’s winning streak is the team’s longest since a 13-game streak from 8/14-27/21. It’s also the longest winning streak in the majors this season. The Yankees have had 16 of their 22 games this season decided by three runs or fewer. Closer Aroldis Chapman has converted 20 straight save opportunities (since 7/20/21), his longest streak since his 22-save streak from 5/8-7/31/18.
It’s lefty Jordan Montgomery (0-1, 2.70) on the mound Monday. Montgomery allowed two runs across 5 2/3 innings last Wednesday as the Yankees beat the Orioles 5-2. Montgomery was nearly untouchable through the first five innings, facing just two over the minimum. Things got a bit dicey in the sixth, though, when Anthony Santander clubbed a two-out, two-run home run. Montgomery hit the next batter with a pitch and his night was over.
Last year, Montgomery received three-or-fewer runs of support in 25 of his 30 starts, and two runs or fewer in 17 starts. Five times, Montgomery was given one run to work with. Seven times in 2021, the Yankees gave him nothing. The tough luck has extended into his first four starts this season, with the Yankees averaging him exactly two runs of support per outing.
Why Bet on Toronto?
The Jays won their second game in a row Sunday, 3-2 over Houston. Santiago Espinal drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the seventh inning and Bo Bichette added a two-run homer. Tim Mayza worked the eighth and Jordan Romano pitched around Kyle Tucker’s one-out double in the ninth to earn his 11th save in 12 chances. Romano got some help from right fielder George Springer, who made a sensational catch on pinch-hitter Alex Bregman’s liner for the second out. Toronto is 9-2 in one-run games. The Blue Jays lead the major leagues in one-run victories. It was Bichette’s third round-tripper of the season and lone hit in four at-bats. The 24-year-old has gotten off to a bit of a slow start at the plate, hitting .214/.238/.327 with 10 runs scored, three homers, 10 RBI and three steals across 101 plate appearances. All three of his home runs this season have either tied the game or given the Blue Jays the lead. The Blue Jays now boast six players with at least 10 RBI this season, the most in the majors (Vladimir Guerrero Jr. – 16, George Springer – 12, Matt Chapman – 12, Espinal – 11, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. – 10 and Bichette – 10).
Romano has converted 11 of 12 save opportunities this season and holds a 1.46 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 14/2 K/BB ratio across 12 1/3 innings.
The Jays are 6-0-1 in series play. The seven undefeated series to start the year ties a franchise record set in 1992.
DH Teoscar Hernandez (oblique) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Class-A Dunedin on Tuesday. He should only need a couple of games to get his timing back before hopefully rejoining the Blue Jays for their weekend series against the Guardians in Guardians.
It’s right-hander Ross Stripling (0-0, 3.60) on the mound here. Stripling pitched five innings of one-run ball and struck out seven Wednesday against the Red Sox in a no-decision. Stripling faced the Yankees twice last season, going 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA (5 ER/10.0 IP). Over five career meetings (2 starts) with the Yankees, he has a 0-4 record and a 4.50 ERA (10 ER/20.0 IP).
